For the fifty-third time in the show’s history, the Academy of Country Music Awards will be held this Sunday, April the fifteenth on CBS. The show will boast several performances from high profile Country stars like Toby Keith, Lady Antebellum and Carrie Underwood, among big names. Reba McEntire will host, her 15th time at the helm.

On top of hosting duties, McEntire is nominated in the Female Vocalist of the Year category, along with Kelsea Ballerini, Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris and Carrie Underwood. In the Male Vocalist of the Year category, the five nominees are Jason Aldean, Thomas Rhett, Chris Stapleton, Keith Urban and Chris Young. Lambert and Rhett look to repeat in those categories, having won last year.

Urban, Lambert, Stapleton and Sam Hunt are nominated in the Song of the Year category. Overall, Stapleton leads all with eight nominations. Also, Lambert can become the winning-est performer in ACM history with just one award Sunday night.

The most anticipated event of the night will be Carrie Underwood’s performance. The American Idol winner suffered a nasty fall back in November down the stairs in her home in Nashville, Tennessee. She will sing her latest single “Cry Pretty” in what is her first television appearance since the scare. Another performance that has generated buzz is the duet that will be taken place between McEntire and another former American Idol winner in Kelly Clarkson. They will be singing “Does He Love You,” a 1993 single by McEntire and Linda Davis.

The Early Years

Born Barbara Pierce, Bush is a native of New York and is the descendant of early New England colonist Thomas Pierce Jr. After attending boarding school in South Carolina, at the age of 16, she met her future husband George Herbert Walker Bush, then a student at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, at a dance during Christmas vacation. The two were engaged to be married before he went off to World War II. During the first thirteen years of their marriage, the couple had six children: George W., Pauline “Robin”, John Ellis “Jeb,” Neil Mallon, Marvin Pierce and Dorothy “Doro.”

1950-1965

Eventually, by 1966, George Sr. would be elected as a U.S. Representative in Congress from Texas. Over the years, during various elections involving her husband, Barbara Bush would either be helping her husband on the campaign trail or be raising the children. Her husband’s political career would place her in various positions over the years, notably when Bush became the head of the U.S. Liaison Office in the People’s Republic of China in 1974, allowing her to live in the country.

1980-1987

In 1980, George Sr. announced his candidacy for President of the United States, ultimately losing the nomination to California Governor Ronald Reagan, although becoming Reagan’s running mate and eventual Vice President. During her time as Second Lady of the United States, she became known for working with various literacy organizations.

1988-1993

Within eight years of his vice presidency, George Sr. would once again announce plans to run for President, this time proving successful. With her husband’s election, Bush rose to the position of First Lady, helping to continue pushing for literacy, notably going on to develop the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. She was also active in the White House Historical Association and the White House Preservation Fund during this time.

1994-Present

In 1994, Bush’s son George would run for Governor of Texas in the gubernatorial election. Within five years, he himself would run for President of the United States and she appeared as a fixture within his campaign. Upon the death of Nancy Reagan in 2016, she became the oldest living First Lady, as well as the only living First Lady to also be the mother of a former president. In 2017, she made headlines when both she and her husband were hospitalized. In 2018, a spokesperson for the family announced that Babara would no longer receive hospital treatment, being further treated at home for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and congestive heart failure

Autumn Sienna Heinz, a Montana daycare worker who worked with infants, has been accused of smoking meth while on the job, using a “drug den” built below a cabinet.

What happened?

According to KRTV, police have said that the supposed “drug den” was locked in from the inside so people could not enter, with a vent fan also being used to try and hide the smell. Despite that, the meth fumes permeated the entire building, with every room testing positive for meth, including the room the infants were in.

An employee was originally alerted to the situation when a possible drug kit was found at the daycare, leading employees to call officials. Officials found a glass pipe that appeared to contain meth residue and a plastic tube filled with white crystals, also testing positive for meth. Other items found at the scene included small snort tubes, lighters, small black air filter and a battery powered light.

Who is Autumn Sienna Heinz?

Heinz, who was 30 at the time of the incident, was a full-time employee for three years at the YMCA Learning Center daycare building, where she worked in the infant area.

At this time, she currently faces charges of endangering the welfare of a child, criminal possession of dangerous drugs and criminal mischief, all three of which are considered felony charges. It is known that she had requested a lawyer for the upcoming court case concerning the story.

While being interviewed by detectives, Heinz admitted that she had a history of drug use, including heroin and opioid pills, having been at the Methadone Clinic in 2013, stopping sometime around last year. Heinz originally told police she admitted to constructing the cabinet that would be deemed the “drug den,” but said that it was meant for breaks, not admitting to using meth to investigators.

The Greatest Royal Rumble is a once in a lifetime event, featuring an unprecedented 50-man Royal Rumble match. And for the first time ever, the WWE will host a pay-per-view live from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Many great matches are scheduled for this event, including a WrestleMania rematch between “The Beast Incarnate” Brock Lesnar and “The Big Dog” Roman Reigns inside a steel cage match for the WWE Universal Championship.

There are plenty of high-profile, main-event level matches to look forward to at the Greatest Royal Rumble extravaganza. “Y2J” Chris Jericho is scheduled to return to the ring to take on “The Deadman” The Undertaker in a casket match. “The Bulgarian Brute” Rusev was originally penned to be The Undertaker’s opponent. However, he was replaced by Y2J following a tweet where Rusev told The Undertaker, “Bury me softly, brother.” Rusev’s video interview with TMZ was also poorly received, as he called The Undertaker “a lil’ past his prime.”

“The Game” Triple H is scheduled to wrestle as he’ll face off against former 16-time world champion John Cena. Both men are looking to make up for their disappointing WrestleMania defeats. Cena wants to make-up for a squash match loss to The Undertaker. Meanwhile, Triple H wants to remind the fans that he’s still a badass even though he got beat up by “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey at ‘Mania.

The WWE fans at the King Abdullah International Stadium will also see the crowning of the new WWE Raw Tag Team Championships as the tournament for the vacant titles conclude at this event.

I’m sure the film, “Forrest Gump,” rings a bell to many cinephiles — but most importantly, we saw that Gump wasn’t ‘born’ to do anything, does not have valid reasons to take the jobs he takes. Gump just did. Let’s just say, it’s the same way for a humble star quarterback in the National Football League — and that’s Theodore Bridgewater Jr. The 25-year-old leading Heisman contender — who was once called “Gump,” back when he played high school football because his teammates and coaches thought it would be a great acronym for him which stood for “Great Under Major Pressure.” And he definitely is.

Bridgewater Jr. is an American professional football player who is a quarterback for the New York Jets. Not to mention, he has been awarded many titles since joining the NFL, such as getting sent to the Pro Bowl. He has also recorded 6,150 yards since joining with the Minnesota Vikings in 2014.

Teddy Bridgewater Jr. Net Worth 2018: $5 million

At one point on the field, Bridgewater Jr. signed a four-year contract worth $6.85 million with a $3.3 million signing bonus with the Minnesota Vikings. However, his contract would not toll into the 2018-19 season. How come? Well, he decided to land with the New York Jets as a free agent, and he could be making up to $15 million on the one-year deal. As for base salary, he will make around $5 million on the deal.

Early Years

For Bridgewater Jr., his discipline was developed at a very young age, in part, by his father, Teddy Sr., an Army veteran. And so did his passion and love for football begin when he was just a kid. He was born in Miami, Florida on November 10, 1992. For high school, he attended Miami Northwestern, where he began to shine as a prominent quarterback. It was his sophomore year when he took over as starting quarterback and was later regarded as a four-star recruit, becoming the sixth-best dual-threat quarterback prospect in the nation. Upon graduating from high school, Bridgewater attended the University of Louisville and took his team to the 2013 Sugar Bowl to win it as underdogs, as well as being named the game’s MVP. It’s not just his athleticism that makes him stand out — but it’s his ability to overcome great adversity professionally and personally without losing faith once.

2014-2018

In 2014, Bridgewater Jr. was officially a Viking, after being drafted as the 32nd and final pick of the first round of the draft. Despite an injury to his ankle, he managed to score his first NFL career touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons on his opening day as a starter. A few weeks later, he threw his first NFL career touchdown against the Buffalo Bills and was definitely making a name for himself early on with the Vikings. As the season came to a close, he was selected as the quarterback of the 2014 NFL All-Rookie team by the Pro Football Writers of America. On top of that, he won the 2014 Pepsi Rookie of the Year award, as voted by fans.

In 2015, this was arguably the best year of his career. When he faced against a tight defensive team, the Detroit Lions, he went 25 of 35, 316 yards, two touchdown passes and no interceptions. It wasn’t until January 25, 2016, when he was named to his first Pro Bowl.

In 2016, things looked ugly for Bridgewater Jr. as he suffered a non-contact injury to his left leg. As a result, he missed the 2016 NFL season.

In 2017, Bridgwater Jr. was hopeful to return back in action and continue to chase his stats. But unfortunately, his wish didn’t come true due to his injury just yet. When Week 15 came around, he entered the game against the Cincinnati Bengals and received a standing ovation as the Vikings went on to win that game, 34-7.

In 2018, the most unexpected thing happened for Bridgewater Jr. He was considered a free agent as the Minnesota Vikings decided not to exercise their fifth-year option and he landed to the New York Jets signing a one-year contract with a $500,000 signing bonus.

Rick and the group begin planning their trek from Hilltop to the location Dwight gave them on the map… without knowing a Savior ambush is waiting for them. Morgan is slowly losing his mind, per usual lately, barely able to recognize the people around him as friend or foe. He tells Rick, “We are worse than we were.” What this war is costing these two old friends, losing everything good, everything that felt safe, Morgan implores Rick to just finish this… because for people like them, there’s no going back.

Biting The Bullet?

The Saviors are gearing up as well, and Dwight is, um, relegated to wear the disgusting “A” oversize sweatshirt to symbolize his new rank at the bottom of the totem pole. Eugene and Negan are bonding over bullets like frat boys at a kegger. Negan also brings our distraught priest Father Gabe along to hear his “confession” of what he’s about to do in an extremely condesending tone. Right after, he casually tosses Father Gabriel out the car. As if we expect anything less from Negan, especially in the season finale.

After Rick, Morgan, Michonne and some other key players begin making their way along the map, they quickly realize it’s a trap. Ezekiel and his group finds remnants of another map along the quarry. This clearly indicates their information was flawed from jump. Rick radio’s to Maggie she was right, it was a trap, and they’re changing the plan. For the first time in a long time the group is using caution. Maybe this can buy a few lives in the future if they keep it up.

Holding Down The Fort

With poor partial blind Father Gabriel running for his life after a not-so-joy-ride, Eugene finds him and holds him at gun point. Negan winds up Lucille and orders Eugene to throw him back in the car, indicating that he has no intention of allowing the priest to die a pleasant death. Super!

While Rick and the main group wanders into new territory as they go “off-map”, a group of Savior’s make their way to Hilltop to carry out the kill them all plan. Negan radio’s Rick to let him know there is no place for them to run, once again he has his people surrounded. Also, his mole Dwight has been discovered and Father Gabriel has been his hostage and is going to be the first casualty of the night. A slow countdown begins…

Literal Backfire

As Negan counts down, the Saviors begin to move in fully armed, when the guns go off – BACKFIRE!!! The prized bullet maker Eugene must have let Gabriel make a lot more defective ammo than he let on.  Rick and everyone moves in and takes advantage of YET ANOTHER BETRAYAL by one of Negan’s right hand guys. Rosita sees what Eugene had done for them.

In a blaze of glory, the approaching Saviors at Hilltop are fire bombed by the women of Oceanside, led by Aaron. The Saviors in the field get on their knees and surrender but none of our people look thrilled to have more POW’s. The look on Maggie’s face says it all: she wants it over.

A fleeing Negan is pursued by a vengeful Rick. The cat and mouse story of the season. The two, beating the crap out of each other, Negan confesses to Rick that back when he killed Glenn and Abraham it was never a random choosing, he didn’t want to kill Rick then because he had a son. That no longer matters now for Negan. Rick tries to calm Negan down, apparently the word “Carl” is his Kryptonite, and in a split second of hearing Rick out that Carl wouldn’t want this anymore… Rick cuts Negan’s throat.

Something After

Rick turns to see his people and says to Siddiq, the only living doctor in the apocalypse, to save Negan. Michonne is holding back a screaming Maggie, pleading to let him die for taking Glenn’s life, but Rick says that can’t be what we are. In a final attempt to honor his son’s wishes, he tells both his and Negans’ people that from this point on, it’s not about what was, it’s about a future.

The less evil Saviors ask Maggie to stay at Hilltop and help to which she agrees while the other Saviors go back to The Sanctuary with Tara and Rosita and try to work to built it back up into a real sanctuary not built on fear, but built through trust and hard work of others.

Daryl rides out with Dwight into the woods. Dwight tells Daryl he knows he has to pay for his past mistakes and he’s ready to die if that’s how it has to be. Daryl throws him a set of car keys and tells him to get lost if he wants to make it right. Find his wife and start over. Dwight drives back to his and Sherry’s old house, hoping to find her there. He finds a note instead with an infinity sign (something I’m sure we’ll learn more about next season) and he smiles knowing she’s still out there.

Morgan gives his gear to Carol in an ominous departure tells her he’s going where he needs to be: away. Surprisingly, Morgan ends up at Jadis’s heap-ster community and invites her to join Rick and tells her that she shouldn’t be alone now that the war is over. She tells him her name is Anne, and says she’ll go with him. Much to her dismay, Morgan says he can’t go back.

If this wasn’t a lot to process, Maggie, Jesus, and Daryl decide to plan a coup of their own to bide their time and take down Negan without Rick and Michonne. Looks like the new war next season will be coming from inside the group… for now.

Run, Morgan, Run!

We open the new season with a flash-forward of Morgan stumbling upon a man named John, a loner with a gun out in the woods. Back to present time, Morgan has currently taken up residence in the vacant heap-ster community (assuming Jadis/Anne has joined Rick), having the occasional surprise visitor: Jesus, Carol, and Rick who implore him to return to the group of people he fought to protect. Rick tells him, “You can hide, but you can’t run.” I’m gonna go out on a limb here and says he makes a run for it.

After a significant amount of running, we catch up where we began in the woods where Morgan meets John. John Dorie is about as alone as a man can be, talking into nothing but air. There’s a certain parallel of caution to when people encountered Morgan on his own back in The Walking Dead. John offers his truck to Morgan to spend the night in, an offer I’d think Morgan regrets not taking as he walks away, he almost immediately gets knocked in the head by another new friend.

I Like New People

John comes right to the rescue of these men who’ve captured Morgan in their camp. While the guys try to shake down Morgan and John for what they have, a woman named Althea rolls up in a big truck with some big guns to scoop up the two strays. She didn’t do it out of the goodness of her heart though, she needs something from them just like everyone else does in this world. People are the new commodity and she’s documenting the stories of those she meets along her way. John just wants to get back to his truck and Morgan wants to get the hell away from everyone.

Althea hears John’s story about how he badly wants to reconnect with the woman he loves. He’s a sweet simple guy just looking for a break it seems. Morgan is not as pleasant and the last thing he feels like doing is spilling his heart out to a stranger. Before any of the three get to part ways, the grungy men from the camp that took Morgan are back. I don’t know how far Morgan ran or what state this is, but when I find out I’m making a note never to visit.

Anyone who knows Morgan Jones knows better than to try to take away his stick. These dudes messed with the wrong lunatic! John frees some walkers to distract them while Althea plays keep away with her armored truck keys. Morgan takes a bullet in the leg, but that doesn’t stop him from going full Spider-Man roof hopping to take out the shooter above them. The trio inadvertently save each others lives.

This is enough for Morgan to open up a bit and allow Althea to record his story. He tells her about how he went from Atlanta to Virginia and the settlements were safe places… until a war broke out. Despite them winning, it wasn’t enough for him to physically stay, his mind was already gone. Althea asks him to tell her one real thing, Morgan grabs his gear and looks into her camera, “I lose people, and then I lose myself.” They don’t stop him from leaving this time.

A wounded Morgan is cornered by walkers in the road when his new pal John comes to his rescue. The two guys head back to meet Althea, Morgan says only until his leg heals up. The trio seems to get along pretty well given what we know about stranger danger in this show. Then it all goes south. It seems their good hearted nature gets the better of them when they see someone in the road and agree the intention is not to harm, but decide to check and see. Surprise, it’s the Clark family!

Ronald “R.” Lee Ermey, a Golden Globe-nominated actor best known for his role as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, has passed away at the age of 74.

What happened?

The news was announced on Twitter by the actor’s manager, Bill Rogin, who wrote the following statement:

“It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey (‘The Gunny’) passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia. He will be greatly missed by all of us. Semper Fi, Gunny. Godspeed.”

Rogin expanded on what had happened on Ermey’s Facebook page:

“He will be greatly missed by all of us. It is a terrible loss that nobody was prepared for. He has meant so much to so many people. And, it is extremely difficult to truly quantify all of the great things this man has selflessly done for, and on behalf of, our many men and women in uniform. He has also contributed many iconic and indelible characters on film that will live on forever. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman of ‘Full Metal Jacket’ fame was a hard and principled man. The real R. Lee Ermey was a family man, and a kind and gentle soul. He was generous to everyone around him. And, he especially cared deeply for others in need.”

“There are many Gunny’s, but this one was OURS. And, we will honor his memory with hope and kindness. Please support your men and women in uniform. That’s what he wanted most of all.”

A native of Kansas, Ermey joined the military, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps, before ultimately becoming an actor. Throughout his career, he appeared in films, television, video games and even commercials.

According to Rogin’s earlier statement on Twitter, Ermey’s passing is believed to be related to pneumonia complications, although it is unknown if an official autopsy had confirmed this. He was 74 at the time of his death.

R. Lee Ermey, a former Marine who had a star turn in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket has died at the age of 74-years-old. According to Bill Rogin, Ermey’s longtime manager, R. Lee died on the morning of Sunday, April 15 from pneumonia-related complications. For his roll in Full Metal Jacket, Ermey earned a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. A Kansas native, Ermey enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1961 at age 17.

Before becoming an actor, Ermey was a former United States Marine Corps staff sergeant and an honorary gunnery sergeant. During his tenure in the U.S. Marine Corps, Ermey also served as a drill instructor. Ermey served 11 years in the Marine Corps and spent 14 months in Vietnam and then in Okinawa, Japan.

In addition to his star turn in Full Metal Jacket, Ermey appeared as  Mayor Tilman in the film Mississippi Burning, Bill Bowerman in Prefontaine, Sheriff Hoyt in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, Jimmy Lee Farnsworth in Fletch Lives, a police captain in Se7en, plastic army men leader Sarge in the Toy Story films, Lt. “Tice” Ryan in Rocket Power, the warden in SpongeBob SquarePants, and John House in House.

For his work in the Marines, Ermey was retroactively awarded the Marine Corps Drill Instructor Ribbon after he retired from the military due to his prior service as a Marine Corps recruit training instructor.

Ermey married his wife, Nila, in 1975. The coule had four children together. Ermey died at a hospital in Santa Monica, California from complications related to pneumonia on the morning of April 15, 2018. He was 74 years old.

Alycia Jasmin Debnam-Carey is an Australian actress, best known for her roles as Commander Lexa on The CW science fiction television series The 100 and Alicia Clark on the AMC horror-drama television series Fear the Walking Dead. She grew up in Sydney, and graduated from Newtown High School of the Performing Arts in 2011 where she was a percussionist.

Joao Souza, a 19-year-old freshman engineering student at Binghamton University, has died after being stabbed on campus on the night of Sunday, April 15. Binghamton University’s website says that the suspect fled after the stabbing and currently remains at large. The university announced Souza’s death on Monday, April 16.

According to reports, the stabbing happened in Windham Hall on Binghamton’s campus around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 15. Police said the suspect fled on foot and is described as a “light skinned male wearing dark pants and a dark hoodie.” In a statement, BU spokesman Ryan Yarosh said that the stabbing does not appear to be a random act.

At this time, investigators from multiple agencies are interviewing people and searching areas of the campus around Windham Hall. Classes were canceled for the day at BU on Monday, April 16, as a result of the tragedy.

As he walked outside the Couper Administration Building Monday morning, 21-year-old Conrad Taylor, a December 2017 graduate of BU who also serves on Binghamton City Council, described this tragedy is heartbreaking — a disgusting crime.

“As someone who was a student until a few months ago, and someone who is still a part of the BU community, it’s tough to hear about something like this happening on campus,” Taylor said. “We’re an incredible community here at Binghamton, but we’ve faced tragedy and hardship before in different ways, and we’ve stuck together and stood by each other. I’m absolutely sure we’ll do that again.”

Investigators have not disclosed circumstances surrounding Sunday’s stabbing, which marks the second homicide involving a BU student this year and the fourth homicide to occur in Broome County for 2018. Haley Anderson, 22, was killed at an Oak Street residence in Binghamton in March. In Dec. 2009, Richard T. Antoun, an emeritus professor of anthropology, was stabbed to death on campus by a graduate student.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the stabbing or the suspect’s whereabouts to contact Binghamton University Police at 607-777-2393. Furthermore, the school is offering counseling services. BU officials said that if students would like to speak to someone, they should reach out to the Dean of Students Office and CARE Team by calling 607-777-2804.

Hall of Fame guard Hal Greer, known for playing with the Philadelphia Sixers team that won the 1966-67 NBA championship, has passed away at the age of 81. Although his time of death was believed to be this past Saturday, his passing was not officially announced until the following Monday.

What happened?

On Twitter, the Philadelphia 76ers issued the following statement announcing Greer’s passing:

“The 76ers mourn the passing of Hal Greer, an NBA champion, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and team legend.”

According to NBA, the team also issued the following statements during a press release:

“Greer was the first player to have his number retired by the 76ers organization when the team retired his No. 15 in 1976. To further celebrate his place in team history, Greer also became the first player to be honored with a sculpture on 76ers Legends Walk at the Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex in 2017.”

“In addition to his historic contributions on the court, Greer will forever be remembered as a true gentleman who used the tremendous platform of basketball to uplift and inspire others.”

“We extend our deepest condolences and send our love to the Greer family during this difficult time.”

“The 76ers will celebrate Greer’s life and legacy at tonight’s game in South Philadelphia.”

According to ESPN, he was a ten-time All-Star who played with the Sixers for his whole 15-year career, who drafted him with the 13th pick of the 1958 draft. During their 1966-67 title run, Greer averaged 27.7 points over 15 playoff games, helping the team beat their longtime rival, the Boston Celtics. Ultimately, Greer earned over 20,000 points in his career and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982.

USA Today mentioned that Greer passed away after a “brief illness,” but did not expand further than that, adding that he died on Saturday night in Arizona. At this time, however, it is unknown if an official autopsy has clarified his official cause of death. As mentioned, he was 81-years-old at the time of his death.

It is Marathon Monday, with the 122nd running of the Boston Marathon currently underway. The race can be seen on NBC Sports and local CBS affiliates. The race officially kicked off at 8:30 a.m. ET before the Elite Women’s group, led by last year’s winner Edna Kiplagat of Kenya, began their run at 9:32 a.m. ET. The Elite Men’s group kicked off at 10:00 a.m. ET.

Every year, the race attracts more than 500,000 spectators, with many of the world’s elite runners making their way through the course.

This year, the weather is an issue with a downpour impacting the Boston area, but that didn’t stop the athletes from lacing up their shoes and competing.

If you are inside staying warm, you can still enjoy the race by checking out a number of live streaming options.

As a proud New Yorker and New Jerseyan, viewing Boston as a bitter rival is essentially in my blood. Whether it be Yankees-Sox, Mets-Sox (hello, 1986), Jets-Patriots (f*ck you, Bill Belichick),  or Giants-Patriots (hello, 2007 & 2011), family, friends and loved ones of mine have loathed Boston, their teams, and their fans for the entirety of my life.

However, outside of their annoyingly successful sports teams, everything I’ve ever heard about Boston has been overwhelmingly positive. Whether it be about the food, the community, the Marathon, Fenway Park– everything I’ve ever heard about Boston, whether it be from residents or tourist — has been nothing short of spectacular. So when the nice folks over at Gillette offered me a chance to fly up for a couple days to see the city and take in a Yankees vs Red Sox game at Fenway, I jumped at the opportunity.

Now, it’s important to remember that I was only in Boston for about 30 hours and the weather wasn’t all that friendly for the time of year. Were there other areas of the city that I never saw that likely represent the more authentic side of Bean Town? Absolutely. But we’re here to talk about Boston and the first things I noticed about the historic city from an outsider’s point-of-view.

So, with that in mind, these are the five things this New Yorker learned about Boston while visiting for the first time.

Are cities allowed to be this clean?

The first thing I noticed upon touching down in Boston was how damn clean the city is.

Growing up in New Jersey and New York City, cleanliness is not necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when talking about those areas. Maybe this is the fault of New York City itself (which, according to my parents, has radically cleaned itself up over the last 30 years but is still a shithole nonetheless) but I half expect all cities to have a certain level of filth built in.

But, nope, not Boston. There was no pervasive smell of shit, no garbage bags lining the streets, no construction sites every other block — the city looks like it gets a nightly cleaning by every fraternity pledge in the city.

Zombie apocalypse-levels of quiet

Once I arrived at my hotel (the Boston Park Plaza, it was gorgeous, so shout out to them & Gillette), I had a couple of hours to kill before we headed to Fenway, so I decided to stroll around the area for a bit to find somewhere to grab a bite. After I wrapped my head around the notion that cities could, in fact, be clean, I noticed how quiet it was … almost too quiet.

No bicycle bells warning clueless pedestrians, no impatient cab drivers honking at the car in front of them, no crackheads arguing on the corner: I felt like I was walking through a city that had been wiped out by a zombie infection — that’s how quiet it was.

Fenway Park, on the other hand, was a different story.

Everyone doesn’t sound like Ben Affleck in The Town.

This one surprised me the most, as I expected everyone to sound like Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting and Ben Affleck in The Town. Now, while I was mostly at Fenway Park and the business area of Boston (meaning there were likely mostly tourists around me), the lack of Boston accents I encountered was wildly disappointing, to say the least. However, maybe that’s on me for expecting Boston to be like Ben Affleck’s movie version of it.

The only true Boston accent I encountered on my travels was at lunch before we left for the airport. We went to Atlantic Fish Company on Boylston Street and our waiter was like a supporting character ripped out of The Departed. Hearing him offer us their famous “Clam Chowduuh” in that patented Boston accent made the entire trip worthwhile.

The hype about their Lobster Roll is real AF

Speaking of Atlantic Fish Company, I had a Lobster Roll for lunch, and, well, sheeeeesh. I’m getting the itis just thinking about it. Really, the seafood, in general, was the best I ever had: calamari, oysters, shrimp, lobster — something about their seafood is just a cut above New York City’s. Then again, I’m no seafood expert and was prettttyyy baked on my pre-flight brownie when we went out to lunch, so take kindly take my culinary analysis with a grain of salt.

It’s easy to see why people are so proud of being from Bostom

All this said, I absolutely loved Boston. Despite the unseasonably cool weather that was sweeping the Northeast at the time of my visit, I could immediately tell why people loved the city so much. The streets are clean, the air is fresh, the seafood is excellent, but most importantly, the world-famous sense of togetherness and community was clear.

As a guy who is wildly proud of being from New York City, I respect the hell out of how much Bostonians love being from Boston and I can’t wait to go back because of it.

Despite having to contend with wind and rain impacting the area, Desiree Linden became the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon since 1985. Ultimately finishing 26 miles in New England, her time is currently set at around 2:39:53, beating Ethiopian runner Mamitu Daska and Kenyan runner Gladys Chesir. Despite just making this milestone, she already had four previous Top 10 finishes in the Maraton, as well as just missing the top place by two seconds in 2011.

What happened?

On Twitter, Sports Illustrated writer Chris Chavez proclaimed Linden’s win by announcing “Drought Over,” possibly a play both on the weather impacting the area at the time and Linden’s milestone win, as well as announcing Linden’s time:

“Desiree Linden becomes the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon in 33 years. Takes the victory in 2:39:54”

According to WMUR, other notable winners include Yuki Kawauchi of Japan, who won the men’s race, and Russian-born Tatyana McFadden from Maryland, who won the women’s wheelchair race, also winning this year’s women’s wheelchair race at the Chicago Marathon.

Who is Desiree Linden?

A native of California, Linden, who is also known by the aliases “Des” and “Desi,” has been a runner since high school where she ran track and cross country, later going on to Arizona State University, where she was a two-time All-American in track and cross country, as well as a psychology major. According to her official bio from the school, where she was identified by her maiden name, Desiree Nicole Davila, she earned her first All-America honors in 2003.

While she only recently became the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon since 1985, she is hardly a novice when it comes to running. According to Yahoo Sports, she previously had four Top 10 finishes in the Marathon; in 2011, she had also come close to winning the Boston Marathon, only losing by two seconds.
