If you’re not a huge football fan (or just not a crazy person that loves to watch prospects run 40-yard dashes and lift weights), you probably didn’t watch the 2018 NFL combine. The NFL Combine is an annual event where those that are entering that year’s draft demonstrate their skills to sell themselves to teams as to why they should be selected. Players run a 40-yard dash, bench press and show off the individual skills they’ve developed over the years.

The big story coming out of the weekend was Saquon Barkley, the Penn State running back, who put on an impressive display of athleticism that will surely get him drafted high, possibly first overall. However, Barkley wasn’t the only star to come out the combine.

The University of Central Florida linebacker Shaquem Griffin came to the NFL combine knowing that he had an uphill battle ahead of him in his quest to show scouts why he deserved to be drafted by their team. Not because of his lack of skills or anything like that, but rather for the fact that Griffin only has one hand.

Despite putting together an impressive college career, including being named the 2016 American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Griffin knew that his disability would cause teams to hesitate to select him.

Griffin was born with a rare condition called amniotic band syndrome, which stunted development in his left hand and also caused him a great deal of pain. Finally, when he was four, his hand was amputated, and he’s been one-handed ever since.

At the combine, Griffin blew prospects away with what he was able to do. Using a prosthetic grip, he was able to bench press 225 pounds 20 times. Not only that, but he ran a 4.38 40-yard dash, the fastest linebacker in 15 years to do so at the combine.

In case you already weren’t impressed enough, Griffin had this to say following his bench press exhibition:

“So many people are going to have doubts about what I can do, and obviously, it started at the bench press…some people think I can do three, some people think I can do five, some people didn’t think I could do the bench press. But I did it and competed with everybody else and did 20, and that’s just one step closer to everything I need to accomplish. There’s going to be a lot more doubters saying what I can’t do, and I’m ready to prove them wrong.”

A speech at Michigan State University coming from speaker Richard Spencer instigated violent protests outside the school, including anti-fascist activists, students and community members, causing police to block access to the venue. Eventually, the scene caused police to block the venue.

What happened?

Multiple people were detained by police shortly before Spencer was scheduled to start his speech around 4:30 PM. Some of the members of the crowd were seen punching and pushing each other, with at least one of Spencer’s supporters being tackled by police as he ran through the crowd.

Some of the protesters were seen wearing masks or covering their faces with scarves; some of the chants made included “no KKK” and “(expletive) Nazi” interjections. Others showcased colorful protest signs.

Before the speech was given, various security concerns were made, including screening attendees and giving out tickets from a secure location. Of these measures, Spencer gave the following statement in a video posted on Twitter:

“In an ideal world we wouldn’t have to do this, you could show up five minutes ahead of time, but we’re dealing with serious security concerns.”

What are people saying?

According to The Detroit News, organizer Pete Johnson defended Spencer with the following statement:

“They don’t want free speech; they want to create a genocidal movement. What they’re trying to do today is organize, and what we’re doing is trying to make sure they don’t have a place to organize. If they don’t have a place to organize, they can’t build their movement.”

“We fully oppose the violence of the Nazis in addition to the structural violence of racism broadly, which pervades our society.”

Katie Kuhn, one of the protesters, gave the following statement:

“I’m very concerned by the amount of hate and fear that’s happening, that’s being spread by the government and white supremacist groups. It’s our duty to stand up for justice and peace, to come together.”

Jacob Osojnak, a graduate who joined the protest, also gave the following statement:

“I just wanted to let everyone know that hate has no place at Michigan State,” he said. “I’m a proud alum of the university and wanted to show support by demonstrating for what I think is right.”

Who is Richard B. Spencer?

Richard B. Spencer is considered an American white supremacist, although he rejects the label, instead, thinking of himself as a member of the identitarian movement. The Southern Poverty Law Center gave the following statement about Spencer:

“Richard Spencer’s clean-cut appearance conceals a radical white separatist whose goal is the establishment of a white ethno-state in North America. His writings and speeches portray this as a reasonable defense of Caucasians and Eurocentric culture. In Spencer’s myopic worldview, white people have been ‘dispossessed’ by a combination of rising minority birth rates, immigration, and government policies he abhors.”

“Fighting that alleged dispossession is the focus of the, until recently, tax-exempt organization he heads, the National Policy Institute (NPI). According to NPI’s mission statement, it aims “to elevate the consciousness of whites, ensure our biological and cultural continuity, and protect our civil rights. The institute … will study the consequences of the ongoing influx that non-Western populations pose to our national identity.” NPI lost its tax-deductible status with the IRS for failing to file returns with the Internal Revenue Service after 2012.”

An ideological third positionist, he has been critical of capitalism, the pro-life movement, and Christianity, also opposing same-sex marriage and believing women should not be allowed to make foreign policy.

The school initially refused to rent space to Spencer for the speech, citing public safety concerns, eventually reaching a court settlement in January after being sued for access.

The college basketball Cinderella story is the annual gift that keeps on giving, a yearly opportunity to see an underdog story make a potential run at history, even if it does ruin everyone’s brackets and assures that the one weirdo who had no idea what they were doing ends up winning the office tournament pool. It’s the stuff that legends are made of, as just one good tournament can prove career-altering and legacy-defining. Names like Jim Valvano, Steph Curry and Brad Stevens remind us of where so many unexpectedly great careers began. But which Cinderella teams were the craziest of all time?

NC State 1983 – No. 6 – Champion

The NC State men’s basketball team played in a different kind of college tournament in 1983. There was no 64-team-bracket, no three-point-line, no clock stoppages and no shot clock. Still, coach Jim Valvano and the “Cardiac Pack” became wildly popular as they made their run towards a national title. With 10-losses on the season, NC State had to win the ACC’s automatic-bid just to make the tournament, defeating defending champions North Carolina and #2 ranked Virginia in order to do so. Once in the tournament, Jimmy V and the Pack went to work, defeating Pepperdine in double-overtime before once again defeating Virginia. Following a semi-final victory against Georgia, NC State was set to play college powerhouse Houston in what would be one of the greatest NCAA title games ever. While Houston was favored heavily, they dealt with a series of issues early on, as stars Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon were limited by foul trouble and elevation-fatigue respectively. The two teams exchanged runs throughout the second half, with Houston going up by seven before an NC State run to tie the game at 52. And then, of course, came one of the all-time great basketball sequences: a tie game, a chaotic series of near-turnovers by NC State with Houston’s Drexler and Anders each unable to complete a takeaway, NC State’s Derek Whittenburg taking a thirty-five foot miracle three with five seconds left and Whittenburg’s air-ball turning into a Lorenzo Charles alley-oop as time expires to win the title. Yeah, “Cardiac Pack” is right.

Villanova 1985 – No. 8 – Champion

1985 marked the first year in which a 64-team tournament was played, and yet Villanova remains to this day the lowest seed to ever win an NCAA championship. The 1985 tournament was by no means a fluke for Villanova, as they played only one team ranked lower than they were — No. 9 Dayton — and ironically only defeated them in the first-round by a whole two points. And then it got hard. After beating No. 1 seed Michigan by a whopping four points, the Wildcats had to defeat both Maryland and North Carolina to make the Final Four, where they won against No. 2 seed Memphis. Finally, they were set to play No.1 seed Georgetown, the defending champions who led by an absolute force in Patrick Ewing. As one might expect, the championship game was superb. Led by Dwayne McClain’s 17 points, Villanova set the record for field goal percentage in a championship game, hitting over 78% of their shots as they won 66-64 for their first ever title.

VCU 2011 — N0. 11 – Final Four

VCU was an 11-seed that began in the First Four, in the first such year that the opportunity to play for an automatic bid was offered. Basically, there was no precedent for VCU to do what it did in March of 2011. At age 33, coach Shaka Smart was thrust into the spotlight of a college basketball world that watched his team defeat USC, Georgetown, Purdue, and Kansas, among others, a foundation that has kept the program and coach Smart relevant to this day. Their Cinderella story would go on to end in the Final Four though, as they were met with another phenomenal young coach and a slightly more seasoned team of underdogs in Butler.

Butler 2011 — No. 8 – Title game

Like VCU, Butler’s 2011 tournament run was an inspired fit of basketball led by a wunderkind coach and a squad of players who had no choice but to play the kind of team basketball that has defined coach Brad Stevens’ career in college and the NBA. The difference between Butler and VCU? The Bulldogs had been there before. As improbable as Butler’s run to the 2011 title game was, that improbability was fueled by the fact that Butler was somehow in the national title game for the second year in a row. So what makes 2011 more special than 2010? Frankly, it’s closer than you’d think. While the 2010 team came only two points of shy of beating No. 1 seed Duke for the national title, that Butler team began as a 5-seed, as opposed to a mere No. 8 seed. Without Gordon Heyward, who was off to the NBA following the 2010 season, the 2011 Butler team was forced to advance through the tournament behind some seriously strange and dramatic moments: a last-second tip in by Matt Howard to beat Old Dominion, a last-second free throw by Matt Howard to beat No. 1 seed Pitt, an overtime win against Florida to advance to the Final Four, and we already know about their Final Four showdown with VCU: a classic 8-seed vs. 11-seed matchup. It was all so much stranger and somehow more compelling than 2010, even if it did end with a far rougher championship defeat at the hands of UConn.

Loyola Marymount 1990 — No. 11 – Elite Eight

While Loyola Marymount’s 1990 tournament run didn’t produce a title, there’s no doubt this offensive juggernaut provided one of the most inspiring seasons of basketball ever played. Led by Paul Westhead and “The System,” Loyola Marymount set a Division I record by averaging 122.4 points per game in 1990, though the lasting memories of the team and that season go far deeper than just their unparalleled offensive accomplishments. In the West Coast Conference semifinals, star forward and projected NBA lottery pick Hank Gathers collapsed on the court, the result of a previously misdiagnosed heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; he would die at a nearby hospital that same night at only 23 years old. Loyola Marymount would go on to win the conference semifinals game and advance into the tournament, where their high-octane offense now found itself fueled by a desire to honor their friend and teammate. Bo Kimble, LMU’s remaining star and a longtime friend of Gathers, honored his fallen friend by shooting left-handed free throws to begin each game. Loyola Marymount would go on to thrash defending champions Michigan by over 30 points in the second round, before eventually exiting with an Elite Eight loss to future champions UNLV.

American Dad is back with a brand spanking new episode involving clowns and mural restoration. A Brown University student newspaper published an op-ed article which calls for a ‘men’s revolution’ in order to “liberate not only men, but all of society, from the constraint’s of toxic masculinity.” This op-ed can be found in The Boston Daily Herald, a student-ran newspaper for the Brown University community. The author also cites the recent Parkland school shooting as a reason why we need a revolution against toxic masculinity.

'Toxic Masculinity' To Blame For Florida School Shooting, According To Rutgers Student Newspaper Op-Ed

The author of the article Quentin Thomas is also a coordinator for Brown’s recently-launched “Masculinity Peer Education” program, which hires male students to host workshops and dive deep down into the issues surrounding masculinity.

Student writer Quentin Thomas argues the necessity of a revolution against toxic masculinity, convinced that it’s a nefarious web of male-specific social norms that causes men to “perpetrate harm against another individual and himself.”

“Upon hearing the phrase ‘toxic masculinity,’ one might first think about how it impacts other people. What can often be overlooked, though, is that men suffer greatly from toxic masculinity, too,” Thomas writes. “Thanks to toxic masculinity, men are encouraged to constantly meet a range of unrealistic expectations: to exaggerate dominant traits, embody stoicism through extreme emotional suppression and never show any signs of weakness.”

In his op-ed, Thomas also reflects on the Parkland shooting where 17 students were shot dead, and directly cites that incident as an example why “it is now the time to recognize the crisis of masculinity afflicting our country.”

Thomas writes, “In light of the Parkland shooting and broader conversations about assault and equality, it is now the time to recognize the crisis of masculinity afflicting our country and the need for a comprehensive redefinition of manhood: a men’s revolution.”

Thomas currently volunteers as a student coordinator for Brown’s Masculinity Peer Education Program, formerly known as Masculinity 101. This recently-formed program is a resource for students looking to discuss issues relating to masculinity. The goal is to promote a ‘healthier’ social environment by “unpacking male privilege,” while “acknowledging harm and promoting healing” and helping men “avoid abusing that [male] privilege.”

College Men's Center Is Now Focused On 'Reconstructing Masculinity' Through Social Justice

According to a Brown University spokesperson, eight male students have been employed as Peer Educators to host workshops, such as “Cultivating Empathy” and “Harm and Healing.”

There is also a workshop called “Privilege 101” which teaches students “a tangible definition of privilege and specific examples of male privilege,” and then asks them to “reflect on the role privilege plays in their life” and “work towards developing strategies for engaging with their privilege.”

The curriculum for Masculinity 101 is created “for students, by students,” but is under the guidance of Marc Peters, the school’s Health Promotion Specialist whose main responsibility is promoting “healthy masculinity.”

The program is also open to women and non-binary students, as the goal’s mission is “not…well-served by being exclusionary.”

Peer coordinator and opinion writer Quentin Thomas predicts that addressing and dismantling the harmful elements of toxic masculinity will be very beneficial to society.

Thomas ends his article, writing that “In the age of the #MeToo movement and Women’s Marches, it’s time for men to have a parallel revolution—one that will liberate not only men, but all of society, from the constraints of toxic masculinity.”

Russ Solomon, an American entrepreneur and art collector whose biggest claim to fame was being the founder of the worldwide music store empire, Tower Records, has passed away at the age of 92. With his official date of death falling on March 4, 2018, he death had been confirmed by his son, Michael Solomon.

What happened?

Russ passed away at his home in Sacramento, California, while watching the 90th Academy Awards. According to Yahoo, his son, Michael, gave the following description of his final moments in the following statement:

“Ironically, he was giving his opinion of what someone was wearing that he thought was ugly, then asked (his wife) Patti to to refill his whisky.”

Growing up during the Great Depression, Russ developed his first music store by converting his father’s Tower Cut Rate Drug Store. Eventually creating the Sacramento-based Tower Records, the company went bankrupt in 2006. Despite the setback, he continued working, with plans to create a new store. Later in life, Russ was the subject of the 2015 documentary All Things Must Pass, which detailed his life.

Upon the news of his passing, San Franciso Weekly published the following passage in his honor:

“Tower Records has been gone for more than a decade, but virtually everyone over 25 remembers browsing through CD racks in the mall. Having been founded in Sacramento in 1960, Tower expanded to San Francisco eight years later, opening up in a former grocery store in North Beach after nursing a hangover at a nearby diner. At its peak, it was the original megastore, with international locations — including one in the Castro, in a spot that later housed now-defunct locations of CVS and Radio Shack. “

There are currently no plans to hold a funeral or memorial. Instead, Michael confirmed that the family will host a large, private party for friends.

According to the San Franciso Chronicle, Russ Solomon’s official cause of death was a heart attack, as confirmed by his son.

Before we begin, I would just like to kindly remind everyone that Isaiah Thomas is the same dude who thinks he’s worth a maximum contract and tried to alpha LeBron in Cleveland.

Everyone remember that as they watch the following video.

Down three to Portland with 7.4 seconds to play, Thomas was put on the line by his team to hit a technical foul shot to cut the Trail Blazers leaded to a manageable two points. However, his foul shot, just like his stature, came up short.

But even with the missed foul shot, the Lakers were still within three points of the Blazers while maintaining possession of the ball. So what do they do? They draw up a game-tying shot for Thomas, but not only did IT miss the shot, he didn’t even got the shot off, as Shabazz Napier was able to easily strip the 5′ 8″ point guard.

As I’ve said a couple times this season, I don’t think I’ve seen a player have such a drastic fall from grace. Last season, IT was a legit MVP candidate on the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference. Now? Now he’s coming off the bench for a lottery team, backing up Lavar Ball’s kid with the broken jump shot.

Yikes.

Isaiah Thomas Net Worth 2018: How Much Is Isaiah Worth?

Prince George’s County Police say that Crossland High School in Temple Hills, Maryland has been placed on lockdown after a threat was posted on social media.

At this time, extra officers are in the area and police are working to find the person who posted the threat.

Prince George’s County Police Department posted to Twitter to say that they were aware of the threat, saying:

“We are aware of the newly-posted social media threat regarding Crossland HS in Temple Hills. We are actively working to find the person who posted the threat. The school will be placed on lockdown & extra officers in the area out of an abundance of caution.”

At this time, authorities have not disclosed the nature of the threat that was made and have not released any other information at this time.

Crossland High School is a public secondary school located in Temple Hills, Maryland, United States. The school serves about 2,000 students in grades 9 to 12 in the Prince George’s County Public Schools system.

Crossland High School released the following statement on the threat:

“Crossland High School has been placed on lockdown as a precaution due to a threat made on social media.

We are working closely with the Prince George’s County Police Department and County Homeland Security to identify those responsible for the threat.

Providing students with a safe and orderly environment is our top priority and all threats are investigated and taken seriously. Additional local law enforcement officers were deployed to the school out of an abundance of caution.

We will continue to keep you informed.”

The school is located at 6901 Temple Hill Road in Temple Hills, Maryland.

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry, the now-former mayor of Nashville, pleaded guilty in Davidson County court on Tuesday, March 6, to felony theft charges. As part of her plea agreement, Barry was forced to resign from the office of mayor and pleaded guilty to felony theft of property over $10,000 charges. Furthermore, Barry will receive three years unsupervised probation.

According to reports, Barry has been under investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Metro Council after she admitted to the public on January 31 that she had an extramarital affair with her former head of security, Sgt. Robert Forrest.

In addition to her resignation and probation, Barry also must pay $11,000 in restitution. If Barry follows her plea agreement for next three years, the charges can be dismissed and expunged.

In Court, District Attorney General Glenn Funk said that had the case gone to trial, witnesses would have testified that between March 2016 and February 2018 Megan Barry caused over $10,000 and no less than $60,000 of Metro Nashville city funds to be expended unlawfully.

Metro Nashville Police records show Forrest’s overtime more than doubled in the budget year after Barry was elected in September 2015. Barry said the affair began in spring 2016, an affidavit said. Barry has not said when the affair ended, only that it’s over. Forrest, who had spent more than 31 years with Metro Nashville Police and supervised the mayor’s security detail over three administrations, has retired.

“I have lots of work to do in this city and every day I get up and I do it,” she said. “I’ve been very forthcoming with everything. I think the citizens of Davidson County continue to want us to get up every day and work. I have a great team, we have great Metro employees that get up every day to make sure this city runs, and I’m going to continue to lead that.”

Barry, born September 22, 1963, is an American businesswoman and politician who served as the 7th mayor of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, becoming the first woman to hold the post. She was sworn into office on September 25, 2015, and resigned March 6, 2018.

She performed the first same-sex wedding in Nashville on June 26, 2015.

Early Tuesday morning, Osceola County School of the Arts in Kissimmee, Florida, went on lockdown after a “suspicious person,” who was later determined to be a maintenance worker, was supposedly spotted on campus, with SWAT and police K-9 teams arriving on scene at the school. On social media, many of the students shared videos of their first-hand account of the incident on social media.

What happened?

The school was placed on lockdown during the investigation, in which it has been determined that the “suspicious person” that instigated the incident was really a maintenance worker for the school. According to the Orlando Sentinel, sheriff’s Major Jacob Ruiz released the following statement concerning the incident:

“The investigation revealed the suspicious person was actually an employee and there was never an unauthorized person on campus. There were no direct threats received to the school or anyone within the campus.”

Dana Schafer, a spokeswoman for the school district, confirmed that the person was an employee with the district’s Maintenance Department; she added in the following statement:

“At no time were students and staff in danger.”

What could be seen in the video?

In addition to videos released on social media, a 45-minute Periscope video has also been released online. As can be heard, the PA system announces at one point that it’s all clear, telling students to continue their day as normal.

On social media, many students gave their first-hand account of what had happened:

Ray High School in Texas was placed on lockdown after reports of a man with a gun on campus. Corpus Christi police confirmed officers were at the school and are currently investigating the incident.

According to the Caller Times, Leanne Libby, a spokesperson for the office of communications, said there was a reported concern about a possible threat, but there is no confirmation of a gun. The Caller also reports that the threat came the same day the school hosted Texas legislators to discuss gun violence in the wake of a school shooting in Florida last month.

The lockdown as issued around 12 p.m. local time.

A threat at Ray High School has prompted a lockdown at the school’s campus. CCISD Police Chief Kirby Warnke say the precautionary lockdown was put in place due to an unsubstantiated threat at the school.

According to Warnke, a student made a report of a possible threat, and CCISD PD is investigating. Ray High School Principal Cissy Reynolds-Perez says the school takes all reports seriously.

W. B. Ray High School is a secondary school centrally located in Corpus Christi, Texas and is part of the Corpus Christi Independent School District. The school is named in honor of CCISD school board president, William Benton Ray. W. B. Ray High School opened in 1950. It might be electric, but according to Jaguar it has a 400 horsepower engine and will also have a range of 220 miles, which is impressive for an electric vehicle. Jaguar also says that the battery should be able to go from zero percent to over 80% in about 45 minutes. For all the speed demons out there, the I-Pace can go from zero to sixty in just four seconds. You heard that right, it might be electric, but it can satisfy any speed lover’s desires.

The Sigma Pi fraternity chapter at University of Central Florida has been suspended after a stunt performed by pledges caused a building to be evacuated.  The evacuation lasted longer than an hour.

According to UCF, two Sigma Pi fraternity pledges entered a classroom in the Business Administration 1 building about 10:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, February 28.  One of the pledges wearing a Miami Heat Lebron James jersey tossed white powder in the air. The police report states that the student stood up in class and shouted, “I’m taking my talents to South Beach!”

Reports indicate that the prank carried out by the pledges was a tradition of the Sigma Pi fraternity that had been completed by other “brothers” in the past. It was also uncovered that members of the Sigma Pi leadership had coached the pledges into being deceitful in their interviews with law enforcement officers.

The white substance was later revealed to be baby powder.

According to the report, the powder landed on several students in the classroom. The second pledge was recording the powder toss with his phone, investigators said. Both young men fled the classroom.

“None of the students or the professor knew these individuals or what was happening,” the report said.

The building — a major classroom building at UCF, which houses the university’s accounting and finance departments, among other programs — was evacuated as police and hazmat crews investigated. Testing determined the powder wasn’t dangerous.

According to the university’s police department, the names of the two UCF students involved were redacted due to FERPA.
