Nick Mangold Net Worth 2018: How Much Money Is Nick Worth

$

Nick Mangold is a former American football player, who for eleven seasons anchored the Jets’ offensive line as its center. He essentially served as the line’s quarterback, calling out blitzes and defensive schemes and proved his mettle time and time again.

Not only was he a great football player, but he was an all-around great guy. With that, let’s take a look at his career, beginning with his net worth.

Nick Mangold Net Worth 2018: $26 Million

Between his contracts and endorsements, Mangold has earned a sizable amount over the course of his NFL career. At one point, he was actually the highest paid center in the league. Let’s go back and see how he got here.

Early Years

Instagram Photo

Nick Mangold was born on January 13th, 1984, in Centerville, Ohio. He attended Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering, Ohio, where he was a varsity member of the football, wrestling, and track & field teams. Despite his obvious skills as an athlete, he wasn’t scouted by many college programs but did play in the 2002 US Army All-American Bowl.

He went on to attend Ohio State University, starting three years as the Buckeyes’ center. Following an injury to Ohio State’s starting center in his rookie season, Mangold stepped in to play in his place and never gave the role back. He went on to log over 300 minutes of game time, a sure sign of his durability as an offensive lineman.

Going into the 2006 NFL draft, he was widely regarded as the best center available. He was selected in the first round (26th overall) by the New York Jets, who had also used the fourth overall pick in the draft to select Mangold’s longtime partner on the offensive line D’Brickashaw Ferguson.

2006-2010

Instagram Photo

As a rookie, Mangold knew he had an enormous task ahead of him. He would be replacing the legendary Kevin Mawae at center and he certainly had big shoes to fill. Luckily, he was more than up to the task. He would have a very solid rookie campaign, allowing only 0.5 sacks, committing just three penalties, and called all the line plays from the center. He even garnered some possible Rookie of the Year nomination talk, which is very rare for a lineman. Through his first four seasons, Mangold started every single game, a sign of his durability in a position that’s widely regarded as one of the most dangerous in football.

He helped make the Jets make the AFC Championship in back to back seasons, although the Jets would ultimately go on to lose both those games.

2011-Present

Instagram Photo

Going into the 2011 season, Mangold was a league veteran, considered one of the best at his position. He had made the Pro Bowl in the 2008 and 2009 seasons. In August 2010, Mangold signed a contract extension of seven years for $55 Million, with $22.5 million of that guaranteed.

In week 2 of the 2011 season, Mangold suffered the first injury that caused him to miss games. He left a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with an apparent ankle injury and would miss two games, but would return for week 5. He would start every subsequent game and would be named to another Pro Bowl.

2012 would see the end of Mangold’s Pro Bowl streak, despite him starting every game. However, he would bounce back in 2013, getting named to that year’s Pro Bowl. Mangold would continue this in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, totaling a number of seven Pro Bowl appearances.

Following 2015, Mangold would begin to experience the wear and tear that comes with playing on the Offensive line. He missed much of the 2016 season with an ankle injury and a week 13 game against the Indianapolis Colts would be his last time suiting up in an NFL uniform.

In February 2017, Mangold was released by the Jets as a result of the Jets wanting to offload major contracts in a rebuilding year, and despite his skill set could not find another team to sign with. After a season without a team, Mangold decided to hang up his cleats in April of 2018.

Michael M. Roque, 20, a Binghamton University student, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the death of Joao Souza, 19, an engineering student at the university.

Roque was being held late Monday night, April 16, at the Broome County jail. He has been assigned a public defender and pled not guilty to the charges.

via Newsday

“We absolutely believe this is not a random act,” Broome County District Attorney Stephen Cornwell Jr. told reporters after Roque’s arrest.

Souza was attacked about 10:30 p.m. Sunday inside the Windham Hall residence hall, authorities said.

Police took Roque into custody after university officials on Monday released surveillance photos of the suspect, his head covered by a hoodie. A university tweet asked people to be on the lookout for a male in a dark Puma hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.

Monday night, Binghamton University’s police chief tweeted that a suspect was in custody.

“There is no active threat to the campus, but we will maintain additional police patrols tonight,” the tweet said. “Thank you to everyone who provided tips and info.”

Souza was from Brazil, university officials told reporters at a Monday news conference.

“I am deeply saddened to write to you regarding last night’s stabbing that led to the death of one of our students, Joao Souza,” Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger said. “The entire campus mourns for him. Our sympathies go out to his friends and family, as well as to his classmates and peers.”

The fatal stabbing comes just over a month after the killing of a nursing student from Long Island, Haley Anderson, 22.

Anderson was strangled on March 9 in the off-campus apartment of another fellow student she had briefly dated. Orlando E. Tercero, 22, was charged in her death, and fled to his native Nicaragua where he is currently being detained. U.S. authorities are working to bring him back to New York to stand trial.

Say hello to Anna Congdon, the girlfriend on this year’s NFL draft’s number one running back Saquon Barkley. Congdon is a Penn State student who is studying nursing according to the school’s directory. Barkley has been scoring since he has arrived at Penn State and it clearly isn’t just on the football field.

The former Penn Star star is not the only one turning heads on the Nittany Lions Campus.

Instagram Photo

Barkley and Congdon have been dating for over a year and announced in March they are expecting their first child together. The announcement was delayed nearly eight months as Congdon and Barkley are expecting the birth of their child in April.

Instagram Photo

Guess what else is happening in April? The NFL draft. What a crazy scenario this could turn into if the child arrives on the same day Barkley gets selected in the draft. Either way, the month of April will be a life-changing moment for the couple.

Barkley is ranked as the number one running back on almost every team’s draft board. Mock drafts place in the top-5 with some having him selected as high as the first overall pick. Barkley finished his Penn State career with 3,843 rushing yards and 53 total touchdowns. He scored nearly every way possible at PSU rushing, receiving, passing, returning, and Anna Congdon. There is a very short list of players who succeed more in college.

Whetzel was being held in the Beaufort County jail pending a bond hearing.

The Island Packet reported that Whetzel was placed on administrative leave last week, according to an emailed statement by district spokesman Jim Foster. The email did not specify what day her leave began or whether it was paid or unpaid, The Island Packet reported.

Best NBA Playoff Moments From April 16: Wade, Klay, And Popovich

$

In case you missed it, we’re three days deep into the 2018 NBA Playoffs–so if you’ve been rolling in Coachella dust or are just waking up from a coma, pay attention. Over eight Game 1s, we were treated to appetizers like the Phantom of the Process, Playoff P, and the LeBron/Lance rematch we were hardly prepared for. On Monday, April 16, we moved on to the first of our Round 1, Game 2 matchups: 76ers/Heat followed by Warriors/Spurs. Here are the most important takeaways.

Father Prime: Don’t Call It a Comeback

Instagram Photo

After the Miami Heat were blown out of the Wells Fargo Center in Game 1, it felt like a short series was imminent. The flourishing, streaking 76ers–even without Joel Embiid–looked like just too much for a floundering Heat defense to manage. But we and the Sixers may have forgotten about a guy called Dwyane Wade. After going for 11 points in the deflating 130-103 loss two days earlier, Flash came back with a dominant 28-point performance, stunning Philadelphia, and reminding us that he isn’t quite finished.

Unless it’s a Wade Wine, don’t call it vintage. Yes, he’s a sixth man. Yes, he’s 36 years old. Yes, he’s publicly contemplating retirement. But this is the Playoffs, and three-time champion Dwyane Wade knows how to lift up a struggling team. Wade, who averages 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1 block over 174 career playoff games, came up clutch for his Heat–but not before rewriting the record books.

In the latter part of a first half in which he alone outscored the 76ers, Wade hurdled Larry Bird on the all-time playoff scoring list. With his 16th point of the night, Wade earned 10th place–and just kept it moving. He had work to do. Philadelphia surged in the fourth, cutting Miami’s lead to two; with just over four minutes to play, Father Prime reentered the game and made an immediate impact.

Instagram Photo

First, a timely steal leading to his own fast-break dunk. One possession later, an assist to a cutting James Johnson, extending a two-possession lead. Wade immediately set the tone for the Heat defense: Kelly Olynyk blocked an easy Ben Simmons layup, keeping the Sixers frozen at 96 points. One play later, Wade secures a mammoth offensive rebound which leads to a Goran Dragic jump shot, putting the Heat up eight and pressuring the Sixers to call timeout.

Instagram Photo

With less than a minute to go, Flash took Simmons to school. If you watched him run the iso live, you knew in your hardest of hearts that it was going in. Dwyane Wade iced a Game 2 win for South Florida like it was 2006, and saved a series with a destination of disappointment. Don’t call it classic. And don’t you dare try to give any credit to Kevin Hart.

Klay Thompson Lighting Up the Spurs

Instagram Photo

It almost looked like the Spurs would pull one out at Oracle Arena and even the series. Almost. Without Steph Curry, the Warriors appeared more than vulnerable heading into the Playoffs; behind their worst loss of the Steve Kerr era and a 7-10 record over the final 17, some felt ready to write them off completely. What a waste of energy. The Dubs, including their three non-Curry All-Stars and a resurrected Andre Iguodala, are alive and kicking. They earned a 21-point win in Game 1, and while they may have looked shaky in the first half of Game 2, they sorted themselves out.

Notorious for their volcanic third quarters, Golden State predictably outscored San Antonio by 11 in the third after trailing by six at halftime. By the beginning of the fourth, Kevin Durant was up to 28 points, and Klay Thompson just 15.

When Klay gets hot, make way. He literally could not miss in the final 12. Spurred by a couple of clear path free throws courtesy of Bryn Forbes, Klay watched the ball go through the basket and never looked back. Fed by Shaun Livingston, David West, Andre Iguodala, and Durant, he’d go off for 16 fourth-quarter points on perfect 6/6 shooting. Oracle was on fire, and the Spurs had to sit and watch as their season started to slip away. The Warriors stole back Game 2 with a 15-point win, and head into Texas with a champion’s confidence.

Gregg Popovich Not Very Subtly Calling Out Kawhi Leonard

Instagram Photo

This is far from a great moment if you’re a Spurs admirer, but it’s a moment nonetheless, and a big one at that. In response to reports all but confirming Kawhi Leonard’s permanent absence from the 2018 Playoffs, the NBA universe is preparing for the previously preposterous: Kawhi Leonard is leaving San Antonio. Leonard, an unconventionally quiet superstar and saving grace of the aging Spurs dynasty, has flipped one of the oldest unwritten basketball laws on its head by waging a Cold War on the NBA’s model franchise. Citing concerns over a lingering quad injury, Leonard has departed from his team despite long being cleared by the Spurs to play.

When asked about LaMarcus Aldridge’s performance against the Warriors on Monday night, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich didn’t hold back on his compliments despite going down 0-2 in the series. Aldridge, elected an All-Star this year behind his best production in three years as a Spur, reconciled with Popovich prior to the 2017-18 season after requesting a trade out of San Antonio. Aldridge, Popovich, and the Spurs have adjusted their system around each other. Without Leonard, Aldridge has been allotted that much more freedom.

Popovich told reporters, “LaMarcus has been a monster all year long. He’s led our team at both ends of the floor. He doesn’t complain about a darn thing out on the court. He just plays through everything. I can’t imagine being more proud of a player, as far as playing through adversity and being there for his teammates, night after night after night. He’s been fantastic.”

These comments are less curious than they are blatant. Popovich’s pointed emphasis on LaMarcus’s two-way play–Leonard has long been lauded the “best two-way player” the NBA has to offer–and his aversion to complaining through adversity are no accident. Popovich is clearly drawing a contrast between Aldridge’s dependability and Leonard’s bizarre absence complicated by his apparent distrust of the Spurs’ medical team (if not the entire organization). After reports that the Clippers are building a trade package for Leonard, and Popovich’s dismissive, repetitive references to “Kawhi and his group” when prodded, there is undeniable tension.

Leonard, conspicuously, did not travel with the Spurs to Oakland for their first-round playoff series. Whether or not Leonard is physically capable or comfortable engaging in basketball play remains irrelevant: he isn’t even present to sit on the sideline in support of his teammates, who have worked arduously without him to simply secure a playoff seed. Leonard is allegedly in New York, working with a secondary team of physicians. Is it a self-imposed exile? Or has he lost the patience, trust, and support of the Spurs organization?

His salary/bonuses numbers at $26.6 million, while his endorsements are a whopping $20 million.

8. Stephen Curry: $47.3 Million

Stephen Curry, the second most-known basketball player on the planet, sits as the third highest-paid player in basketball, right behind Warriors teammate, Kevin Durant. Curry, 30,  is a two-time NBA Champion and five-time NBA All-Star. The superstar is the face of the Under Armor brand. Curry makes only a low $12.3 in salary/bonuses but is given an astounding $35 million in endorsements.

6. Andrew Luck and Rory McIlroy: $50 Million

As you can tell, there’s no number seven highest-paid athlete. So we have a tie for number six. Andrew Luck, the quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts and three-time Pro Bowler, makes the most the third-most of any player in the National Football League. Luck sits on a mountain of riches being paid 47 million dollars. Crazy to believe, he only makes $3 million for his off the field ventures.

For Rory McIlroy, he’s one of the most popular golfers on the planet. The Hollywood, Northern Ireland native turned professional in 2007 and won the 2011 U.S. Open,  the PGA Championship in both 2012 and 2014, and The Masters in 2015. McIlroy has totaled $16 million in prize money and gets a large $34 million in endorsements from Nike and TaylorMade.

5. Kevin Durant: $60.6 Million

Next to Lebron James, Kevin Durant sits right behind him for making the most money for any player in the NBA. Durant — who won’t hit 30 for another month — has one ring with the Golden State Warriors that he won in 2017 and is a nine-time NBA All-Star. He’s been in the league for almost a decade and is right up there in the top three players in the sport. Durant is represented by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Group and his salary is $26.6 million. His endorsements with Nike, Sprint, Gatorade, Panini, General Electric, and 2K Sports add up to 34 million dollars.

4. Roger Federer: $64 Million

The Swiss megastar is referred to by many, as the greatest tennis player of all time. Federer’s now 20-year career has been filled with 20 Grand Slam titles, including eight Wimbledon wins and five U.S. Open championships. The 36-year old continues to reign supreme in the sport (#2 in men’s singles tennis by the ATP)  and surprisingly only won $6 million in prize money. But when it comes to endorsements, Federer is king. His deals with Nike, Rolex, Credit Suisse, Jura and Wilson, and Barilla pay him a ridiculous $58 million.

3. Lionel Messi: $90 Million

(Getty Images)

Regarded as not only one of the two best soccer players not only on the planet but in the sport’s history, Lionel Messi perfectly sits in the top-three of the highest-paid athletes. Messi, has been the face of FC Barcelona for nearly 14 years, and has led them to eight La Liga titles, five Copa Del Ray wins, and four UEFA Champions League titles. The 30-year old has also been awarded the FIFA Ballon d’Or award for the best footballer in the world five times. Messi is the second-most paid soccer player, having a scorching $53 million in the bank. Endorsement-wise, Huawei Technologies, Gatorade, Adidas, and Tata Motors total $27 million for the international superstar.

2. Lebron James: $86.2 Million

Perhaps the most recognizable athlete on the face of the earth, and greatest basketball player of his generation, Lebron James is a money-making machine. Since coming into the league 15 years ago, King James’s value has continued to grow and grow as each day passes. James, 33, has won three NBA titles, is a four-time MVP, and unreal 14-time NBA All-Star. He is the highest-paid player in basketball, crushing it at 31.2 million dollars. LeBron is the most endorsed athlete in the world. At $55 million, he represents Kia, McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Samsung, Beats by Dre, Tencent, and Nike just to name a few.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo: $93 Million

(Getty Images)

A soccer legend, and universal icon, 33-year old Cristiano Ronaldo profits as the most paid athlete in the world. Ronaldo, the Real Madrid star and face of Portuguese futbol, has been at the forefront of the game since 2003 when he got his start with Manchester United. His accolades include five Ballon d’Or awards, a huge amount of trophies winning with his clubs. Basically, there’s just too many to count. His $58 million ranks him as the top paid player in any sport. On the endorsement side of things, he comes in at a substantial $35 million from deals with Tag Heuer, Abbott Laboratories, Herbalife, and of course, Nike.

Jack Sawyer, Bail Hearing

Shutterstock

A Vermont teen accused of planning a school shooting that ultimately impacted the state’s gun laws, Jack Sawyer, is due in court Tuesday afternoon and, according to a top public defender in the state, he might be released following a bail hearing.

What happened?

Sawyer had been held without bail after being arrested back in February on charges that included attempted aggravated murder after allegedly planning a shooting againstFair Haven Union High School.

Around a week ago, however, the Vermont Supreme Court ruled that his shooting plans did not reach the legal definition of an attempt, saying that “preparation alone” was not enough, ultimately sending the case back to the lower court for a bail hearing.

According to the Associated Press, attorney Marshall Pahl, who is representing Sawyer, who also believes that he might be released following the bail hearing, issued the following statement:

“The evidence in this case shows that the defendant had no plans to commit the target offense for at least a month at the time he was arrested.”

Vermont’s governor Phil Scott has called for a domestic terrorism law, wanting changes made before an April 23 deadline, after students attending Fair Haven Union High School return from vacation. That said, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee has said that it is unlikely for the law to be passed by that time. According to Vermont’s official state website, Scott has also issued the following statements over the case:

“Based on the evidence in the public record, it is clear the individual intended and still intends to carry out a horrific crime.”

“I’ve heard from the school’s superintendent as well as the Rutland County legislative delegation on the fear and frustration the community is feeling, and I share that frustration and concern.”

In addition, Scott signed a bill creating extreme risk protection orders last Wednesday, which will take effect this upcoming October, although the judge granted it in Sawyer’s case. Scott was reportedly inspired to toughen gun laws after reading a notebook titled “The Journal of an Active Shooter,” which Sawyer reportedly kept.

Who is Jack Sawyer?

Sawyer, who was 18 at the time of the incident, moved from Maine back to Poultney, Vermont, purchased a shotgun and ammunition in what was allegedly part of a plot to shoot his former high school, Fair Haven Union High School, planned to take place on March 14. That said, he had not visited the school or even visited the town where it was located after returning to Vermont.

Last week, a judge signed an extreme risk protection order to remove any guns from Sawyer’s home upon a release from bail.

Sawyer has pleaded not guilty as is currently being held without bail. If convicted of attempted aggravated murder, he would be automatically sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

UEFA Champions League Semi-Finals Predictions

Four teams remain in the UEFA Champions League. After a surprising defeat to Roma this past week, Barcelona is out, along with Manchester City. People are looking at Lionel Messi, and Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola after these top two teams were unexpectedly KO’d. A poor performance by the Argentinian forward appeared to throw off the rest of his teammates. Meanwhile, despite the 2-1 loss, Guardiola stands by his club stating that although they lost, they did not fail.

Liverpool vs. Roma

Instagram Photo

Now Liverpool is going head to head against Roma in the semi-finals while Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are set to duel it out. A Liverpool vs. Roma match hasn’t occurred since March 2002. Regardless of their impressive win over Barca, Roma still needs to worry about their overall shaky defense, especially when it comes to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah. It will be a weird encounter for Salah seeing as he joined Liverpool from Roma, so his former teammates are presumably well-acquainted with his skills. The two teams are more or less evenly matched, however, it’s predicted that Liverpool will walk away victorious.

Real Madrid vs. Bayern Munich

Instagram Photo

This is the game to watch. Whoever comes out on top between these two powerhouses will be the favorite to win the league. Bayern and Real have met many times on the field before, so the two are familiar. Robert Lewandowski of Bayern will without a doubt stir the pot in Real’s defensive area, seeing as he’s one of the best strikers in the sport.

Bayern is an excellent team with many high-quality players. Manuel Neuer may even make an appearance in the game after being out for a while due to an injury. That being said, Real is in terrific form right now and has key player Cristiano Ronaldo who scores goals like it’s no biggie. Bayern will undoubtedly put up a fight, but the win will most likely go to Real.

The final is, therefore, looking like it’s going to be Real against Liverpool. Historically, Real is the best team in this cup with 12 previous wins making Liverpool the designated underdogs of the match. The majority would expect Real to win, but hey, no one thought Roma was going to beat Barca and look what happened there.

The WWE Superstar Shake-up is already off to a great start. In day one of the Shakeup, major names switched brands from SmackDown Live to Monday Night Raw. Even one superstar from the NXT brand crossed over to the main roster. Former NXT Champion Drew McIntyre found a new home on Monday Night Raw.

WWE United States Champion Jinder Mahal also crossed over to the red brand, bringing his title with him. What’s In Store For Marvel After ‘Avengers: Infinity War’?

Avengers: Infinity War’s anticipation is at an all-time high as the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe will be facing its most significant threat to date in Thanos. Infinity War will change the Marvel landscape forever, but is leaving many fans wondering “what’s next?”

While we do not know how the movie will end, or what events will take place, Marvel has announced some films for after the release of Infinity War. Also, Disney is possibly buying 21st Century Fox which will give the rights of many of Marvel’s premiere characters such as the Fantastic Four and the X-Men. I will be going over movies that Marvel has confirmed as well as fan speculation about future movies as well.

Ant-Man and The Wasp

Instagram Photo

The first movie after Infinity War that Marvel is releasing is Ant-Man and The Wasp. The film will be a sequel to the original Ant-Man movie that was released in 2015. The question many fans have regarding the movie is where it will fit in the timeline. By the looks of the trailer, it is to take place before Infinity War but after Captain America: Civil War. The timing of the movie is strange because Marvel usually releases their films in a linear timeline. This movie will feature the much-anticipated character, The Wasp, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Wasp is a crucial character in the Marvel Comics, so fans will be elated to see her finally in a live action film. Hope van Dyne was teased to become the Wasp in the previous movie, but it looks like the character will finally come to the big screen. As the name suggests, this will be a movie about Scott Lang, the current Ant-Man, teaming up with Hope van Dyne, the new Wasp as they are sent on a mission to find secrets from their past. This movie will probably be self-contained and will not affect the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Captain Marvel

Instagram Photo

A new addition to the Marvel line up, Captain Marvel will be released in March of 2019, and it will follow the character of Carol Danvers. For those who do not know, Carol Danvers is a former Air Force Pilot who had been given the powers of a cosmic superhero named Captain Mar-vell. Not much is released from the actual movie, but many speculate that Captain Marvel will play a pivotal role in the second Infinity War film. What is known about this movie is that it will take place back in the 90’s. It was like the first Captain America movie where it takes us to a different decade in the installment on the franchise. The film will most likely cover a considerable amount of time and end in the modern time, possibly before the arrival of Thanos. Captain Marvel is a very beloved character within the Marvel Comics and fans are excited to see how shes portrayed on the big screen. Carol Danvers is a compelling character with super strength and energy projection powers and will most likely be fighting the Kree, the villains similar to those of the first Guardians of the Galaxy Movie.

Avengers: Infinity War Part 2

The second installment of the “Avengers vs. Thanos” storyline will be released in May of 2019. This movie will deal with the fallout of Avengers: Infinity War. This movie is shrouded in mystery as the real title of the movie is not even out.  The title probably has a spoiler in the title so for now; Marvel is branding it as Avengers: Infinity War Part 2. There is speculation that the plot of the movie will be about how Thanos acquired all of the Infinity Stones and is currently the strongest being in the Universe and the Avengers attempting to defeat him. The ending of this movie will be crucial to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How the Avengers subdue Thanos and if they tease a new future villain, much as they had done with Thanos is the first Avengers film.

Possible Future Films

Instagram Photo

While Marvel has announced movies for the future, some films are bound to happen because of how much of financial success the previous ones had as well as to carry the Marvel films for years to come. Marvel is sure to make a Spiderman, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther 2. These movies have done great in the box offices and there is a possibility that these three characters can be the faces of the Marvel franchise moving forward. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is another much-anticipated film that Marvel and coming off the heels of Infinity War 2, this movie would be a massive success. Disney is in the process of buying 21st Century Fox which like I said before, means Marvel will get the rights back to some of their most popular characters. The Fantastic Four and the X-Men are two properties that Marvel would love to have back in their hands. The X-Men could be a great franchise for Marvel to have in itself but and would fit perfectly into the post-Infinity War landscape. Fantastic Four has a longstanding history in Marvel, and with three movies that have been decimated by fans and critics, it only makes sense that Marvel takes their first family back and turns them into a staple in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Hampshire College Names Miriam E. Nelson New President

Hampshire College has just named health and nutrition scholar and social entrepreneur Miriam “Mim” E. Nelson as its seventh president, replacing Jonathan Lash, who announced his retirement last year.

What happened?

Last year, Lash announced that he would retire by June; Nelson will take on Lash position by July 1, 2018. Hampshire’s Board of Trustees made the appointment around a week ago; formal recommendation from a presidential search committee composed of faculty, students, staff and trustees helped give Nelson the edge over the competition for the position. Two other candidates were also interviewed, but the committee unanimously voted for Nelson, as confirmed by a memo from the school.

Ultimately, they were based on how they would hit on campus and their voice of leadership, as well as proven leadership with concern to leadership and strategy, among other atrributes.

According to MassLive, addressing her by the nickname “Mim,” search committee chairwoman Gaye Hill issued the following statement in tribute to Nelson’s appointment:

“We’re beyond excited to welcome Mim to Hampshire College.”

“She has a gift for empowering communities and the people who shape them. As a humanist and scientist, she has created original scholarly work that has brought meaningful change to the public sphere.”

Who is Miriam E. Nelson?

Nelson is someone who wears many hats. She’s been a best-selling author, a health and nutrition scholar, scientist, researcher, higher education administrator, government policy adviser, and university professor.

While she can now add “president” to her resume, she’s certainly had the impressive background, being the health and nutrition adviser to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Notably, Nelson even has led her expertise to documentaries. She worked as a senior adviser for Michael Pollan’s Emmy-nominated documentary In Defense of Food and chief scientific adviser to PBS NOVA’s Marathon Challenge film.

She had also been based at Tufts University for over three decades, where she had been credited with increasing research, management, and even earned tens of millions of dollars in resources from donors and funding agencies.

Knicks Coaching Woes: Who’s Up Next?

$

0

Here we go. On April 12, the New York Knicks announced that Jeff Hornacek had been relieved of coaching duties after two seasons of duty for the reliably turbulent franchise. Hornacek led the Knicks to a 30-104 overall record, unable to guide New York to a playoff berth in either year. With Kristaps Porzingis incapacitated indefinitely with an ACL tear, the Knicks face the 2018-19 season without their unicorn and without direction. Let’s take a look at who could be steering the Knicks next year:

Mark Jackson

True blue Knicks fans should be salivating at a chance to get Mark Jackson. He isn’t just one-third of your favorite (whether you like it or not) ABC broadcast trio–the Brooklyn native and St. John’s legend was drafted by the Knicks in 1987, and spent his first five years in the league as the point guard counterpart of a monstrous trio with beloved Knicks Patrick Ewing and Charles Oakley.

In 2011, Jackson was hired for his first NBA head coaching gig. He was stepping into the boots of a clunky Golden State Warriors team that had just missed the playoffs for a fourth consecutive year; Jackson aimed to systematically overhaul them into defense-minded playoff contenders. A young star named Stephen Curry was on the rise, and Klay Thompson and Draymond Green were drafted during Jackson’s tenure. By 2013, the Warriors were Western Conference threats. A year later, Jackson was out. Some credit Jackson with jumpstarting the Warriors dynasty by developing Curry, Thompson, and Green–to whichever degree it’s true, it’s worth taking a gamble on that winning energy.

David Fizdale

David Fizdale’s impressive résumé begins with the Miami Heat. On staff from 2008 until 2016, Fizdale was present through the Heatles era, winning two championships by way of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh. In his first season as an NBA head coach, Fizdale led the “Grit and Grind” Grizzlies to a 43-39 record, securing a Western Conference 6th seed and bullying the San Antonio Spurs through a tough first-round series. Not to mention, he stormed his way into our hearts with his classic “take that for data” rant.

When Fizdale was let go by the Memphis Grizzlies in November 2017, the move was met with incredulity. At the time, as Stephen A. Smith astutely noted, the franchise had “an absentee owner, a second-in-command who has no basketball background whatsoever, a roster that just isn’t that impressive and a general manager who may or may not be responsible for actually assembling it”–yet it was Fizdale who took the fall. Fewer than 20 games into the season, the Grizzlies–then five games below .500–had just lost centerpiece point guard Mike Conley to an Achilles injury. Grit and Grind icons Zach Randolph, Tony Allen, and Vince Carter had departed in free agency. The roster was in flux. Meanwhile, Marc Gasol allegedly could not find common ground with Fizdale, culminating in an “awkward” fourth-quarter benching of the All-Star center. That would be Fizdale’s last quarter in the Grind House. The aforementioned suspect front office sided with Gasol, much to the chagrin of the Fizdale supporters in Wade and James.

New York media is imploring Fizdale to clear up the Gasol situation if he expects to make it in the Big Apple. Citing Hornacek’s messy relationship with Joakim Noah, the Post notes that for Knicks President Steve Mills and GM Scott Perry, “connectivity with the locker room is high on the priority list”. Fizdale, a reputed, well-liked, no-nonsense, accomplished workhorse of a coach, has endorsements from LeBron James and the Golden State Warriors. What else do you need?

Jerry Stackhouse

He’s the youngest of the coaching prospects, but Stackhouse is no rookie. The 1995 #3 overall draft pick was an All-Star with the Detroit Pistons and an integral part of the Dallas Mavericks’ 2006 Finals run, but has experienced his greatest successes as a coach. In 2015, Stackhouse was hired to join the Toronto Raptors’ coaching staff, where he reached the Eastern Conference Finals alongside current Coach of the Year candidate Dwane Casey.

In September 2016, Stackhouse assumed head coaching duties for the Raptors’ Development League affiliate. The Raptors 905 clinched the best record out of 22 D-League teams, and in a 6-1 postseason effort, defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the Finals. With the 2017 D-League title in hand, Stackhouse was awarded D-League Coach of the Year. In 2018, Stackhouse again took the Raptors 905 to the G-League Finals, but fell to the Austin Spurs in a two-game sweep.

As of Monday, April 16, Stackhouse is in New York and is scheduled to interview with Mills and Perry this week. Stackhouse has proven himself more than capable of managing and developing young players, which should put an asterisk next to his name. Young Knicks Frank Ntilikina and Emmanuel Mudiay would benefit enormously from Stackhouse’s experience.

Mike Woodson

On April 15, it was reported that former Knicks head coach Mike Woodson would love to return to New York. Woodson took Mike D’Antoni’s spot in August 2011 and headed Carmelo Anthony‘s Knicks for three seasons. Telling the Post, “I’d like to finish what I started”, Woodson pointed out that his body of work speaks for itself and believes there should be mutual interest. Later that day, it was reported by ESPN that the Knicks had received permission to have talks with Woodson, who currently serves on Doc Rivers’s staff in Los Angeles.

Woodson is well-known for leading the Knicks to their single postseason series victory since 2000. In 2013, the 54-28 Knicks secured the Eastern Conference 2-seed and beat the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs; they were ultimately knocked out in the Conference Semifinals by a young Paul George and the Indiana Pacers. The following year, the Knicks underperformed, missing the playoffs entirely with a 37-45 record. Woodson was fired and has been with the Clippers ever since.

Woodson told the Post, “I think in New York, it’s better to have done this before … New York is a tough place to coach.” We’ll have to wait and see if Perry and Mills want to revert to the Woodson era or move ahead with a younger candidate in Jackson, Fizdale, or Stackhouse.
