The Pi Kappa Alpha chapter at the University of Louisiana Monroe has been suspended due to a “new member” incident.
ULM announced on Monday, March 12, that the Eta Omicron Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha has been temporarily suspended after a reported “new member incident.”

According to reports, the incident allegedly took place at a fraternity new member event which was held at an off-campus location.

These reports come amidst similar allegations that have been made against fraternities nationwide, including Sigma Alpha Epsilon at East Carolina University, who were shut down for hazing and the Lamda Chi Alpha chapter at the University of Arkansas which has been accused of taking sexually explicit photographs of women without their permission.

via The News-Star:

ULM Vice President for Student Affairs Camille Currier said, “The Pike Chapter has cooperated fully with the investigation, which is ongoing. According to Pike social media pages, there are 106 members and two houses on campus.

The students living at the houses may remain until the end of the semester, but will need to find new housing over the semester break, according to Currier. A hearing on the matter is pending.

In response to incidents like these, fraternities such Phi Kappa Psi have made numerous changes to their code of conduct in an effort to address the issues that have arisen. In addition, schools such as Texas State have introduced new Greek Life rules to try and prevent these problems.

Acclaimed physicist Stephen Hawking has died at the age of 76. Believed to have died in the early morning of Wednesday at his home in Cambridge, England, his death was confirmed by a family spokesperson. His official date of death was March 14, 2018.

What happened?

According to ABC 15, at the age of 21, doctors only gave Hawking several years to live due to his early onset Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which limited him physically and confined him to a wheelchair, as it made him unable to move his limbs or speak, requiring him to use a synthesized voice. In addition to his scientific work, he had been an advocate for those with disabilities; United States President Barack Obama granted Hawking the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

Probably one of the most famous scientists in the modern world, Hawking was a theoretical physicist whose work on black holes helped change the ways scientists think about the nature of the universe. In addition, his book, A Brief History of Time, first published in 1988, sold at least 10 million copies in 40 languages for a record 237 weeks.

Hawking’s life was the subject of the 2014 biographical film, The Theory of Everything, in which he was played by Eddie Redmayne, winning him an Academy Award; Hawking allowed his copyrighted synthesizer voice to be used for the film. In popular culture, he was also known for appearances made on episodes of The Simpsons, Futurama, The Big Bang Theory and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

According to Bloomberg, Hawking’s children Lucy, Robert and Tim released the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humor inspired people across the world. He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him forever.”

Fellow scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson wrote on Twitter:

“His passing has left an intellectual vacuum in his wake. But it’s not empty. Think of it as a kind of vacuum energy permeating the fabric of spacetime that defies measure.”

What was Stephen Hawking’s official cause of death?

At this time, it is unclear what was Stephen Hawking’s official cause of death. According to ABC News, his family did not disclose his cause of death in a statement but claimed he “died peacefully.”

As this story is developing, more information will be updated as made available.

World-renowned physicist Dr. Stephen Hawking passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 76. He is perhaps best known to the scientific world for his theory surrounding black holes, predicting that this dark phenomena in space emits radiation, which would later be known as “Hawking radiation.” His book A Brief History of Time, first published in 1988, went on to become a huge success, selling at least 10 million copies in 40 different languages.

Hawking’s appeal has also crossed over to mainstream popular culture, appearing on four episodes of The Simpsons, multiple episodes of The Big Bang Theory, and two episodes of Futurama. When Hawking was 21-years-old, he was told by his doctor that he only had a few years to live due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This disease gradually paralyzed Hawking over the decades, causing him to be conditioned to a wheelchair and relying upon a speech-generating device for vocal communication to the outside world. Despite the odds stacked against him, Hawking continued his scientific ventures, becoming a iconic figure in his profession.

Let’s take a look at some of Stephen Hawking’s best quotes and most famous sayings.

Dr. Stephen William Hawking was a world-famous theoretical physicist, best known for his theory surrounding black holes. His life inspired the 2014 film The Theory of Everything, which grossed $123.7 million and won an Academy Award for Best Actor. Sadly, Hawking passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 76.

At age 21, Hawking received traumatic news from his doctor, informing him of a life-threatening and debilitating illness, predicting that this ambitious scientist wouldn’t have long to live. Gradually through the years, Hawking’s illness worsened to an extent of paralysis. His disease is known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). For the rest of his life, this world-renowned physicist became conditioned to sitting in a wheelchair and speaking from a speech-generating device.

But he’s accomplished more in a wheelchair than many have on their feet. And he’s made more money in one tax year than many of us earn in a lifetime. But how much money does Dr. Hawking have in the bank? Let’s take a look and see, shall we?

Stephen Hawking Net Worth as of 2018: $20 Million

Dr. Stephen Hawking’s net worth rolls in at a sweet $20 million. Besides his role as a theoretical physicist and cosmologist, Hawking is also a best-selling author, publishing numerous commercially and critically successful books. His book A Brief History of Time, first published in 1988, went on to become a huge success, selling at least 10 million copies and spending more than four years on the Sunday Times bestsellers list. Hawking also held the positions of Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology (CTC) at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge. His salary is estimated to be about $3 million, according to CelebrityLifeCycle.

Let’s take a look at Hawking’s greatest accomplishments and awards earned throughout his prestigious life in science…

Stephen Hawking: A Life of Science, Awards, and Recognitions

Instagram Photo

Stephen William Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, in Oxford, England. At age 17, he enrolled at the University College, Oxford, where he studied physics. He reportedly found his work to be “ridiculously easy,” and by the third years of his studies he earned a first class honours degree in Natural Science, according to CTC.

While a graduate student in 1966, Hawking won his first award. He was given the Adams Prize for his essay, “Singularities and the Geometry of Space-Time”. Hawking received numerous other awards and honours throughout his life, including the Albert Einstein Award (1978), and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2009) which is the highest civilian award in the United States. In 2012, Hawking won the Fundamental Physics Prize, along with the winning prize money of $3 million.

In 1974, Hawking came up with the theoretical argument called Hawking Radiation. This ground-breaking prediction defied the previously-purported idea that nothing can escape from black holes. Hawking, using his knowledge of quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity, came up with a theory which suggested that there was a particle that would defy gravity and radiate from black holes.

Hawking has also crossed over to popular culture, appearing in four episodes of The Simpsons, multiple episodes of The Big Bang Theory, and two episodes of Futurama.

How Does Hawking View His Own Enormous Wealth?

Instagram Photo

In July 2016, Hawking wrote an op-ed article for The Guardian, saying that he doesn’t have much use for material possessions. However, he found his wealth to be both practical and important for his lifestyle, considering his medical expenses and work. On the other hand, he wouldn’t know what to do with lavish possessions such as Ferraris or racehorses.

Hawking said, “So I have come to see money as a facilitator, as a means to an end – whether it is for ideas, or health, or security – but never as an end in itself.”

National School Walkout Day: Must-See Photos & Videos

Throughout the United States, especially starting on the East Coast, waves of students marched outside of class on Wednesday morning both out of respect for the victims of the Parkside shooting and to demand stricter gun laws in the United States; starting at 10 A.M. ET, and continuing throughout the country as local times reach 10 A.M. respectively, students would stand out for 17 minutes, in honor of the 17 victims of the school shooting in Florida. The date of March 14 was chosen in honor of the fact that it would be exactly one month after the Parkside shooting.

What happened?

According to CNN, the organizers and students involved in the walkout have three main goals they are demanding from Congress; the ban of assault weapons, requiring universal background checks before gun sales and passing a gun violence restraining order law allowing courts to disarm people who have violent tendencies.

With each group of students and protesters, people showcased their own individual influences throughout their walkouts; according to CNN, in New Jersey, for example, students chanted “I am a bullet-free zone,” holding signs that reportedly read, “Chalk not Glocks!”

How people are getting involved?

At 10 A.M., at various local times, various television networks pulled programming for 17 minutes to showcase solidarity with the event; according to Fortune, this included Viacom’s networks, meaning that MTV, BET, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central took part in suspending on-air content for the event. In addition, MTV allowed students to control their social media accounts for the walkout. In addition, Viacom’s brands are also planning similar promotions for the upcoming March For Our Lives event planned for March 24.

According to CNN, there were also walkouts outside the United States; in one example, students and teachers at the International School of Tanganyika in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, participated in a walkout showing solidarity with the American students. Courtney Park, a teacher and librarian at the school, issued the following statement:

“We are lucky to live in a country that is relatively (civilian) gun-free, so it’s not something our students have to think about, but they are aware of the school shootings in the USA, and some understand the greater contexts of the NRA and its influence in politics.”

As this story is developing, more information will be updated as it is released.

A third student has been identified but is not part of Friday’s charges, Kreis said. Police believe there could be other victims and Kreis encourages parents and students to contact the police department or a school official.

“The investigation is still ongoing and fluid, and when it involves juvenile victims we deal with things in the most sensitive ways possible,” Kreis said. “If people have hesitancy to contact the police department, we encourage them to go to a teacher or counselor or some other third party. They should talk to someone.”

Beard appeared in court on Saturday, March 10, and was kept to the Lake County jail on a $1 million bond.

Over the course of just a few months, educators across the country were arrested for entering into an inappropriate relationship with their students, Tennessee teacher Janet Smothers, LaToya Parker, Florida teacher Caroline Lawson, 26-year-old Allyson Moran and Katherine Ross Ridenhour were all arrested on similar charges.

The list goes on to include 22-year-old Oklahoma science teacher Hunter Day, 28-year-old teacher Megan Kotarski, 23-year-old history teacher Michelle Schiffer, 29-year-old Alyssia Marie Reddy, special education teacher Jordan Ondish and 28-year-old Samantha Fitzpatrick have all been allegedly carrying on inappropriate relationships with their students.

In addition, 31-year-old Nicole Marie Andrews, 32-year-old Jessica Langford, 29-year-old Andrea Baber, 27-year-old Robin Dunlap, 27-year-old Jennifer Olajire-Aro have also been charged with these charges.

42-year-old Heather Butts of California was arrested on a second-degree felony charge, Nancy Leigh Ann Brann, a former Christian school teacher, was arrested for having sex with a student, Coine Audiat pleaded no contest to having sex with a minor in 2016 and 23-year-old Darci Lake was arrested for an inappropriate relationship.

Vegas knows best. For all those that have been staring at the same matchups in their bracket and not sure where to lean, let Vegas be the tie breaker. Their prognosticating, fortune telling deal with the devil is always astonishingly accurate.

Year in and year out it seems like the linemakers know more about the NCAA Tournament than the Selection Committee. So if you’re debating whether or not to take your chances on an upset, it’s never a bad idea to check the lines. Some notably close lines between teams with distant ranks are No. 11 Loyola and No. 6 Miami, who is only a 2 point favorite; No. 12 New Mexico State and No. 5 Clemson, only a 5 point favorite; And also No. 10 Butler and No. 7 Arkansas, where the higher ranked Arkansas is actually getting 1.5 points.

Obviously, the smaller the spread, the greater the chance for an upset. Check out all the updated spreads for the First Round below, via OddsShark.

When making your final selection for one of your many brackets, it can be immensely difficult to come to a consensus as there are a plethora of analysts that have varying opinions on the ultimate outcome of each matchup. Honestly, regardless of how well versed you feel when it comes to understanding the ins and outs of college basketball, nothing can prepare you for the sheer madness that is about to come. With that being said, it can be helpful to have insight into some of the programs that are fairly obscure as knowing just enough about these underdogs can be the difference between winning and losing in your respective tournament pool. Regardless of who you decide to trust or what unconventional methods you decide to utilize to feel comfortable with your final selections, it is essential to enjoy this exciting tournament for what it is: an unpredictable mess that is worth viewing and enjoying even if your bracket becomes busted within the first weekend.

Oklahoma Sooners (10) vs. Rhode Island Rams (7)

As we have seen this season, the Sooners success is completely predicated on how well Trae Young is able to play. With an abominably bad defense, the Sooners will need to score early and often to move on to the next round. However, the Rams possess a resilient defense that is adept at snatching the basketball away from their opponent. Relying on just their streaky offense for success, the Sooners chances against a much more well-balanced Rhode Island program seems like nothing more than a pipe dream.

Final Score: Sooners 74 Rams 78 Spread: Rhode Island -2.0

Wright State Raiders (14) vs. Tennessee Volunteers (3)

Although you may not know much about the Raiders, they are actually an exceptional defensive program (65.7 PAPG) that is reliant on their opportunistic ball snatchers to garner extra opportunities that they desperately need to score points (seven SPG). Similar to the Raiders, the Volunteers are also adept defensively but are far better at hitting their perimeter shots, which is the catalyst for their scoring success more often than not. Without a potent offense of any kind, the Raiders will struggle mightily to keep up with a Volunteers program that has several strong rebounders and shooters.

Final Score: Raiders 68 Volunteers 78 Spread: Tennessee -12.5

UNC Greensboro Spartans (13) vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs (4)

One of the most efficient defenses in college basketball (62.4 PAPG), the Spartans are relentless when it comes to forcing their opponents to take ill-advised shots. However, they have not faced a team with the athletes and dynamic capabilities that the Bulldogs possess. Ultimately, it will be the Bulldogs exceptional rebounding ways (39.9 RPG), that will render the Spartans elite defense irrelevant in this contest.

Final Score: Spartans 67 Bulldogs 83 Spread: Gonzaga -12.5

Pennsylvania Quakers (16) vs. Kansas Jayhawks (1)

Traditionally, Ivy League programs have had some success in the NCAA Tournament, if only in the earlier rounds. Efficient on both offense and defense, the Quakers are capable of making this particular contest interesting in the first half because of their multi-dimensional ways. However, against the high-powered offense of the Jayhawks (81.5 PPG), the Quakers will ultimately succumb to a team that is far more talented than they are.

Final Score: Quakers 70 Jayhawks 101 Spread: Kansas -13.5

Iona Gaels (15) vs. Duke Blue Devils (2)

Incredibly bad on defense, the Gaels rely on their capable perimeter shooters and strong free throw shooting abilities to keep them competitive. Although they move the ball fairly well (16 APG), they will have a difficult time doing so against a Blue Devil defense that has been far better recently. Combine that with Duke’s size and deadly sharpshooters and the Gaels will need to play out of their minds to even stand a chance of pulling off the upset here.

Final Score: Gaels 65 Blue Devils 85 Spread: Duke -19.5

Loyola-Chicago Ramblers (11) vs. Miami Hurricanes (6)

One of the most overlooked programs in college basketball, the Ramblers are far better than their points per game number would indicate (72.4 PPG). Shooting 50.7% from the field, the Ramblers are incredibly efficient at finding their shots and making them consistently. Although the Hurricanes have a capable defense, their shooting issues, particularly from the free throw line (66.3 FT%) will prevent them from overcoming a program that is incredibly consistent in more ways than one.

Final Score: Ramblers 77 Hurricanes 70 Spread: Miami -2.0

South Dakota State Jackrabbits (12) vs. Ohio State Buckeyes (5)

When the Jackrabbits are able to score (84.9 PPG) and rebound the basketball effectively (39 RPG), they are capable of frustrating any opponent that they face. However, their porous defense and below average ball-movement skills (74.1 PAPG, 13.5 APG) has been something that has done them in on a few occasions. Against a Buckeyes team that is adept at playing defense (66.7 PAPG), the Jackrabbits elite offense will falter when they need it the most.

Final Score: Jackrabbits 71 Buckeyes 74 Spread: Ohio State -8.0

NC State Wolfpack (9) vs. Seton Hall Pirates (8)

Despite their anemic defense (74.5 PAPG), the Wolfpack were able to stay afloat in the ACC because of their gifted offense (81.2 PPG). While the Pirates have the sizeable athletes to garner more rebounds than the Wolfpack, their inability to score and play defense consistently will be to their detriment against a team with an established identity.

Final Score: Wolfpack 80 Pirates 75 Spread: Seton Hall -2.5

Radford Highlanders (16) vs. Villanova Wildcats (1)

While you have to give credit to the Highlanders for not only making the tournament but for making it out of the First Four, their heartwarming story of success will most likely come to an end against a Wildcats team that is incredibly proficient at shooting the basketball from anywhere on the court (50.4 FG%, 39.8 3P%).

Final Score: Highlanders 68 Wildcats 90 Spread: Villanova -23.5

Davidson Wildcats (12) vs. Kentucky Wildcats (5)

Although they do not have an electric, high scoring offense (77 PPG), Davidson does possess underrated athletes that are exceptional at passing (17.1 APG) and shooting the basketball, especially from the free throw line (48.6 FG%, 79.4 FT%, 39.3 3P%). While Kentucky may have the better athletes that can rebound the ball consistently (38.8 RPG), their accuracy when shooting from the field pales in comparison to Davidson (46.9 FG%, 69.3 FT%, 35.8 3P%), which will be their undoing in this contest.

Final Score: Davidson 79 Kentucky 75 Spread: Kentucky -5.0

San Diego State Aztecs (11) vs. Houston Cougars (6)

What they lack in elevated offensive statistics, the Aztecs make up for by being fantastic at rebounding the basketball (38 RPG). However, the Cougars are equally as proficient at rebounding the basketball and are formidable offensively thanks to the dynamic contributions of Rob Gray. Despite being incredibly disciplined, the Aztecs one-dimensional yet effective nature will not be enough for them to overcome an opponent that possesses more athletes.

Final Score: Aztecs 66 Cougars 73 Spread: Houston -4.0

Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (14) vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders (3)

While their overall seeding may suggest that is barely a tournament team, the Lumberjacks are actually one of the more versatile programs in college basketball. Possessing a decent defense (68.1 PAPG) and a consistently accurate offense (48.8 FG%), the Lumberjacks are adept at making the most out of the opportunities that their defense gives them (10 SPG). While the Red Raiders defense has been exceptional all season long (64.7 PAPG), their anemic offense and poor rebounding skills will prevent them from keeping up with the Lumberjacks tenacious offense.

Final Score: Lumberjacks 77 Red Raiders 72 Spread: Texas Tech -11.5

Alabama Crimson Tide (9) vs. Virginia Tech Hokies (8)

When guard Collin Sexton is effective, the Crimson Tide can beat almost anyone at anytime. Although it can be ill-advised to rely on the natural talents of one player, the Crimson Tide was able to rely on Sexton consistently when they beat the elite offense of Auburn in the SEC tournament. While the Hokies have a better offense overall, their refusal to garner rebounds will hurt them against a Crimson Tide team that is fearless when it comes to driving forcefully to the rim.

Final Score: Crimson Tide 80 Hokies 78 Spread: Virginia Tech -2.0

Buffalo Bulls (13) vs Arizona Wildcats (4)

Dominant on offense in nearly every way, the Bulls possess strong shooters (47.4 FG%) and physical rebounders (39 RPG) that can keep providing their talented offense with extra opportunities. However, the Wildcats are not only better at shooting from the field (50.5 FG%), but they also have one of the best athletes in the country in Deandre Ayton, a monster of a human being that will bully Buffalo from start to finish in this contest.

Final Score: Bulls 80 Wildcats 88 Spread: Arizona -8.5

Montana Grizzlies (14) vs. Michigan Wolverines (3)

Unlike so many programs in college basketball this season, the Grizzlies clearly take a tremendous amount of pride in being well-balanced and competitive on both offense and defense (78.1 PPG, 68.7 PAPG). Yet, even with their dynamic abilities, the Grizzlies will struggle mightily against a Wolverines team that is deadly when shooting from the perimeter while being stingy on the defensive end of the court.

Final Score: Grizzlies 65 Wolverines 76 Spread: Michigan -11.5

St. Bonaventure Bonnies (11) vs. Florida Gators (6)

Although the Bonnies may not be particularly strong defensively (70.6 PAPG), they are able to make up for this weakness by being disciplined when it comes to ball security and deadly when it comes to shooting from the perimeter (39.3 3P%). While the Gators have looked great defensively recently, their inconsistent offense will be to their detriment against a team that rarely make mistakes on the court.

Final Score: Bonnies 73 Gators 68 Spread: Florida -5.5

Providence Friars (10) vs. Texas A&M Aggies (7)

Say what you will about the Friars wavering competitiveness during the regular season, but this is a team that turned it on at the right time during the Big East tournament where their defense stifled St. Johns, Creighton and Xavier. Although the Aggies have the massive athletes that can force themselves to the basket to garner rebounds, their lack of a serious scoring presence will hurt them noticeably against the scrappy and fearless Friars.

Final Score: Friars 78 Aggies 71 Spread: Texas A&M -3.5

CS Fullerton Titans (15) vs. Purdue Boilermakers (2)

While the Titans have flashed moments of being a solid defensive team, they have at times been particularly dreadful as they relinquished 100+ points in two games this season. Against a Boilermakers team that is exceptional on both offense and defense, the Titans barely have a chance to pull off the upset against a far superior opponent.

Final Score: Titans 63 Boilermakers 86 Spread: Purdue -21.0

Marshall Thundering Herd (13) vs. Wichita State Shockers (4)

Efficient at both passing and shooting the basketball (84.3 PPG, 17.2 APG), the Thundering Herd are at their best when they can get to the basket in transition. While the Shockers offense is equally elite at makings plays, their lack of size will prevent them from staving off a relentless Marshall program that never backs down when it comes to pursuing the basket.

Final Score: Thundering Herd 83 Shockers 81 Spread: Wichita State -12.0

Georgia State Panthers (15) vs. Cincinnati Bearcats (2)

When their defense is clicking effectively (67.5 PAPG), the Panthers are a difficult team to overcome as they are cerebral in covering their opponents consistently. Unfortunately, the Bearcats are far better at playing both defense and rebounding, which will be deciding factors in allowing Cincinnati to move on to the next round.

Final Score: Panthers 62 Bearcats 81 Spread: Cincinnati -14.0

Lipscomb Bisons (15) vs. North Carolina Tar Heels (2)

If you can look past their odd name, you will find an offensively adept program in the Bisons that can both shoot and rebound the basketball at a high level. However, against a Tar Heels program that is one of the best in the college basketball at rebounding and scoring the basketball, the Bisons will most likely be on the wrong side of the scoreboard throughout this affair.

Final Score: Bisons 70 Tar Heels 95 Spread: North Carolina -19.5

Butler Bulldogs (10) vs. Arkansas Razorbacks (7)

When the shots are sinking for the opportunistic Bulldogs, they are decidedly difficult to beat. The problem is, the Bulldogs have been wildly inconsistent offensively, which has prevented them from reaching their competitive potential. Although the Razorbacks are dreadful defensively, they are highly skilled at hitting perimeter shots (40.1 3P%), which will serve them well against the lackadaisical defense of the Bulldogs.

Final Score: Bulldogs 82 Razorbacks 89 Spread: Butler -1.5

Murray State Racers (12) vs. West Virginia Mountaineers (5)

Disciplined defensively (65.5 PAPG) and highly efficient offensively (48.5 FG%), the Racers are methodical yet unafraid to shoot the basketball when they have an open look. While the Mountaineers defense as a whole has struggled this season, their full court press in conjunction with their strong athletes should allow them to win what should be a back and forth contest.

Final Score: Racers 74 Mountaineers 75 Spread: West Virginia -10.0

Texas Longhorns (10) vs. Nevada Wolf Pack (7)

One of the head-scratching programs that were inducted into the tournament this year, the Longhorns only competitive contributions is their capable albeit wavering defense. Even though the Wolf Pack’s defense could leave them open to being upset, their exceptional abilities when it comes to shooting the basketball should allow them to persevere down the stretch of this affair.

Final Score: Longhorns 78 Wolf Pack 85 Spread: Nevada -1.0

Kansas State Wildcats (9) vs. Creighton Blue Jays (8)

As strong and resilient as the defense of the Wildcats is, their inability to rebound the basketball has to be a concern against a Blue Jays program that rarely fails to make their shots on a consistent basis. Even if the Wildcats can get multiple stops and force some turnovers, it may not be enough to hold off what is a dynamic scoring team.

Final Score: Wildcats 69 Blue Jays 79 Spread: Creighton -1.5

Bucknell Bison (14) vs. Michigan State Spartans (3)

If the Bison’s prolific offense is able to get going against a Spartans program that has struggled to shoot the basketball recently, they could very well pull off a massive upset over a highly talented opponent. While it is possible that Michigan State’s dynamic athletes struggle early on, it’s hard to imagine the versatile Spartans going home early again in the NCAA Tournament.

Final Score: Bison 72 Spartans 78 Spread: -14.5

Texas Southern Tigers (16)/North Carolina Central Eagles (16) vs. Xavier Musketeers (1)

Regardless of which program ultimately makes it to the first round, they will have to contend with one of the most prolific offenses in college basketball. While the Musketeers defense could pose a problem for them later on in the tournament, it is highly unlikely that either the Tigers or the Eagles will be able to exploit this weakness.

Final Score: Tigers/Eagles: 63 Musketeers 89 Spread:

Charleston Cougars (13) vs. Auburn Tigers (4)

While their defense is capable of doing some damage from time to time, the Cougars are rarely able to take advantage of this advantage as they struggle mightily to move the ball effectively on offense. Against the high-scoring and incredibly physical Tigers, the Cougars will struggle to get anything going against what is an insanely intimidating opponent.

Final Score: Cougars 73 Tigers 86 Spread: Auburn -10.0

UMBC Retrievers (16) vs. Virginia Cavaliers (1)

If the Bulldogs can find a way to take the ball away from the disciplined Cavaliers, they may have a chance at keeping this contest relatively close. However, the Cavaliers top-ranked defense is simply too potent and tenacious in minimizing the chances of their opponent to make something happen on offense.

Final Score: Retrievers 55 Cavaliers 77 Spread: Virginia -22.5

Arizona State Sun Devils (11)/Syracuse Orange (11) vs. TCU Horned Frogs (6)

Whether it’s the high-volume shooting offense of the Sun Devils or the tough defense of the Orange, either one will struggle mightily to contend with a Horned Frogs offense that is extremely accurate when shooting from the field (49.9 FG%). While the Horned Frogs defense could leave them open to being upset, their scorers are too prolific to be shut down regardless of who they face in the first round.

Final Score: Sun Devils 77 Orange 65 Horned Frogs 80 Spread:

Florida State Seminoles (9) vs. Missouri Tigers (8)

Fantastic at both scoring and rebounding the basketball, the Seminoles have the pieces that can get to the basket early and often. However, the Tigers have the ultimate x-factor piece in Michael Porter Jr., an immensely talented athlete that can score and rebound the basketball at a high level. If Porter Jr. gets into a comfortable rhythm early on, the Seminoles will have a tough time suppressing what is an exceptional defensive rounding program.

Final Score: Seminoles 70 Tigers 74 Spread: Florida State -1.0

New Mexico State Aggies (12) vs. Clemson Tigers (5)

If the Aggies had an offense that was as gifted as their dynamic defense, they would have a great chance of making it to the Sweet Sixteen. As is stand though, the Aggies will have a tough time getting anything going against a Tigers team that is proficient at playing shut down defense and shooting perimeter shots.

Final Score: Aggies 68 Tigers 71 Spread: Clemson -5.0

This Is My 5000th Article For COED: Here’s How I Got This Far

On July 31, 2015, I walked into COED Media Group’s New York City office, well, lost.

I was heading into my 5th year at Rutgers University and had never held an internship before. My grades were garbage and my motivations cloudy — like most 21-year-olds, I didn’t know what the hell I wanted to be. But I could write. I could always write.

My “skill” or “eye” or “talent” or whatever-you-want-to-call-it for writing came at an early age, as I always seemed to prefer essays over exams.

“How could you want a test over a paper?” I’d ask my friends. “When you write a paper, the answers are literally right in front of you! You just need to write it!”

It took me over two decades to realize this, but my preference for essays instead of exams was actually just my writing talent manifesting itself — a talent I came to realize that not many others have.

Luckily for me, my transition from lost college kid with raw talent to full-blown professional was, relatively, smooth.

Four weeks on the job as an intern and I had already accumulated almost half-a-million views. Needless to say, the team already in place at COED was stunned, as I was lapping some of their most senior members. My internship began on the last day of July in 2015, and by September of that same year, I was a freelancer writer. By December, I had received a full-time offer. All that stood in the way was me actually finishing school, which was no easy feat.

The exact details are hazy, but my graduation from Rutgers University actually came down an intense after-class discussion with a professor, and not just any professor, but one of those teachers who think they’re as noble as knights. This class was a “CORE COURSE” for my Communications major — a class I absolutely had to pass. As life goes, I was hovering at about a 69% (#nice) due to my lack of attendance to the night class (attendance was one of my MANY issues with college — I pay to be here, if I want to bail on class, that’s my right — just because you want more people to hear you talk, Mr. Teacher, doesn’t mean I have to suffer because of it).

“Please, Professor Householder,” I pleaded. “I’ve done the work, I’ve passed the exams, I just couldn’t make it to class. Mondays and Wednesdays are when I go into the city for my freelance job. It’s almost impossible for me to make it to class!”

“Please, Professor Householder! My loans run out after this year — I have to pass this class or else I won’t be able to afford school anymore!”, I begged.

Householder was a tough S.O.B. — like I said, he was one of those people who believed teaching was amongst the planet’s most admirable professions — but I was desperate, so I fired off a shot that, whether it worked or not, would end the conversation either way:

“Professor Householder,” I said as I took deep, steady breath, “There are far bigger things at play here than your policies — this is my career we’re talking about here. Ten, five, ONE year from now, it won’t matter that I missed your class, no matter what the reason was. But what will matter is if I don’t graduate from this school and get this job. This is a life-altering moment for me and its in your hands. Please take care of it.”

And just like that, I walked out of his office without a clue of what my final grade would be.

As you can assume, Householder ended up giving me the C, allowing me to graduate from Rutgers in time to accept the full-time job at COED. Now, almost two years since that moment, here I sit. Now, not only am the most Senior Editor at COED, but I also write about movies & comic books for website, as well co-hosting a successful soccer podcast. In the two years since I walked out of Householder’s office armed with nothing but fear of the unknown, my life has improved exponentially. Because, truth be told, while I was a horrible (I mean HORRIBLE) college student, I’m an excellent employee.

The saying “if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life” is terribly worn-out and cliched at this point — especially amongst millennials — but it’s damn true. I’ve been employed for two years, and yet, the last day I can remember working is the day I took my college finals.

Whenever I tell someone what I do for a living (“Well, I work for COED, but then I also write about comic-books & host a soccer podcast), people are always so quick to compliment me on how cool they think it is that I get to do what I enjoy.  And trust me, it is — but it wasn’t always this way.

Before my first day as an intern — before July 31, 2015 — I thought my gamble in the game of life had gone wrong. Like I said, I was lost. While everyone spent their college years studying business or finance or law or any of the other trending careers in this country, I spent mine banking on talent, passion, and karma. And for a while, I truly thought I had chosen wrong. It’s important to remember that when I was starting my internship, most of my peers had already begun their careers. It’s easy to take credit for a gamble after you’ve reaped the rewards — it’s a much different story when the dice are still rolling around the table like they were a few short years ago. Luckily for you and I, the dice landed my way.

So who do I have to thank? Lots of people, really, myself included (though I’ll spare you of my self-adulation.)

First & foremost, my parents: despite the fact that their son was neither the most diligent student or disciplined kid, they never tried forcing me down a road I didn’t want to be on. They always believed in me. During a time where most parents would mandate their kid to “get their grades up or they’re coming home”, my parents let me grow and mature at my own pace. They believed in me and I’ll never forget the security I felt because of that.

Second, the team at COED, specifically, Bob & Dennis. Bob, the Chairman of COED Media Group (now officially Team Vyral), gave me my first career opportunity at a time when I wasn’t sure I even deserved one. Dennis, the Vice President, essentially taught me everything I know about the business. Still working side by side today, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without home.

Third, and finally, are you guys: the audience. Without the readers, there would be no COED Media Group or Summer 2015 internship. There wouldn’t be a freelance writing program and a full-time offer waiting for me on the other side of graduation. There wouldn’t be salaries and raises and health-insurance and all the other things that keep me alive. Without the audience, I wouldn’t have a career — I wouldn’t be here.

But I am here. I’ve made it.

Steph Curry Mini Mix: Celebrate #30 with 5 Iconic Highlights

WENN.com

Stephen Curry, the NBA’s only unanimous MVP in history, hasn’t gotten any less valuable to the Golden State Warriors. His player efficiency rating is through the roof, and he’s inches from a second foray into the 50-40-90 club. Stats aside, the Warriors are struggling without him while he nurses a “tweaked” ankle. Why? Teammate Kevin Durant puts it simply: Steph “is the system“. Houston’s James Harden has (for now) locked up the popular vote for 2017-18 MVP, but Steph could make a run at his first Finals MVP award this year–if he can make it past Harden’s beefed-up Rockets, of course. The two-time champ is nothing if not intensely motivated to lead his Golden State Warriors to their third NBA title in four years.

We hope Steph’s recovered from his surprise birthday party, which made waves on Twitter: ribs, appearances by Paramore and E-40, questionable dancing from Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, and two of his superstar teammates courting his grandmother with Luther Vandross karaoke were a few highlights. In the meantime, take in some of our favorite basketball highlights Steph has graced us with over the years:

His Record-Setting 13 Three-Pointers Against the Pelicans

Steph loves records. Breaking them, setting them, breaking his own–he’s, uh, good at basketball. So when he missed all ten of his three-point attempts in a game against the Lakers in November 2016, we were disappointed when he couldn’t extend his NBA-record 157 straight games with a three-pointer made (that’s just about two entire years, people). He was suddenly human… for three days. On November 7, Curry scored a bizarre 13 three-pointers in a home win over the Pelicans. Breaking a record he was already holding, of course (12, shared with Kobe Bryant and Donyell Marshall).

His Unreal Game-Winner in OKC

So let’s go back to that game, the one where he set the very record he broke in November 2016. Nine months earlier, in a regular season game against the OKC team fated to give Golden State a run for their money in the Western Conference Finals, Steph hit 12 threes in Chesapeake Energy Arena. That twelfth three-pointer came on a shot any coach not named Kerr would have nightmares about: pulling up from 30 with the game tied, in lieu of taking a timeout and advancing with six seconds left? Preposterous… for anyone but Curry. The Dubs collected win #62 of the historic 73 on this night.

This Picture-Perfect Assist

No dribbles necessary. Zaza Pachulia easily wins a jump ball against Paul George. Draymond Green gains possession, taking a chance on a Hail Mary pass to his point guard, somehow already at the opposite end of the court. Under the basket, Steph has to think fast, tossing a blind lob to a trailing Kevin Durant. Jeff Teague and Myles Turner are mummified. Ladies and gents, your 2016-17 #AssistOfTheYear.

Ankles, Beware

Steph’s been sidelined with an ankle injury, and we have to wonder if Rudy Gobert is smirking with vengeance. Last May, Steph and the Warriors waged war on Utah’s defense in the first game of an ultimate sweep. Primary target? Defensive Player of the Year hopeful Gobert. Stranded by his teammates on Curry Island, Gobert had little choice but to at least attempt to lock down the baby-faced assassin out at the three-point line. Sadly, Curry left him for dead. But not before giving him one last dance.

His Breakout Season

Returning from a disappointing, injury-riddled third-year campaign, Steph came for blood in 2012-13. He didn’t just put Golden State on the map: he was beginning to redesign the entire map of the NBA, which has centered the Warriors ever since. While leading the Bay Area to their first NBA playoff appearance since 2007, Steph was working on his most significant record-shattering accomplishment to date: 272 made three-pointers in a season. While he’d best that total in 2015 (and eclipse that total in 2016), it’s absolutely worth looking back at this chapter of the legend of Curry. Grab a snack, sit back, and watch all 272 splashes.

Larry Kudlow Net Worth 2018: How Much Is Larry Worth

When it comes to politics, Larry Kudlow has been on both sides of the coin, being both a Democrat and a Republican at different times during his life. Normally, that’s the perfect way to make enemies. Of course, it also helps that he’s also made a name for himself as both an economist and a journalist, not that it is impossible for economists and, dare I say, even journalists to get political. Let’s take a look at his career over the years, starting with his net worth!

Larry Kudlow Net Worth: $25 Million

Larry Kudlow’s net worth is estimated to be around $25 million. Let’s take a look at his career over the years to see how he came so far.

The Early Years

Instagram Photo

Born and bred in New Jersey, Kudlow studied at private school, going on to study at the University of Rochester in New York, earning a degree in history by 1969, also serving as a member of the left-wing Students for a Democratic Society at the school. In 1971, Kudlow attended Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, studying economics and politics, although he left before earning his master’s degree. Around this time, he was also part of Joseph Duffey’s “New Politics” senatorial campaign in Connecticut; he later found work as a staff economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

1981-1994

Kudlow was associate director for economics and planning in the Office of Management and Budget, a part of the Executive Office of the President, during the Reagan administration; at this time, he was also an advisory committee member of Freddie Mac. From 1987 to 1994, he worked for Bear Stearns as its chief economist and senior managing director. He was a member of the board of directors of Empower America, starting during this time.

1995-2008

By the end of the 90’s, Kudlow entered the journalistic field. In 1997, his first book, American Abundance: The New Economic and Moral Prosperity, was published by HarperCollins towards the end of the year. By 2001, he rose to become the Economics Editor at National Review Online. Branching out into television, he served as one of the hosts of the CNBC show America Now, towards the end of the year. By 2002, the show was partially renamed in his honor, becoming Kudlow & Cramer, with fellow host, Jim Cramer. At the start of 2005, he left to become the host of his own show, Mad Money, which was similarly renamed Kudlow & Company, later becoming The Kudlow Report. Over the years, other publications he worked for included the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Times and the Cato Journal of the Cato Institute.

2009-Present

In early 2009, it was rumored that Kudlow had aspirations for a run for U.S. Senator from Connecticut in 2010 but later announced that he was not running. He also toyed with the idea of another senatorial campaign the following year. By 2016, he once again his political career became the subject of speculation, as he was rumored for the position of then-President-elect Donald Trump’s chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers. On March 12, 2018, Kudlow was chosen by President Donald Trump to become his administration’s senior economic adviser.

Elizabeth Holmes Net Worth 2018: How Much Is The Theranos Founder Worth?

Elizabeth Holmes has had a rough go of it the past couple years. She’s an American entrepreneur and investor, and the founder and CEO of Theranos, a privately held blood test company based in Palo Alto, California. Theranos and Holmes have both made recent news for allegedly committing “massive fraud.” In 2015, Forbes named Holmes the youngest self-made female billionaire in the world due to a $9 billion valuation of Theranos. The next year when the alleged fraud reports were made, Forbes revised her net value, “From $4.5 Billion to Nothing.”

Elizabeth Holmes Net Worth: $0

Nothing to see hear. When Forbes says you’re worth nothing, everyone listens, including Holmes’ bank account. From billions to a goose egg is absolutely brutal. Let’s see how it all went down.

1984-2003

Instagram Photo

Elizabeth Holmes was born in February 1984 in Washington, D.C. Holmes studied Mandarin as a child and completed three years of summer language classes at Stanford University before graduating St. John’s School in Houston. During high school, Holmes was interested in computer programming and started her first business selling C++ compilers to Chinese universities. In 2001, Holmes applied to Stanford University and was named a President’s Scholar, which came with a stipend to use on a research project. She studied chemical engineering and used the stipend to work in a lab with Ph.D. candidates and Channing Robertson, dean at the engineering school.

2004-2012

Instagram Photo

In March 2004, she dropped out of Stanford’s School of Engineering and used her tuition money to fund a consumer healthcare technology company. This company later became Theranos (combination of “Therapy” and “Diagnosis”), whose goal was to make health information accessible to all people at any time so that risk of disease and health conditions could be detected early on. Holmes started with her first office in the basement of a college house, one employee, and rented lab space. By December 2004, she had raised $6 million from venture capitalists. The company’s first revenue came from contracts Holmes established with pharmaceutical companies to conduct testing and other clinical trials. By the end of 2010, Holmes had more than $92 million in venture capital for Theranos.

2013-2015

Instagram Photo

Holmes operated Theranos in stealth mode without press releases or a company website until September 2013 when the company announced a partnership with Walgreens to make in-store blood sample collection centers. Media attention increased in 2014 as she was on the cover of FortuneForbesT: The New York Times Style Magazine and Inc., who considered her “The Next Steve Jobs”. Forbes recognized Holmes as the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire and ranked her #110 on the Forbes 400 in 2014. Theranos was valued at $9 billion and with 50% stake in the company, Holmes was supposedly worth $4.5 billion. By the end of 2014, she had 18 U.S. patents and 66 foreign patents in her name.

2016-Present

Instagram Photo

It all started with a report from The Wall Street Journal in October 2015 that stated the Edison blood-testing device by Theranos might provide inaccurate results. This triggered multiple investigations into Theranos and their business processes, and over the next few years, Walgreens discontinued their partnership with the company, several class action fraud lawsuits were filed against the company, and 99% of shareholders exchanged their shares for preferred stock. On March 14, 2018, Holmes settled an Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit alleging fraud by making false or misleading statements about Theranos’ technology and business. The terms of the settlement included surrendering voting control of Theranos, a ban on holding an officer position in a public company for 10 years, and a $500,000 fine.

Northwestern University tweeted there is a person with a gun on its Evanston campus. Students and faculty have been told to shelter in place after a person with a gun was reported on the Evanston campus.

A person with a gun was reported at Northwestern University at 3:55 p.m. According to university officials, an armed person may be inside Engelhart Hall at Emerson and Maple. People are being urged to either shelter in place or avoid the area.

Update 4:45 P.M:

According to police chief Ryan Glew, someone called the police saying that he shot his girlfriend; at this time, they are starting to think that the whole thing was a hoax due to the lack of evidence.

University spokesman Jon Yates said that the Northwestern University Police Department is on the scene. Authorities are currently searching the campus, however, they have not found “evidence of a victim, scene, or gunman”

Engelhart Hall is a graduate student dormitory at Northwestern.

The Evanston Police Department tweeted that Evanston and NUPD checked the area and found no evidence of a victim, scene, or gunman found.

via Twitter:

“There is a report of a person with a gun in Engelhart Hall at the corner of Emerson Street and Maple Avenue. Evanston and Northwestern University police are on the scene. Seek shelter if in the area.”

Northwestern University is a private research university based in Evanston, Illinois, United States, with other campuses located in Chicago and Doha, Qatar, and academic programs and facilities in Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, California.

The shooting comes at a time of heightened awareness about our nation’s gun laws due to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 people dead. The reports of a gunman come on the same day as National School Walkout Day, where students across the country walked out of class to protest the nation’s gun laws.

The University is a founding member of the Big Ten Conference and is the only private university in the conference.

Mass shootings have plagued the United States for years now, with the massacres at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and a country music festival in Las Vegas being just a few of these tragedies that have left people with too many bodies to bury and not enough questions answered.

According to CNN, the United States makes up less than 5% of the global population, yet possesses 31% of its mass shooters. In addition, the gun homicide rate is more than 25x higher than other developed, high-income countries. The discussion over whether there is a correlation between these statistics and the number of guns in the United States is a matter of debate, which has only intensified in response to these incidents.

The rise in these shootings, with one seemingly happening every other day, has caused public discourse regarding gun control to escalate dramatically. In response to incidents like Stoneman Douglas, students have staged walkouts and activists have rallied in an effort to convince politicians to enact stricter gun control laws. These endeavors have faced resistance from gun activists and second amendment defenders.

GDC 2018

UBM/GDC

Happening every March during the final week of the month, thousands of gaming fans, publishers, and most importantly game developers converge on the city of San Francisco for a celebration/conference known as the Game Developers Conference. Set to begin on March 19th, the Game Developers Conference (GDC) serves as a place where fans and makers of games can gather to explore new ideas, attend conferences around every facet of the industry, and of course to debut new games for the first time.

With announcements last year like a wireless Wi-Fi enabled VR headset from Qualcomm, the first price cut for the insanely popular Oculus Rift and most importantly the reveal of NVIDIA’s 1080Ti graphics card. This year we’re not entirely sure what will be going down during GDC, but since Virtual Reality is having less and less of a push we can expect to see less of that and more of the popular Augmented Reality which has been used in games like Pokemon Go.

This year’s conference which is taking place at the Moscone Center in San Francisco will be seeing major developers joining the lineup to host talks or announce new products to the masses. Companies like Microsoft, Epic Games, Sony, and Ubisoft will all be in attendance and be hosting their own talks surrounding their upcoming products.

Police Confirm Northwestern University Active Shooter Reports Were Hoax

On the same day that walkouts have come out throughout the country demanding stricter gun laws and promoting school safety a month after the Parkside shooting, reports came out of an active shooter at Northwestern University, as announced on the school’s social media account. Students were told to stay in place by police while the school, and at least one other local high school, was placed on lockdown. Police later explained that they had been alerted to the school after an unidentified student claimed to have shot his girlfriend during a phone call.

What happened?

The school issued the following statement on its Twitter account:

“There is a report of a person with a gun in Engelhart Hall at the corner of Emerson Street and Maple Avenue. Evanston and Northwestern University police are on the scene. Seek shelter if in the area.”

“Police continue to investigate a reported incident at Engelhart Hall. Remain sheltered or avoid the area.”

“NUPD responding to Evanston campus emergency. Remain in safe place. If not on campus, stay away. More info will be provided when available.”

Evanston police also issued the following statement on Twitter:

“Evanston and NUPD in the area of Emerson and Maple. Report of gunman and shots fired in a residential building. Area checked no evidence of a victim, scene, or gunman found.”

Due to a lack of evidence, police now believe the incident was a ‘hoax’

According to The Chicago Tribune, police responded to reports of shots fired, only to find no evidence of a “victim, scene or gunman” during their initial investigation; the lack of evidence caused initial speculation that the incident was a hoax.

Evanston police Cmdr. Ryan Glew later revealed that police were alerted to the school after an unidentified person claimed to have shot his girlfriend; after struggling to find evidence, Glew suggested that the whole incident could have been a hoax. According to Chicago Tribune, he issued the following statement:

“That could be a possibility that we are also investigating…We’re still treating this as an active investigation.”

According to Chicago Sun News, police have officially called the incident a “hoax.” According to ABC News, the incident was directly dubbed a “swatting incident,” suggesting that it was a prank call directed towards the school.

On Twitter, Evanston police officially classified the incident as a “swatting incident,” adding that there were no people hurt or that people at the school were in any danger:

“The incident at Emerson and Maple was swatting incident. No victims or danger to the public. Area is secure. Police and Fire are clearing the area.”
