Why the Central Division Has Become The “Most Competitive In Hockey”

With only a few days left before the playoffs begin, observations of how each NHL team season faired out are in full swing. The one thing that many critics and fans sometimes forget about the season beside individual team results, is how an entire division performed as a whole. A lot of people qualified the Metropolitan Division to be the best group of teams this year after five teams in the division made the playoffs a year ago. But now with the season ending, the Central Division has proven all year-long that they are the top dog in the league, not just with how dominant several of their teams were, but just overall talent and depth combined of the seven teams.

For most of this decade, the Central Division has been owned by the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hawks — winners of three cups from 2010 to 2015 — have been the gold standard in the Central, while the other six teams in the division watched and groveled at their feet. But over the past two seasons, the dynamic has shifted in the Central and the competition is at an all-time high.

Where the Central has become the best starts with the Nashville Predators.

Last June, the Predators came within one game of forcing a game seven against the Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals. Following that disappointment, the Preds have used that defeat as motivation this year for what has turned out to be a brilliant season. Nashville’s dominance and success as one of the NHL’s best are due in part to Vezina favorite Pekka Rinne. Rinne has enjoyed one of the best seasons of his 12-year career, while the defense in front of him has shown once again why they are the best in the game being the second-best in goals-against average only allowing 2.49 goals a game. Their top-four (P.K. Subban, Roman Josi, Ryan Ellis and Mattias Ekholm) have been a driving force all year-long and continued to make them one of the most feared in the NHL.

Nashville will not have any forward over 70 points for the season, but their balance and depth have blended so well that their offense was top-ten in the league. The contributions of Filip Forsberg, Viktor Arvidsson, Ryan Johansen, Kevin Fiala, and several others have led the Preds to their best season in franchise history. Peter Laviolette’s troops have eclipsed the 110-point plateau for the first time in team history and are ready to make a run at a second straight Stanley Cup appearance.

The Predators are on the verge of their first Central Division title, President’s Trophy and if all goes according to plan in the playoffs, a Stanley Cup.

As I said earlier, the dynamic has shifted at throughout the Central, and one team, in particular, the Winnipeg Jets fall right into that category.

Question marks were raised all over Winnipeg about what to expect from the Jets coming into this season. And after the first few games, it looked like the team GM Kevin Cheveldayoff assembled might not have been ready to take the next step. But in November, pardon the pun, Winnipeg turned on the Jets and landed themselves back in the playoffs for the first time since 2014-15. Much of the credit to Winnipeg’s astounding season has to go to goalie Connor Hellebuyck. The Jets have been searching for a number one puck stopper for several years, and finally this year Hellebuyck answered the bell and his bust-out campaign has him as a possible contender for the Vezina Trophy for the league’s top goaltender.

But it’s not just the 24-year old Hellebuyck that has given the Jets their best season since moving from Atlanta to Winnipeg back in 2012-13. Their top-six (Nikolaj Ehlers, Paul Stastny, Patrik Laine, Kyle Connor, Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele) have formed one of the league’s best sextets. The rest of their forward group and the mix of old and young on the blueline have all been formidable, but it’s Laine that has reached superstardom.

Laine, a sophomore this season, expanded his case as to why he’s going to become the NHL’s next elite goalscorer. He reached the 40-goal plateau for the first time in his brief career and will finish in the top-three in goals when the season is finished.

While the Jets are poised to finally make some noise in the postseason, another club, the Minnesota Wild have been excellent all season long and finally look like they have the pieces in place to finally get to the Stanley Cup.

Instagram Photo

The State of Hockey once again was treated to another fantastic campaign from the Wild. Minnesota kept up with the Preds and Jets for most of the season, and even though they won’t win the division, they proved that they’re just as good. Despite missing forward Zach Parise for most of the year, the Wild’s potent offense has really led the charge. Eric Staal’s renaissance, the evolution of Mikhail Granlund and Jason Zucker, and a breakout year from Matt Dumba have all contributed to Minnesota’s exceptional year.

Defensemen Ryan Suter before he recently got hurt went on to have a career year, tying his career-best 51 points, which he sported in the 2015-16 season. Goaltender Devan Dubnyk’s performance has not gone unnoticed either. The 31-year old recorded his second 30-plus win season and has been the anchor for Minnesota in between the pipes.

The Wild have made the playoffs now in six straight seasons, turning them into one of the best the Central has to offer.

There are a few more qualities as to why the Central Division can be deemed the best in hockey.

The rebound of the Colorado Avalanche from the worst team in the league a season ago to a 90-plus point team and a possible wild card birth definitely adds some gumption to how much stronger the Central became. Forward Nathan MacKinnon put himself in the Hart Trophy conversation, while coach Jared Bednar has done a tremendous job molding a group of young studs and veterans into a competitive bunch.  Rookie center Alex Kerfoot has flown under the radar all season and is poised for a bright future.

Both the St. Louis Blues and Dallas Stars both hit the 90-point plateau driven by their superstar forwards Vladimir Tarasenko and Tyler Seguin.

As for the Blackhawks, they will miss the playoffs for the first time in ten years. But their run of excellence can’t be denied, and they are still widely respected as a threat, especially from their other six Central Division foes. Having elite scorer Patrick Kane and elusive captain Jonathan Toews still provides muscle. The club’s youth movement of Alex DeBrincat, Nick Schmaltz, Vinnie Hinostroza and Anthony Duclair has the Hawks still on the right track and never to be taken for granted.

Here are just a few bullet points to show the Central Division’s dominance:

-Three teams in the top-ten in points in the NHL

-Two teams over 110 points

-Six teams with 90 or more points

-Four teams in the top 15 with best home records

-13 players in the top-50 players in points

-Six players in the top-25 scorers in the league

-Three top-ten goalies in wins and save percentage

-Four teams in the top 15 in goals for per game

John Krasinski In Fantastic Four Reboot?

John Krasinski is no stranger to taking on big projects. He directed, and is starring in, the upcoming horror thriller A Quiet Place alongside his wife, Emily Blunt, which is getting lauded by critics and box office alike. Krasinski, who has been on the MCU radar before as runner-up to Chris Evans for the role of Captain America, would almost seem serendipitous that he, who lost out to Chris Evans, could now take the reins of the franchise that kicked off Evans’ career. A role like this could potentially launch Krasinski into the same level of stardom that Evans currently has, thanks to his performance as Steve Rogers.

In a recent interview with Screenrant, Krasinski said:

“Oh yeah, the Fantastic Four. I would love that! I mean listen, I’m still getting into the whole superhero thing. I didn’t read comics as a kid, not as many, I read some but not as much, but I’m a huge superhero fan so yeah, I’d love to do something like that. If they’re are any left, a lot of these have been taken but the ones that are left, yeah, I would love to do something like that. And listen, I’d love to work with her again so any chance I got would be great.”

Guess who would love to see that!? Krasinski is no stranger to fame, winning over hearts on The Office, as well as proving himself to carry his weight on the big screen both behind the scenes and in the spotlight.

What Makes Krasinski Right for Reed?

The casting for the First Family just never seemed to work for some reason. Call it a lack of chemistry, but Ioan Gruffudd and Jessica Alba in Fantastic 4 (2005) & Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) were not a fantastic pairing. The only one who walked away from that franchise unscathed was The Human Torch, Chris Evans, who ditched the spandex… for more spandex… and the role of a lifetime as Captain America (2011-Present).

Then in 2015 came the reboot no one was looking for, handing the role of Reed Richards off to Miles Teller. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Miles Teller. Give me some Whiplash any day of the week and I’m along for the ride. But besides the entire premise of the film, and great actors being cast and wasted, it’s best to just pretend this one never happened.

Now, let’s talk Krasinski. Any man who takes over the MCU Reed Richards is not going to be a throwaway. At 38 years old, he’s really in his prime to take on a franchise of his own, while other actors like Robert Downey Jr are just now turning 53 (Happy Birthday RDJ!) this gives Marvel a decade or more to use Krasinski to develop the character, the essence of the Fantastic Four family, the team dynamic, and most importantly, take on some of the galaxies nastiest villains that have yet to be seen.

I’m sure with the ‘Infinity Overload’ we’ve been receiving for the next few weeks, it’s doubtful that any headway will be made on potential casting for this essential reboot. Still, it’s interesting timing that Marvel recently planted the seed that they see a new Fantastic Four in the future, and John Krasinski being pressed about having interest in the role. Not only does Krasinski have the charisma of a leading man, he has that rare Hollywood normalcy that can be seen when he’s giving an interview or appearing on late night shows. Marvel is known for planning for the long game; I can think of no better sure bet than John Krasinski.

Florida (!) Teen Goes Full Ozzy Osbourne, Bites The Head Off A Live Chicken

While this saying has become cliched — and at only 25-years-old, really shouldn’t apply to me — but high school is just not how it was in my day. I graduated high school in 2011, and honestly, I’m glad I got out when I did.

Between ever-evolving social media and mass school shootings and weed vape pens and multiple gendered bathrooms and all the other craziness that happens in American high schools these days (that said, having Uber back then would have been clutcchhhh), it can be kind of hard to surprise me when it comes to the latest high school-related news.

But a Florida (of course) student breaking into a school in the middle of the night to bite the head off of a live chicken definitely qualifies as surprising.

via ClickOrlando:

A University High School student has been charged with animal cruelty and trespassing after deputies say he sneaked onto school property and bit the head off of a live chicken that was on campus for a school event, deputies said.

Deputies said the incident happened Saturday night, when the student trespassed onto campus at 11 p.m. Saturday and entered the chicken coop. The chickens were on campus for a “Farm to Table” event held earlier that day, according to a Facebook post from the sheriff’s department.

When a teacher arrived to campus Monday, she discovered a headless chicken in the parking lot, deputies said. The chicken’s head was later found inside the chicken coop, according to the post.

But how did this clearly not vegan student get caught? Security cameras you’re assuming, right?

The kid got caught how most high school kids get caught doing things: by bragging about it to other people! The SRO at University High School heard the school’s students bragging about a student biting the head off the chicken and the officer identified the student as a 17-year-old boy.

The teenager was arrested on a felony animal cruelty charge and trespassing and was released to his mother on Tuesday, April 3. Gotta imagine Mom needs to be a little concerned about her son after that one.

2018 Masters Preview: Tiger Woods’ Comeback

$

So much of the hype leading into this week’s Masters is related to Mr. Tiger Woods and whether or not he can finally end his near ten-year drought in major championships. It’s been even longer since his last green jacket — thirteen years. That he has a chance this week at all, a good one, in fact, is remarkable considering where he was 8 months ago. Publically humiliated after a DUI arrest and ensuing salacious mugshot, on top of all the back and knee trouble he has had pre-dating the 2009/2010 sex scandal, it seemed entirely plausible that Tiger may never play again.

And yet — defying the odds as only he can — he has indeed played, and played quite well. On the season so far he has garnered four top twenty-five finishes, two top tens and a runner-up at the Valspar championship in early March. He also had a chance to win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational a few weeks ago before a brainfart off the tee on the sixteenth hole on Sunday cost him. Occasional mental mistakes aside, Tiger has refound something in his game, and the old magic appears to be back.

His stats so far this season are impressive. He is in the top twenty-five of just about every strokes-gained category (save for driving), highlighted by 6th place in strokes gained around the green, 14th in strokes gained approaching the green and 11th in strokes gained-putting. He is fifth in overall scoring average and third in putts per round.

Instagram Photo

Tiger will be the most decorated Masters player in the field, what with his four green jackets, eleven top fives and thirteen top tens in twenty starts. Augusta National is a real veteran’s course, requiring experience and knowledge of it’s intricate, deceptive greens. Tiger, at 42, would indeed qualify as such a veteran, though he’s always had an almost spiritual connection with Augusta and the Masters.

If Tiger is to win, there are a couple of keys. In recent years, Tiger’s play off the tee at Augusta has held him back from truly contending. He will have the drive the ball consistently and avoid big misses into the trees on holes like one, nine, ten, thirteen and eighteen, among others. If he puts the ball in the fairway most of the time, if not all, he will be right there on Sunday.

The other big key for Tiger will be to relax. A noticeable tenant in Tiger’s experience on the golf course since the sex scandal, not just at Augusta but in general, has been a tendency to put too much pressure on himself week in and week out. One can see it in his breathing, his pained reaction to missed putts, his exasperation in imperfect iron shots. He will need to accept his trials and tribulations, the occasional mistake and not get bogged down. If he can take it all in stride, he will be better served and will be able to recollect himself. Too often this decade he loses his nerve during rounds over things he either cannot control or can fix but won’t, blinded by anger and nerves.

Tiger will be playing with accomplished internationalists Marc Leishman and Tommy Fleetwood. They will tee off at 10:42 on Thursday and 1:27 on Friday.

10 Most Outrageous Zlatan Ibrahimović Quotes

Officially making his debut with the LA Galaxy this past Saturday, forward Zlatan Ibrahimović came to impress. The crowd chanted, “We want Zlatan” and in the 71st minute, they got their wish. He only played a total of 19 minutes in the match vs LAFC, but in that little time, Zlatan scored two stunning goals. Prior to that, he had only trained with the LA Galaxy one time before. Due to his outstanding performance, Zlatan was awarded the Alcatel Major League Soccer Player of the Week. Besides his spectacular skills with the ball, Zlatan is also known for his fiery personality and over-the-top sayings. Here are nine of his best.

1. “No way, Zlatan doesn’t do auditions.”

Instagram Photo

From the start of his career, Zlatan’s personality has stayed consistent. Even at a young age, he carried an overly confident demeanor. In 2000, Arsenal coach Arsene Wegner had taken interest in the teenager; however, Zlatan turned down the offer once Wegner asked him to do a trial for the team, and responded with this quote.

2. “When you buy me, you are buying a Ferrari. If you drive a Ferrari you put premium petrol in the tank, you hit the motorway and you step on the gas. [Pep] Guardiola filled up with diesel and took a spin in the countryside. He should have bought a Fiat.”

Instagram Photo

Zlatan had a very short run on FC Barcelona, mostly due to his disagreements with coach Pep Guardiola. The two never exactly saw eye-to-eye, and when Zlatan left after only one season with the team, he didn’t hold back his feelings towards the issue.

3. “Give them a bicycle with my autograph and that will be enough.”

Instagram Photo

During an interview, the then Paris Saint-Germain striker was asked about Sweden’s top female players, specifically how much they should be paid. Zlatan was quick to answer with this snarky remark.

4. “Lions, they don’t compare themselves to humans.”

Instagram Photo

In another interview, Zlatan was asked who he thought the best strikers in the Premier League were. He mentioned Aguero and Lukaku, but funnily enough he didn’t name himself. Confused the interview asked Zlatan why he left out his name. The ever-so-humble Zlatan answered with this.

5. “What do you mean, ‘present?’ She got Zlatan.”

Instagram Photo

When Zlatan was asked about what present he bought for his former fiancee, he gave his honest response.

6. Zlatan: “Only God knows who will go through.”
Reporter: “It’s hard to ask him.”
Zlatan: “You’re talking to him.”

Instagram Photo

A reporter had speculated about who would win the match between Sweden and Portugal to qualify for the 2014 World Cup. Zlatan shamelessly expressed his thoughts.

7. “A World Cup without me is nothing to watch, so it is not worth waiting for the World Cup.”

Instagram Photo

After Sweden lost to Portugal and failed to qualify for the World Cup, Zlatan wanted people to know that there was nothing more to see. Cue Porky the Pig breaking through the face of the red drum saying with a wave of his hand, “That’s all folks!”

8. “Absolutely not. I have ordered a plane. It is much faster.”

Instagram Photo

Annoyed at rumors that he bought a Porsche, Zlatan let everyone know exactly what he thought about that.

9. “It’s Zlatan-style.”

Instagram Photo

Zlatan was once asked by a reporter whether or not his style of play was Yugoslavian or Swedish since he plays for Sweden but his parents of are Yugoslavian descent. He disregarded either choice and instead said this.

10. “The older I get, the better I get, like red wine.”

Instagram Photo

Zlatan oozes arrogance, but the 36-year-old may have a point. He’s been the Swedish Forward of the Year winner eleven times and has scored 405 times out of the 684 games he has played in. Now his performance so far in the MLS is backing this statement up.

Courtney Alfred, a 39-year-old alternative school principal, has been accused of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student. Alfred was a principal at a Bedford, Ohio alternative school.

Alfred, 39, of Northfield, Ohio, has been charged with sexual battery in a series of incidents that allegedly happened during the 2016 school year at Education Alternatives.

According to reports, police say that the unidentified teen took a video of the two having sex. Alfred was identified in the video by her tattoo.

via Cleveland.com:

The student came to the Bedford Police Department on March 19 to report that Alfred had sex with him at the school. He provided text messages and a cellphone video that showed him having sex with a woman with a tattoo, court records say.

Detectives obtained a search warrant and confirmed Alfred has a matching tattoo before they arrested her Wednesday, court records say. Education Alternatives placed Alfred on administrative leave after learning of the allegations against her, the organization’s Executive Director Gerald Swartz said Tuesday in an email.

“Upon learning of the allegations, EA immediately began investigating and working with law enforcement,” Swartz said. “The employee has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.”

Alfred pleaded not guilty to the sexual battery charge and was bailed out on a $25,000 bond. Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 16.

Why The Pacific Division Has Become “The Most Competitive” In Hockey

The teams that make up the Pacific Divison of the NHL have truly improved by leaps and bounds, which allowed three teams– the Las Vegas Golden Knights, San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings to clinch a spot in the playoffs. Here is why the Pacific Division is a force to be reckoned with.

Instagram Photo

Playoff Contenders

The Golden Knights coming out at the top of the Pacific division, have more than proved themselves as an expansion team this season. The players themselves have trained their hardest to make it this far. The Knights are the first expansion team to be immediately successful from the start, kicking off their season winning 9 out of their first ten games.

The standout players on this team include their goalie Marc-Andre Fleury formally of the Pittsburgh Penguins. He’s had one of his best seasons yet with 45 goal saves and 29 wins with the Golden Knights during the regular season. William Karlsson whose been a standout player on the Golden Knights since the beginning of the season, just scored the goal of the year on Sunday. He was able to slide the puck right between Shark’s goaltender Mark Jones’ legs on a breakaway.

Instagram Photo

The San Jose Sharks suffered a rough start in October after their 2-1 loss to Boston. But they didn’t let them discourage them. Coach Peter DeBoer began juggling forward line combinations to see if a switch in player combinations would help the Sharks odds. Slowly but surely as March started so did the Shark’s eight-game winning streak. The Sharks spent this last month playing catch up but have now clinched their playoff spot.

The standout players that helped the Sharks achieve this goal are Logan Couture a centerman, whose had 33 goals this season, along with Brent Burns who had 65 assists.

Instagram Photo

The Los Angeles Kings still have a chance at the playoffs, and they have been playing better lately, currently third in their overall division. The 96 points in total they’ve scored this season just proves their capable of it. The Kings already have 48 wins under their belt. Anze Kopitar has also been a significant advantage to them as well. He’s made over 35 goals this season alone. Kopitar was the key to the Kings clinching their playoff spot.

The Teams Who Didn’t Make the Cut

The Anaheim Ducks definitely went through a rough time during this regular season, but have recently been fighting back. After the Ducks’ 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday and Ondrej Kase scoring 1:34 into overtime, I think they definitely upped their chances at the possibility of playoffs.

The Calgary Flames haven’t had the best season, so their chances are 50/50 at playoffs right now. There is definitely room for improvement with this team, with a total of 34 losses this regular season.

The Edmonton Oilers have nearly balanced out their wins and losses this season. With a totally of 34 wins and 40 losses. Conor McDavid through all of this has still managed to remain the team’s most reliable goal scorer with a total of 41 goals this season.

The Vancouver Canucks players suffered a lot of injuries this season which definitely affected their chances at playoffs. Brock Boeser holds the top goal percentage this season with 29 goals.

The Arizona Coyotes, place last in the Pacific Divison with only 29 wins under their belt and 40 losses. With a better defense, they can change their outcome for next season.

Yoenis Cespedes Net Worth 2018: How Much Is Yoenis Worth?

Yoenis Cespedes is one of the most polarizing players in baseball. He hits moonshots, has a cannon for an arm, and has arguably baseball’s best bat flip. He has had quite an exciting life, coming to the MLB from Cuba. Let’s take a look at it, starting with his net worth.

Yoenis Cespedes Net Worth: $86 million

Cespedes has made $86 million dollars over his first six seasons in the MLB. This is without accounting for the $29 million he is slated to make from the three-year extension he signed with the Mets last year.

Early Life

Instagram Photo

Cespedes was born in Granma Province, Cuba, in the town of Campechula. Both his parents were athletes, his mother Estela played catcher for the Cuban softball team in the 2000 Olympics. Cespedes defected from Cuba in 2011 and established residency in the United States in early 2012. He immediately became an unrestricted free agent and drew interest from nearly every MLB team. Cespedes was considered a “generational talent” after his time on the Cuban National team that competed in the World Baseball Classic. He eventually signed a four year, $36 million contract with the Oakland Athletics.

2012-2015

Instagram Photo

Cespedes proved that he was worth the money right away, batting .292 and hitting 23 home runs in his rookie season. He ended up finishing second in American League Rookie of the Year voting, behind Mike Trout. In 2013, he won the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game in New York City. His success couldn’t carry over to the playoffs that year, and the Athletics were eliminated by the Detroit Tigers in the ALDS. In 2014, he was voted as an All-Star for the first time. Cespedes again won the Home Run Derby, becoming the first back to back champion since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1999. He was then traded at the trade deadline to the Boston Red Sox for pitcher Jon Lester and outfielder Jonny Gomes. After the 2014 season, Cespedes was traded again, this time to the Detroit Tigers for future Cy Young award winner Rick Porcello. During his Gold Glove-winning season in 2015, Cespedes was traded for a third time. This time, to the New York Mets. The Mets acquired him at the trade deadline for future Rookie of the Year Michael Fulmer. Cespedes helped carry the Mets to the World Series in 2015, where they lost to the Royals in five games.

2016- Present

Cespedes resigned with the Mets in 2016, he signed a three year, $75 million contract. Cespedes was voted as an All-Star for the second time in 2016 but didn’t play due to injury. He opted out of his deal after the first season, but resigned for four years and $110 million. 2017 was very injury riddled for Cespedes, as he only played 81 games. He hit 17 home runs, including three on April 11 against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Just How Dominant Is UAlbany’s Men’s Lax Team In 2018

For college Lacrosse fans across the nation, one thing is for sure, the University at Albany’s Men’s team is the team to beat. The Great Danes have started the season 10-0, defeating Maryland(2) 11-10, Cornell(10) 11-9 and Syracuse(8) 15-3 along the way. Led by senior Connor Fields and freshman Tehoka Nanticoke, UA leads the NCAA in goals per game with 15.4 and is tied with Army for the top spot in goals allowed per game, with 7. With a team that is close to record-breaking dominance on both sides of the ball, a record of 10-0 isn’t surprising. Here is what their opponents are up against.

New to the purple and gold this year is freshman Tehoka Nanticoke. Described by Albany’s head coach as “once-in-a-generation,” Nanticoke’s impact on the field was felt in the first game of the season. In that game, the #1 ranked recruit in the class of 2017 scored five goals against Syracuse on their own turf. A performance no one should scoff at on its own, it helped the underdog Danes rout Syracuse 15-3. Since that first game, Nanticoke has not slowed down. He has scored 50 points this season for an average of five per game. Those numbers put him at #1 for total goals scored and ppg. His performance so far has earned him five America East Rookie of the Week awards as well. Though with all of those numbers, he is only the second highest scorer on the squad. With 58 goals scored through the first nine games, senior Connor Fields leads the team in goals scored and leads the nation with 6.4 points per game, despite having missed their last game with a sprained right MCL.

Instagram Photo

Even while missing two of their starting attackmen during their last game against Stony Brook, the Danes still came home with a 13-7 win.“We didn’t really go out and do anything different,” Nanticoke said after the game. “We’ve got three attackmen that can play, and we’re just going to go out and do what we’ve been doing all year.” For that game, UA was missing senior Connor Fields due to his sprained MCL and senior Justin Reh to an upper-body injury. If this game showed one thing, it’s Albany’s depth. They have seven players who have already put up double-digit points on the season.

Also having an outstanding season is sophomore TD Ierlan. The face-off specialist is on pace to obliterate the NCAA single-season record for faceoffs won. Mark Gowers of Towson set the current record of 77.6% in 1994. Ierlan is currently sitting at 83.8% with four games left on the season, going 24-for-24 in their last outing.

Not to be outdone by the offense, redshirt senior goalie JD Colarusso has stopped 64.1% of shots that have come his way this season. Unsurprisingly, with that percentage, he leads the nation in shots saved and has helped Albany stay on top with an average of 7 goals allowed this season.
Instagram Photo
With four games left in the regular season, the Danes look to close out the season with their undefeated record intact. Of those four opponents, only Yale(3) is ranked in the top 20. Seeing as they have a nation-leading offense and goalie, it isn’t hard to believe that anything less would be seen as a disappointment.

The Magicians season 3 kicked off with ‘The Tale of the Seven Keys’, an epic quest the group must undertake to restore magic. After the final key was secured from the Fairy Realm in the penultimate episode by High King Margo from the Fairy Queen, along with giving Margo a new eye to replace the one the Fairy Queen stole from her last season, it seemed now all our group of grad students had to do was make it to the castle at the end of the world… a place the gods stored away their creation that, um… didn’t work out as well as humans. At least Julia is god-touched, right? Nothing to worry about there!

The Castle At The End Of The World

Nothing like a ride on a floating ship to take on literal gods in a battle to bring magic back! Julia transfers enough of her magical energy to Quentin to cast a spell if things go south, which comes in handy as he uses that to incept a knight who is captive in the castle. Lucky for him, she’s willing to trade the location of a back door to the castle and in exchange, Quentin takes her place and stays behind.

Once inside, Quentin meets the monster… his soon to be new boss, who turns out to be a young boy looking for someone to play with. Before Quentin can hope to win over the young gods affection, Eliot unloads a fatal shot with the god killing bullet they brought along as a last resort. Too bad the creature can jump bodies! Best think your plans through, that’s what got them into this mess to begin with.

Guess what, Alice came with motives of her own! She melted the seven keys by using the magic-giving fairy powder she bartered with The Library for in exchange for destroying the keys, believing that life without magic is better and no one deserved this gift. Enter god-level Julia whose connection to her friends brings her to the castle where she uses every bit of magic she has to reforge the keys. The magic fountain is back on… just not for everyone like they had planned.

While the group debates how exactly to go about getting into the castle and bringing magic back, Julia gets a visit from a young god, Iris, who instills in her a new purpose: time to be a full fledged goddess! Clearly she’s made some progress from victim to heroine by using her god given magic for good and enough so to have earned her a spot on the team. This also means she’s off the key quest to go roll with the gods. Get it girl.

Julia’s off with her new mentor Iris learning how to shape worlds, but finding it difficult to lose the bonds between her friends and their wellbeing. She knows she needs to intercede or they’ll fail. Knowing the risk, and the cost, she leaves to join them in the castle at the end of the world to bring magic back.

Tread Lightly, Kids

Off to meet the divine woman who drafted the architectural schematic for the castle, a CEO named Caly, she explains how she worked with the gods to ensure the castle could only be found through a meticulous quest and that gods died ensuring only the worthy could fulfill the task. She showed them the castle is actually juxtaposed from Margo’s castle in Fillory, literally on the other side of that world if you were to flip the map around. However, the creature that is locked inside must never escape once they make it inside the walls. This is stressed so much you can almost feel the thing putting his coat on getting ready to leave.

Deal Or No Deal

Youtube.com/Syfy

Youtube.com/Syfy

The various deals to get magic back on the low, made by The Library, the McAllister Family, Dean Fogg, and Alice come to a head-on collision. The Library and Irene McAllister are hunting fairies in Fillory (since grinding them up and snorting them gives you magic, duh) and to save the lives of her people, the once deplorable Fairy Queen offers her own life, and in exchange no more fairies would succumb to being hunted. They accept her deal, but if we learned anything this season, fairy deals always have an unforeseen cost.

Alice receives a ‘memory wipe potion’ from Dean Fogg, knowing that once she has a taste of magic again by helping The Library, she won’t be able to stop… so she’ll have to stop herself by purging all memory of who she was. She confesses this to Quentin, along with her true feelings, and they share a final kiss before they embark on the castle at the end of the world, both unsure of their fates.

So the magic fountain is flowing again… but there’s literally no time to celebrate. This signals The Library, Irene McAllister, both now teamed up with Dean Fogg, to place a siphon (power source for containing magic) on the fountain so the only stream of magic flows directly to The Library, giving them control of all magic. To top it off, Dean Fogg came bearing more gifts: MEMORY WIPE POTIONS FOR EVERYONE!!! Alice is now a prisoner of The Library for not fulfilling her deal in full, and Quentin, Eliot, Margo, Julia, Kady, Penny, and Josh are all living normal lives as if they had no memory of what happened – because they don’t.

Technically, the quest was a success! Magic is back, only now it’s being rationed out like food stamps based on what The Library deems suitable to give. Side note, that creature they were warned not to let out of the castle, can swap bodies and took up residence in Eliot before they left. With no memory of who they are or even the existence of magic, our heroes are scattered with only one thing connecting them: the creature who is very much alive in a new form ready to hunt them down.

Police fatally shot Saheed Vassell, a 34-year-old black man, in Crown Heights, Brooklyn Wednesday afternoon.

Officers opened fire and struck the man at least once in the abdomen. He was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County where he was pronounced dead.

It was later reported that Vassell was actually holding a “pipe”, rather than a gun. Angry crowds gathered at the scene shortly after the incident and denounced the police, calling them “murderers.”

Andre Wilson, 38, said he’s known the victim for 20 years, describing him as a quirky neighborhood character.

“All he did was just walk around the neighborhood,” he said. “He speaks to himself, usually he has an orange bible or a rosary in his hand. He never had a problem with anyone.”

‘The Magicians’ Season 4: Return Date For The Next Season

SYFY plans to kick off the New Year with a bang… of magic, that is! The Magicians have been renewed for a fourth season comprising of 13 episodes. There is no official confirmation when, however, the rumor is we can expect the new season to air mid-January, early 2019. Official confirmation and trailer expected to drop this fall. After the most successful season to date, here’s what we can expect from the next installment!

For those who are curious about the show and looking to see what all the hype is about… you’re in for a treat and can stream previous seasons on SYFY.com now. According to SYFY, the show,

“Based upon Lev Grossman’s best-selling books, The Magicians centers around Brakebills University, a secret institution specializing in magic. There, amidst an unorthodox education of spell casting, a group of twenty-something friends soon discover that a magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real— and poses grave danger to humanity.”

What Could The Magicians Season 4 Be About?

Instagram Photo

Big things are in store for The Magicians next season now that magic is back and the gang has absolutely no memory of who they are, what they accomplished, or even that magic is real. Literally anything can happen from this point. Hell, they don’t even know their own names! It’s one thing to get screwed over by a power hungry institution, that happens all the time, but to bring back magic only to have it used against you is a pretty nasty turn of events.

The first major problem, there is no High King in Fillory now that Margo has no memory of her life (and going by the name Janet). The only one there is Fen, serving as interim High King, who I expect will have to wait a lot longer than expected to relinquish the royal duty. This puts everyone in jeopardy especially since Margo and Eliot just won back the trust of the country and everyone was finally on the same page.

I would think Alice, now prisoner of The Library, will run into Penny (the real Penny) who is still trapped down there and unable to leave due to his lack of a physical body and the contract he signed. Alice is the only one who still has her memories so if Penny finds her somehow, that can be a starting point to find the others and somehow reverse what was done to their memories.

The Library is now in control of who gets magic. This seemed to be a shady deal made by Dean Fogg in order to get his school back, assuming Irene McAllister is still running things behind the scenes. This next season has so much potential to explore how magic, even when believed to be regulated, can cause unforeseen ramifications. Not to mention, the only magicians strong enough to help if shit hits the fan won’t be able to… not yet anyway.

How Has This Season Impacted What’s To Come?

Instagram Photo

The women really took center stage this season, Margo in particular, winning the first ever Fillorian election becoming High King. Julia became a literal god and freed a collective of enslaved faeries. Kady went to the Underworld and back in attempts to save Penny. Alice for the first time has no magic and therefore is uncertain of her place in the world and whom she should trust.

Things were a bit tougher for the men of magic this go around. Eliot lost his crown in Fillory, along with his kingdom. Quentin can’t seem to reconnect with Alice and a fling with Poppy definitely didn’t help his cause. Penny died and got stuck in the astral plane while his body burned… only to have Penny 23 (the 23rd version of himself from the 40 time loops) assume his place.

If this season was about building our heroes up, it ended by tearing them down. There’s a monster on the loose, and I have a feeling the creature inside Eliot isn’t the only dangerous thing lurking in the shadows now that magic is back. We trust in institutions to keep us safe, but in the end, it was those very institutions that took advantage of the students’ willingness to bring back magic. Like the Fairy Queen always said… deals come with a cost.

I’m excited for The Library to learn how impossible it is to control magic, along with Dean Fogg realizing that bartering his students for his own school back would only come back to bite him. It was definitely a topical season, right down to the Harvey Weinstein references. The Magicians were on their A-game and I expect nothing less from Sera Gamble & Lev Grossman in the future.

Mitchell Hoenig, 20-year-old University of Minnesota student, died in late February due to alcohol poisoning. Hoenig’s death was reportedly caused by drinking excessive amounts of alcohol during a night of partying.

Hoenig, a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and a College of Biological Sciences Dean’s List honoree, was hospitalized Friday, February 23 and died two days later from complications of alcohol poisoning. Reports indicate that Hoenig’s night began at official sorority events and ended in a Dinkytown apartment. Furthermore, cocaine use was a contributing factor in Hoenig’s death.

According to reports from the Minnesota Daily, Hoenig attended two Gamma Phi sorority events on the Thursday night before his death.

Following his cardiac arrest on February 23, Hoenig was placed on life support for the next two days and before being pronounced dead on February 25 at 12:41 p.m.

via Minnesota Daily:

Hoenig then attended a Gamma Phi date party at Sawyers on 5th in the Lumber Exchange Event Center in downtown Minneapolis from about 9 to 11 p.m., according to sources and photos taken at the event.

Between the pre-party and the date party, attendees were required to check in at the Gamma Phi sorority house. Those under 21 were supposed to receive black Xs on their hands, and those over 21 were supposed to receive wristbands, according to Gamma Phi members and date party attendees.

He was drinking at the pre-party, one Gamma Phi member said, along with other minors, according to two members and a date party attendee. Hoenig also had access to alcohol at the date party, according to photos and a Gamma Phi member, but it’s unclear if he drank there.

An ambulance called to The Marshall apartment building in Dinkytown, 515 14th Ave. SE, at 5:18 a.m. transported Hoenig to the Hennepin County Medical Center. The Minnesota Daily was unable to confirm Hoenig’s activities between the Greek events and ambulance call.

Hoenig, who was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and a College of Biological Sciences Dean’s List honor’s student, was an organ donor. According to Hoenig’s sister, a 67-year-old man received his heart, a 66-year-old man received his lungs, a 63-year-old man received his liver, a 44-year-old man received his pancreas and one of his kidneys and an 11-year-old girl received his other kidney.
