Aaron Schlossberg, 42, is the New York City lawyer who went viral after a video was released online showing him going on an angry rant against employees speaking in Spanish to themselves and customers. Schlossberg was identified by social media users on Wednesday after the video of the rant went viral, according to WPIX-TV. Schlossberg’s rant has been called “racist” and “bigoted” by numerous social media users and media outlets.

In the 55-second viral video, Aaron Schlossberg is seen speaking with a Fresh Kitchen employee, visibly angry while reporting that the staff was speaking to customers in Spanish. Schlossberg said “they should be speaking in English.”

The employee tells Schlossberg that sometimes the staff does speak with customers in English, and Schlossberg quickly responds with “every person I listened to, he spoke it, he spoke it, she’s speaking it, it’s America. Your staff should be speaking English, not Spanish.”

Schlossberg also accused the staff (who he reportedly heard speaking Spanish) of being undocumented immigrants and threatened to call ICE agents on them. “My guess is they are not documented. So my next call is to ICE is to have each one of them kicked out of my country. If they have the balls to come here and live off of my money, I pay for their welfare, I pay for their ability to live here. The least they can do is speak English. If you intend on running a place in Midtown Manhattan your staff should be speaking English, not Spanish.”

He concludes his rant with “Honey, I’m calling ICE” and “Maybe you shouldn’t eat that sandwich, take a break from the food,” before leaving the restaurant.

One witness told The Gothamist that Schlossberg was “thrown out” of the establishment, saying “[They] let the lady stay but had the man go, because he was causing the trouble, screaming at people. The witness said, “I don’t know what to say. People are taught not to be bystanders, but it’s hard to get involved. This guy was really, really angry.”

Another worker who spoke with WPIX-TV said, “It was crazy. We just watched him scream, it was very fast. After he left, we just went back to work.”

Schlossberg has his own law office in Manhattan, which is right next door to Fresh Kitchen, where the viral incident took place. The video of the rant was first released online on Tuesday, May 15, by Edward Suazo, which can be seen on his Facebook account.

“They where on there [sic] lunch time and ordering there [sic] food and just because they where speaking in Spanish to the waiter this asshole jumps in and started to call the waiter and my wife and her best friend all types of names and threatened to call I.C.E on them and the employees,” Suazo wrote. “What a big man talking down to couple of women and a helpless employee. I wish someone tells me I can’t speak in my native language! First of all they wasn’t talking to you!!”

Kaitlin Marie Bennett is a 22-year-old Kent State graduate who has gone viral after she tweeted out a photo of herself with an AR-10 strapped to her back while holding a graduation cap which read, “COME AND TAKE IT”. An image of a miniature rifle was also crafted onto the cap. Bennett’s photo has resulted in numerous threats, some of which are violent, as a consequence to her demonstrating her political beliefs through the viral photo. The 22-year-old conservative has told reporters that the photo was in protest of the school’s anti-gun policies.

Bennett wrote in the Tweet, accompanying the photo, that she should be able to carry a weapon on campus, considering the fact that the Ohio national guard once opened fire on Kent State student protesters on May 4, 1970, killing four students in the process.

She sent out the tweet on Tuesday, May 13th, writing that, “Now that I graduated from @KentState, I can finally arm myself on campus. I should have been able to do so as a student – especially since 4 unarmed students were shot and killed by the government on this campus. #CampusCarryNow.”

The Kent State University graduate told Fox News that she finds it insulting that guests of the college are allowed to carry firearms, but students are banned from doing the same. Bennett is referring to Kent State’s policy which bars students, faculty, or staff from carrying “deadly weapons” on campus, according to the university’s website. Considering that Bennett was no longer a student at the time of the photo, she didn’t violate any policy laid out by Kent State University.

“I wanted to draw attention to the gun policies on campus that allow guests to open carry, but not students,” she told FOX News. “I find it insulting that the school values the lives of their guests more than those attending the university for four years.”

Who is Kaitlin Marie Bennett?

Kaitlin Marie Bennett is a recent graduate of Kent State University. She’s a 22-year-old conservative, a supporter of President Donald J. Trump, and an advocate of the second amendment. Bennett is also the founder of Liberty Hangout at Kent State, a politically libertarian group that seeks to promote “peace, prosperity, and property rights since 2015.”

The “About Us” section of the Liberty Hangout website gives a more detailed description of the group’s viewpoints:

“Founded as Young Jeffersonians on February 11, 2015, Liberty Hangout is a libertarian media outlet which strives to bring readers relevant insight into current events, as well as promote Austrian economics and property rights. We believe in self-rule, self-determination, and non-aggression. We believe taxation is theft, and that the services the state provides can and should be privatized. We believe in decentralization down to the individual level, and that the government which is closest to home is easiest to control. “

Bennett is a proud supporter of President Trump on her Twitter account. She has defended his alleged remarks that Haiti is a “sh*thole” country, but reassured that this comment didn’t include the people of Haiti themselves. Trump denies making this comment in the first place regarding the impoverished third-world nation.

“Dear @CNN, Trump said Haiti was a sh*thole COUNTRY,” Bennett wrote. “NOT that Haitians were sh*thole people. Please inform @andersoncooper.”

Bennett is a resident of Zanesville, Ohio.

Backlash Resulting From Bennett’s Viral Photo

Bennett has faced numerous violent threats as a result of her viral photo with an AR-10, some even threatening her life. The 22-year-old conservative screenshotted one threat from a person saying that “If i ever saw u id best the sh*t out of u no need for a gun just my fist knocking some sense into ur brainless ass.”

The Kent State graduate responded to this threat with the tweet, “Gun control advocates are trying to call me violent for my graduation picture that promotes the right to self-defense, meanwhile I’m getting threatening messages like this in my inbox from these very same people.”

She sent out a tweet two days later, with a similar message in mind.

“Thanks to all who have sent me death threats for taking a picture,” Bennett wrote in a tweet on May 16. “You’re the biggest advocates for gun rights. You proved exactly why people carry.”

Here’s a screenshot of another threat made against Ms. Bennett’s well-being:

Kaitlin Marie Bennett Photos: Kent State Graduate Viral Photo

Facebook screenshot

In the screenshot, Amanda Berk suggested that Bennett’s photo with the AR-10 and the cap which said “COME AND TAKE IT” is “a threat” and “they should take this white girl down. In handcuffs or a body bag.”

Facebook user Asher Underwood fired back with:

“thanks for responding… only kinda ironic that you are advocating death by violence or persecution by force for her making a political statement. ‘Come and Take it’ is an old slogan which is an appeal to honor 2nd amendment rights. Not sure I understand the psychology of advocating violence or police repression for the advocacy of first and second amendment rights? Please explain or clarify if you have the inclination.”

One person on social media even went as far as to take a jab at Bennett’s “white privilege.” Twitter user HighYella (@tallglasofawsum) wrote, “You think the PD woulda supported this shoot if you had more melanin?? Your white privilege prevents you from answering that question realistically, just a rhetorical question.”

Bennett replied to HighYella by tweeting, “The black officer that was with us during this photoshoot loved it, actually. Give him a call. Kent State University Campus PD.”

Another twitter user wrote, “A white person with a gun at school? Safe? LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.”

The 22-year-old gun-rights advocate responded with, “The tolerant and definitely-not-racist left wing at work here, folks.”

Top 10 Underdogs From The Premier League This Season

$

0

The 2017/2018 Premier League season has finally come to an end. We said a respectful goodbye to Arsène Wenger. Watched Mohamed Salah rise to the top as one of the best players in the league and secure the highly-praised Golden Boot Award. Cheered on Manchester City who not only won the league, but broke seven records along the way including most goals (106) and most wins (32). It was a whirlwind of emotions and we loved every minute of it.

Throughout the season we became very well acquainted with a few names. There were the obvious: Salah, Harry Kane, and Kevin de Bruyne. However, here are ten players who were just as important to their team’s success and although they may have gone unrecognized under your radar, these underdogs created greatly to heightening competition among the Premier League.

Romelu Lukaku

Instagram Photo

The Manchester United striker walked away with 16 goals and seven assists. Additionally, Lukaku had direct involvement with many of the goals scored by his team this past season. He was consistently good in every game and at just 25 years-old, he seems to be getting better with age.

Eden Hazard

Instagram Photo

No, this wasn’t Hazard’s best season for Chelsea. Regardless, he’s still one of the top players in the league and although he could have performed better, he was a crucial component for his team’s attack. The midfielder scored 12 goals this season and maintained his title as one of the best dribblers in Europe’s top five leagues.

James Tarkowski

Instagram Photo

The Englishman is the center back for Burnley and is largely responsible for the club’s success this season. After Michael Keane switched to Everton, Burnley’s defense took a hit. However, Tarkowski changed this. The 25-year-old maintained a strong presence in the back, ranking among the top ten in the league for aerial clearances and aerial duels won.

Riyad Mahrez

Instagram Photo

Jamie Vardy is usually the stand-out player for Leicester City and he did do an excellent job this season. There’s no arguing that. Vardy scored 20 goals for his team but not without Mahrez’s help, who ended the season with 12 goals and 10 assists. It was the combo of Mahrez and Vardy that ultimately led to Leicester City performing as well as they did.

Shane Duffy

Instagram Photo

Brighton certainly didn’t have a great season. Despite this, the club still had a few stand-out players. Duffy was one of them. At center back, the Irishman was busy. He made the most clearances and blocks per game out of the whole league, and won the most aerial duels out of all the center backs. It makes sense for Duffy to switch teams for a better opportunity, but then again it seems like Brighton really needs him.

Christopher Schindler

Instagram Photo

Huddersfield was another team that had a poor league season. The club finished 16th, but Schindler remained strong as a center back. The 28-year-old held a positive attitude, trying to focus on the strength of his team rather than their shortcomings. Out of all the center backs in the league, Schindler made the most tackles.

Kurt Zouma

Instagram Photo

At only 23, Zouma had a terrific season even though Stoke City did not. As a defender, he was a solid opponent and proved his worth as a Premier League player. He excelled at intercepting the ball and making critical clearances. After this past season, Stoke City was relegated, but fortunately Zouma will be seen playing in the next Premier League with Chelsea.

Craig Dawson

Instagram Photo

West Brom had the absolute worst season, finishing dead last in the league. It’s easy to just write this team off, but before you do that, there’s one player you may want to save. Dawson was center back for the club and saved the team from drowning as much as he could. The 28-year-old is an incredibly strong player in the air and has this kick-ass ability to stop attackers in their tracks. Hopefully he’ll be making an appearance in the next Premier League as well.

Abdoulaye Doucouré

Instagram Photo

The 25-year-old midfielder was captain of Watford’s metaphorical ship. Doucouré was involved in nearly every play and averaged more passes than any other player on his team. Out of all the players in the league, the Frenchman won the most possession in the middle third of the field.

Nick Pope

Instagram Photo

The Burnley goalie is no de Gea– not yet. The 26-year-old acquired plenty of attention over this past season though. He’s among the top three goalies in the league with 114 saves and 11 clean sheets. His performance has additionally boosted him to England’s squad team for this year’s World Cup. Burnley’s gotta be proud.

Florida Teacher Who Drowned Raccoons In Class Placed On Leave

A Florida teacher is being investigated after parents said he had students participate in the alleged drowning of two wild raccoons and an opossum at school on Monday, May 14.

A 14-second video published by ClickOrlando shows a group of students filling a tub of water using a hose and later keeping a trapped raccoon submerged. A mother told the TV station that her son, who shot the video, came home upset about what happened to the raccoons, including the one seen in the video, inside a metal wire trap.

The animals had reportedly been killing chickens that the students were raising for class.

The teacher, Dewie Brewton, was placed on paid administrative leave with pay Tuesday while the school investigates, said Kevin Christian, spokesman for Marion County Public Schools. “Marion County’s education standards—in fact, Florida’s education standards—do not include activities for the destruction of live animals, nuisance or not,” the statement said.

Christian said he couldn’t comment further, saying only that Brewton was placed on leave as part of the standard protocol. He also said that district officials did not have previous problems with Brewton in the 34 years he has worked on and off for the district.

via Gizmodo:

The superintendent of the district, Dr. Heidi Maier, has expressed a desire to see the teacher fired and both the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Department of Health have opened independent investigations into the incident.

But the high school alumni group is standing behind the teacher and his actions. Forest High School’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) Alumni released a statement on Facebook defending Brewton, describing him as a “man of faith” and blaming the media for reporting on the incident.

The investigation is ongoing with more details to come.

Top 10 True Stereotypes About Boston Universities

$

Boston is known as a college town. 80 plus colleges all crammed together in the state of Massachusetts is what you can call a disaster. Can you say disaster kids? Well maybe not a disaster but it sure can lead to a lot of rivalries or rumors. Boston Universities are the mean girls of the United States. Basically, high school bullies in college. You have your preppy, your sporty, your nerdy, your rejects, your richie rich, your artsy, and of course the overachievers. Now, I’m not saying that Boston is a place to stay away from, this is just some information to prepare you for what you might get into. Here are the stereotypes of some Boston Universities.

Harvard

Instagram Photo

Do you like having a social life, hanging with friends, or sleep? If you said yes to all three of those and applied to Harvard, say goodbye to it all. If you did get into Harvard, congratulations, you must be really smart and really rich. So, get yourself a Harvard sweatshirt and be prepared to live in your dorm room for the 4 years you attend, because you won’t see the light of day until you graduate.

MIT

Instagram Photo

Do you remember that one kid in math class that sat in the front of the class, yeah they are going to MIT. The math and science know it all’s are on their computer right now trying to become the next Steve Jobs. There are probably dorm mates planning the next shuttle launch or figuring out how eighty-eight miles per hour equals time travel. While MIT students are doing this, the rest of us are creating a social life.

Tufts

Instagram Photo

Tufts students are the MIT and Harvard rejects. They all have the dreaded rejection letters sitting in their trashcans. Tuft students are smart, just not smart enough for Harvard and MIT. But, don’t feel too bad. Most Tuft students are really quick in expressing how much better they are than the Ivy league schools. Tuft students = one uppers.

Berklee

Instagram Photo

This one time at band camp, I played a lot of music and talked about music then smoked a massive blunt. In a nutshell that’s Berklee. The artsy musical students of Boston. It’s all music to them, it’s their goal to be the next rising star like their fellow alumni, Steven Tyler and John Mayer. They also have the occasional blunt and 6 pack like every good Berklee student does on a Monday night.

Emerson is like the hipster twin of Berklee. The artsy fartsy students that like to wear their beanies, skinny jeans, clear plastic glasses, and carry their grande Starbucks coffee in one hand while smoking a cigarette in the other – basically hipsters. They make homeless look like the new fall catalog for Urban Outfitters, but without the cardboard sign.

You know that terrifying feeling when you are at the library and if you make a sound the librarian will shush you? Those librarians are Wellesley students. They like peace and quiet but rub them the wrong way and they will kill. The only way to tame an angry Wellesley student is to pair them with a Harvard student. It’s like a moth to a flame.

Suffolk

There are two groups at Suffolk. The first, the graduate group who are real people that care about their lives and being successful. The second is everyone else who are still living in the glory days of high school. The undergraduates think they are the top dogs, smoke and drink anything in sight, and constantly wear the one pair of sweatpants until it’s time to spray the febreze. They don’t need to start caring until graduation when they actually need to wear a decent pair of pants.

Northeastern

The college that makes you stay an extra year for fun. Not really, but it is a school that makes you stay for 5 years in order to graduate. If you ever come across someone who is attending Northeastern, don’t ask them what year they are it’s best that neither of you know. In their heads, the extra year is what will help them get a better job. In everyone else’s heads, they have that job already.

Boston College (BC)

Very easy to mix up with BU. Future advice if you are ever in Boston and get BC mixed up with BU, run and hide. BC students spend most of their time picking out their J. Crew and Vineyard Vine outfits, partying, and doing as little of their homework as they possibly can while still earning a 4-year degree. In short these are the “Brad’s” of Boston.

And then there are the rivals of BC or just the other evil twin. Not known for the scholarly achievement but well known for their mass amounts of money. Most of BU student body is filled with the peppy rich girls, cocky frat boys, and the rejects of BC. Don’t get me wrong, BU students are smart, they just have a little snobby and self-centered personality sprinkled in the mix of what they call a brain.

COED’s Beer of the Week – New Belgium Fat Tire

New Belgium

Tired of drinking lukewarm Keystone Light out of a 6-month-old keg? Trying to move past Bud Light Limes and Coronas? Crushed enough 30-racks to last a lifetime? The point is, you’re likely at that stage in your life (or close to it) where you want to drink better beer.

Don’t feel bad, as it happens to all of us at one point or another. While shitty beer never really goes away — trust me, stale kegs and 30’s are still very much a thing in post-grad life — decent beer becomes further appreciated and desired the older you get. While I get f*cked up way less than I did in college, I actually kind of drink more now because I have a delicious new beer with my dinner every night. And buddy, let me let you in on a little secret … Shock Top and Magic Hat #9 don’t count.

So, with all that in mind, we decided to set the very obtainable (and enjoyable) goal of trying, and hopefully enjoying, a new beer every week.

Me in the meeting finding out COED is going to allocate budget to buy me beer.

From popular IPA’s to obscure chocolate stouts, this is COED’s Beer of the Week.

Beer History

via New Belgium:

After a trip to Europe, New Belgium’s co-founder returned to Colorado from Belgium with a handful of ingredients and an idea. Two years later, Fat Tire – named in honor of his inspired bike ride across the Belgian countryside – pedaled its way into the hearts of beer drinkers. Now considered an iconic centerpiece of the craft beer movement, Fat Tire represents the American spirit of craft brewing ingenuity and an irresistible imagination that reminds us all to rediscover our playful side.

Fat Tire’s unique flavor profile originates from the late 1930s, when local Belgian breweries aimed to satisfy the tastes of visiting British soldiers. English floral hops, subtle malt sweetness and spicy, fruity notes from Belgian yeast made for a balanced yet magical combination. These same characteristics are at the heart of Fat Tire. Classified as an Ameri-Belgo style ale by the revered Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup competitions, Fat Tire blends a fine malt presence, fresh herbal hop balance and a touch of fruity yeast to offer drinkers everywhere a timeless craft beer experience with a rare blend of balance and complexity.

The 67th Miss USA pageant is set to take place on May, 21 at the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum in Shreveport, Louisiana. The event will be hosted by Vannessa and Nick Lachey. Last years winner Kara McCullough of the District of Columbia will be on hand to crown her successor. Currently, FOX holds the broadcasting rights.

The venue marks the 20th year anniversary of the events first appearance in Shreveport, Louisiana. All 50 states and the District of Columbia will be represented. The pageant is a two-hour special trotting out the hottest women each state has to offer. And, judging by the above pictures, we will all be in for a treat with the smokeshows this year’s competition has supplied.

The contest includes an interview portion, gown attire portion, and a swimsuit portion. The pageant will air live on FOX at 8 PM EST. The Miss USA winner will then go on to compete in the Miss Universe pageant.

Instagram Photo

President Donald Trump ran the pageant from 1996-2015, during which time NBC broadcasted the event. Eventually, WME/IMG purchased the pageant from Trump in September 2015. The first Miss USA pageant was held in 1950 with Yolande Betbeze being crowned the winner. The the first competition unsurprisingly was shrouded in controversy as the winner refused to pose publicly for pictures in her bikini. The first concurrent Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants were held in 1952. Initially, not all states sent a representative. It wasn’t until the 1970’s that all states participated in the event. Since the inception of the event, the crowned Miss USA winner has gone on to win eight times at the Miss Universe pageant.

The Miss USA winner signs a one-year contract to do promotional work around the country and often times overseas. The winner advocates about control of diseases, peace, and public awareness of AIDS. Other major benefits of winning the competition include a cash allowance, a New York Film Academy scholarship, a modeling portfolio, beauty products, clothes, shoes, as well as styling, healthcare, and fitness services by different sponsors of the pageant.

Nick Carter Net Worth As Of 2018: $35 Million

Being a Backstreet Boy pays off, apparently. Let’s take a look back at Nick’s over twenty-year career in music.

Early Life

Instagram Photo

Carter was born in Jamestown, NY on January 28, 1980. He began his acting and singing career at a young age when his mother enrolled him in voice lessons and dance lessons in ballet and tap at Karl and DiMarco’s School of Theatre and Dance when he was 10. Two years later, he auditioned for Disney’s The Mickey Mouse Club and the Backstreet Boys. He received offers from both groups and ultimately decided to join the Backstreet Boys. The Mickey Mouse Club was canceled just a couple years later.

1993-2002

At only 13 years old, Carter, AJ McLean, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, and Kevin Richardson formed the pop group Backstreet Boys in April 1993. Nick is the youngest member. The group has recorded several albums, beginning in the mid-1990s, the latest being 2013’s In a World Like This. In March 2016, the group announced that they will begin an exclusive headlining residency at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas called Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life.

2002-2011

In 2002, when the Backstreet Boys expressed a strong desire to leave their management company, The Firm, Carter chose to remain with them to manage his solo career. As the group began recording their new album without him, he started working on his first solo album. Now Or Never was released on October 29, 2002, and it reached No. 17 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified gold, both in the United States and Canada. Carter’s second album, I’m Taking Off, was released in February 2011. It received moderate success, especially in Japan where it reached no. 8 on the charts.

Carter’s third solo album, All American, was released on November 25, 2015. In support of the album, Carter toured in February and March 2016. In May 2018, The Backstreet Boys released their new single, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” marking their first song debut since “Show ‘Em (What You’re Made Of)” off their 2013 album, In a World Like This.

Philippa Charlotte Middleton Matthews, better known as “Pippa Middleton,” is an English socialite, planner and writer, although she is arguably best known as the younger sister of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, the wife of Prince William, the Duke of Catherine, who himself is in the direct line of succession to the British royal throne. Let’s take a look at her life over the years, starting with her net worth!

Pippa Middleton Net Worth: £30 Million

Pippa Middleton’s net worth is estimated to be around £30 million, which is the equivalent of $50 million. Let’s take a look at her life over the years to see how she came so far,

The Early Years

Middleton was raised in Berkshire and was originally educated at private boarding schools. Like her sister, she was educated at St. Andrew’s School, later attending Marlborough College on scholarship. She later graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in English literature. She also worked for her parents’ company Party Pieces, particularly editing its web magazine.

2008-2011

After graduation, Middleton found work in public relations, helping to promote luxury products. She then went on to work for Table Talk in the field of events management. Even by 2008, she was already considered a socialite in her home country, often appearing in publications with various celebrities. In 2010, she served as her sister’s maid of honor during her wedding to Prince William; her name and appearance at the wedding became well-publicized in media throughout the world.

Middleton was paid a £400,000 advance for a book on party planning by Penguin Books, which was published in 2012 as Celebrate; the following year, however, she parted ways with her literary agent. Furthering her career as a writer, she has been a columnist for multiple publications, like The Spectator, Waitrose Kitchen, Vanity Fair and The Sunday Telegraph. In 2013, she became the sole director and shareholder of PXM Enterprises Limited. In 2016, Middleton became engaged to James Matthews, a professional racing driver turned hedge fund manager, marrying the following year. As Matthews is the son and heir of David Matthews, the Laird of Glen Affric, Middleton could obtain the courtesy title of Lady Glen Affric if her husband inherits his father’s lairdship.

WATCH: Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano Erupts [VIDEO]

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has erupted from its summit, shooting up to about 30,000 feet into the sky. Although nearby areas have been evacuated and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where the crater sits, has been closed since May 11, officials don’t expect the explosion to be deadly as long as people avoid the area. The eruption of the volcano has been caught on video and we’ve compiled a list for you to see firsthand!

What happened?

According to the Associated Press, Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes; looking at its history, an eruption killed one person in 1924, sending ash and dust in the air for a period of 17 days.

According to Kion 546, while, as mentioned above, the eruption is not expected to be deadly, nearby residents are being asked to shelter in place in order to avoid the eruption, if they are in the path of the ash plume, which appears to be traveling southeast thanks to the wind.

Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes

Both local and global news organizations appear to be releasing video footage of the erupting volcano.

According to CNN, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory issued the following statement to residents, warning them to be careful while driving in the area:

“Driving conditions may be dangerous so if you are driving pull off the road and wait until visibility improves.”

At this time, while unconfirmed, there is speculation that this is a phreatic eruption, which is capable of sending ash plumes as far off as 12 miles from the summit. Phreatic eruptions can be hard to track, as they occur “with little or no warning,” as confirmed by Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologist Janet Babb. The ash itself is not believed to be poisonous but sulfur dioxide released by volcano fissures can be toxic.

Before the eruption, in a press release, the county’s Civil Defense Agency also issued the following warning:

“Severe conditions may exist such as choking and inability to breathe.”

“This is a serious situation that affects the entire exposed population.”

College Bar of the Week: Olde Queens Tavern @ Rutgers University

College bars are as essential to the college experience as the student themselves. The cheap drinks, the shitty bathrooms, the bouncers who let people in the back door, the random hook-ups, the fights, the outrageously attractive bartenders, the 2 a.m. hail marys — all the things that make the college experience memorable likely happen

This week we feature Rutgers’ favorite watering hole, Olde Queens Tavern, an establishment at the New Brunswick-based school since 1933. Open early on game days and late on every other night of the week, Olde Queens Tavern (or simply “Queens” to Rutgers students) is the university’s premier bar.

The drink specials are the best deals on campus, bar none (see what I did there?). $3 Jack Daniels and Captain Morgan drinks on Monday and Wednesdays, $3 Svedka and Barcadi drinks on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and $1 Bud Lights all week, Queens is by far the best bang for your buck. It’s also one of the only establishments on campus to have *two* bars, meaning the service at Queens is also the best at Rutgers.

Queens can be known as the greek life bar which certainly rubs a couple of people the wrong way, but if you’re looking for attractive people, cheap drinks, and a damn good time, this is the place.

The finalists for the 2017-18 NBA Awards have officially been announced, and all winners will be revealed on Monday, June 25. Most of the winning narratives were written long before the season’s end, but all candidates have performed brilliantly and are worth consideration. Let’s review the nominees and figure out who’s got their trophy locked up, while pairing some completely made-up winning odds with each performer.

Most Valuable Player

Instagram Photo

James Harden is going to win. We already know this. It may not be a unanimous vote, but the Beard balled out from opening tip in October with vengeance on his mind (he was the first runner-up to both Steph Curry in 2015 and Russell Westbrook in 2017). In 2017-18, Harden led the league in scoring (30.4 PPG) and was third in assists (8.8 APG), while improving his field goal and three-point percentages and, most importantly, his team’s winning percentage. Harden’s play propelled the Rockets to a 65-17 record, and today they’re in healthy position to challenge the Golden State Warriors for the Western Conference title.

Odds to win: 93%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Unless he flames out in the playoffs, yes.

Instagram Photo

We take LeBron James for granted, and it’s going to come back to bite us. The greatest basketball player in the world hasn’t won a regular-season MVP award since 2013! What is wrong with us? LeBron put together one of the most remarkable regular seasons of his career in 2017-18: he played all 82 games, led the league in minutes, scored more points than James Harden, and had the best rebounds and assists averages of his 15-year career. Not to mention, the team around him was pretty terrible when not constantly in flux, yet he’s still managed to carry them to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Odds to win: 4%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Without question.

Instagram Photo

Anthony Davis and the oft-overlooked New Orleans Pelicans enjoyed one of the most memorable seasons in franchise history in 2017-18. The Brow and his partner in scoring and rebounding crime, DeMarcus Cousins, were blossoming together before the most rudely timed Achilles injury ever forced Davis to go it alone. The Brow, with the responsibility of an entire team on his shoulders, averaged 35 points and 13 rebounds in February, when he singlehandedly changed the Pels’ fate: AD ultimately led New Orleans to a 48-34 record and the No. 6 seed in the West in spite of preseason projections that had them missing the playoffs entirely.

Odds to win: 3%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Sure, if he never ends up winning an MVP. And you know that won’t happen.

Rookie of the Year

Instagram Photo

He may be a redshirt, but Ben Simmons is this year’s frontrunner for Rookie of the Year. Alongside Joel Embiid, Simmons transformed the Philadelphia 76ers from laughing stock of the league into (future) title contenders; the duo led the Sixers to 52 wins in 2017-18 and helped to secure the No. 3 seed in the East. Behind Magic-like averages of 15.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 8.2 assists, Simmons put together one of the most impressive and well-rounded rookie seasons since LeBron’s debut in 2003. Simmons also recorded a bizarre 12 triple-doubles in the regular season, good for second place in rookie history behind Oscar Robertson. The 21-year-old still has work to do (ahem, the jumpshot), but he’s already proven that he can be a future NBA MVP.

Odds to win: 60%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Yes.

Instagram Photo

Donovan Mitchell is the player no one quite accounted for. Picked 13th in the 2017 NBA Draft, Mitchell approached his rookie season without debilitating pressure–he wasn’t counted on to lead the Utah Jazz anywhere, let alone to the playoffs. So much for that. Mitchell and the Jazz quietly subverted expectations, turning a 17-24 start to 2017-18 into the No. 5 seed in the West. Mitchell led all rookies in scoring (20.5 PPG), broke Damian Lillard’s rookie record for threes made in a season (187), and joined an exclusive club–made up of elder statesmen Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, and David Robinson–when he became one of only five rookies in NBA history to lead a 45-win team in scoring. It’s mathematically unlikely that Mitchell and Simmons can be co-Rookies of the Year, so can we please change the rules?

Odds to win: 39%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Yes. Think of the self-serving merchandise he’s invested in!

Instagram Photo

If Rookie of the Year were measured by team success, this race would be even tighter. No. 3 pick Jayson Tatum has been playing like a seasoned vet, and it’s hard to stomach that he’s just 20 years old. As an integral contributor to the unbelievable 2017-18 Celtics, Tatum stepped up and did his part to help Boston to a 55-27 record and the No. 2 seed in the East. Tatum was one of the most consistent and dependable players on a team whose key players seemed to drop like houseflies, averaging 13.9 points on 47.5% shooting and 43.4% three-point shooting. The kid has emerged as a potential future member of the 50-40-90 club (82.6% from the free throw line) and no doubt an annual All-Star before long. Tatum shoulders great responsibility and has proven that he’s a team player and a winner; he won’t lose any sleep over coming in third.

Odds to win: 1%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Nah.

Defensive Player of the Year

Instagram Photo

For a second consecutive season, Utah’s Rudy Gobert is a Defensive Player of the Year finalist–and this must be his year. The Stifle Tower anchored the league’s second-best defense, and has proven time and again that he is the most frightening paint presence in the NBA (just look at what he did to Russell Westbrook and the Thunder in the first round of the playoffs). Donovan Mitchell deserves his due credit for offensively pushing the Jazz over the top in 2017-18, but they wouldn’t have accomplished nearly as much without Gobert on the other end. Much of Utah’s early-season losing coincided with his absence due to injury; with Gobert back in the lineup from late January on, Utah went an incredible 30-8 to close out the season. Gobert averaged 13.5 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks in 56 games, and topped competitors with a defensive real plus-minus of 5.14.

Odds to win: 80%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Yes.

Instagram Photo

In addition to his MVP nod, Anthony Davis nabbed a nomination for Defensive Player of the Year. AD wasn’t just an offensive monster in 2017-18 — he cemented his status as one of the best defenders and most threatening rim protectors in the league too. In one of the great defensive showdowns of the season, AD notched a career-high 10 blocks against Gobert and the Jazz back in March. Overall, Davis led the league in blocks with 2.7 per game, and was sixth in defensive real plus-minus (3.80). The Pelicans weren’t the greatest defensive team (they’d clock in at 13th in defensive rating) despite boasting Davis and two-way magician Jrue Holiday, and this will hurt the Brow’s chances at this particular accolade.

Odds to win: 10%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Not really.

Instagram Photo

Alongside Rookie of the Year hopeful Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid enjoyed a breakout season for the ages. In 63 regular-season games, Embiid put up 22.9 points, 11 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks, and a defensive real plus-minus of 3.60. The 76ers enjoyed the league’s third-best defensive rating (102) and fourth-best net rating (5.4) behind just the Rockets, Warriors, and Raptors. Among all players who notched at least 10 minutes in 60 games, Embiid ranked first in opponent field goal percentage. Embiid was voted an All-Star starter for the first time this year, and is well on his way to becoming the face of the NBA.

Odds to win: 10%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Nah. He’ll win this one within three years.

Sixth Man of the Year

Instagram Photo

Yes, Lou Williams should have been an All-Star this year. He knows that better than any of us, but hopefully he’ll feel ever so slightly vindicated when he collects Sixth Man accolades in June. Williams, who won the award in 2015 as a member of the Toronto Raptors (and inspired Drake’s “6 Man”), managed to lead the Los Angeles Clippers in scoring and assists from the bench. In fact, 2017-18 was the 31-year-old’s best scoring season to date, and he averaged 30 minutes per game for the first time in his career. Williams was by far the most productive reserve in the league; a unanimous win wouldn’t be surprising.

Odds to win: 96%

Would we regret not giving him this award? He’d make us regret it, that’s for sure.

Instagram Photo

Last year’s Sixth Man winner, Eric Gordon, netted 18 points per game off the bench for the Rockets this season. Gordon played 69 games in 2017-18, the most since his rookie campaign nine years ago, and put up his best scoring average since he was a starter for the Clippers in 2010-11. He actually ended up having to start 30 games due to injuries to Chris Paul and James Harden, and this (individual of Sweet Lou’s groundbreaking season) hurts his case most despite the Rockets’ enormous team success.

Odds to win: 2%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Not really.

Instagram Photo

Fred VanVleet led the Bench Mob that was so integral to the Toronto Raptors’ 59-win season, and this award nod is well-deserved. VanVleet, whose inspiring rise through the D-League culminated in this indispensable reserve role, averaged 8.6 points on 42.6% shooting and 41.4% three-point shooting in 76 games through 2017-18. VanVleet made just $1.3 million in his breakout year, and is set up for quite the payday in July when he hits restricted free agency. For an undrafted, undersized competitor like VanVleet, his story is awarding in itself.

Odds to win: 2%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Nope. He may have been playing hurt, but his playoffs were painful to watch.

Most Improved Player

Instagram Photo

Victor Oladipo is set up perfectly for the Most Improved accolade. After his third bounce around the league, the fifth-year player finally found a home in Indiana, where he led the Pacers to an inconceivable 48-win season and the No. 5 seed in the East. It wasn’t long before the once-lopsided Paul George trade lopped the other way in favor of the Pacers; head coach Nate McMillan let Oladipo be himself, and the rest was history. The 25-year-old phenom put up career averages in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals en route to his first All-Star selection, improving shooting percentages across the board. But his greatest accomplishment? Challenging LeBron James and the Cavs to seven exhausting games in the first round of the playoffs. That may not count towards MIP votes, but it was the cherry on top of a season Oladipo wasn’t supposed to headline.

Odds to win: 91%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Yes.

Instagram Photo

It’s hard to make a name for yourself when you’re playing behind a bona fide MVP in James Harden and one of the greatest point guards in history in Chris Paul. Clint Capela rose to the occasion anyway. The 24-year-old made his fourth NBA campaign his most meaningful, leading the league in field goal percentage at 65.2% and anchoring the Houston defense with a top-20 defensive real plus-minus. Capela posted regular-season averages of 13.9 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks, and was, ironically, the true difference-maker for a team that relies on small-ball and three-point shooting.

Odds to win: 7%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Not necessarily. He hasn’t been impactful in the Conference Finals, showing he has even more room to improve.

Instagram Photo

New York basketball fans actually have something to be proud of! Brooklyn’s Spencer Dinwiddie is up for consideration for Most Improved Player this year, and he hasn’t been shy about knowing he deserves it. One of few bright spots in yet another gloomy season for the Nets, Dinwiddie averaged career bests in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and minutes. Called upon to fill gaps left by a sidelined Jeremy Lin and oft-inactive D’Angelo Russell, Dinwiddie stole the show, proving himself a remarkable talent–and a clutch one at that, hitting game-winning shots against the Timberwolves, Pistons, and Hawks all in January alone. Dinwiddie’s become the face of the Brooklyn Nets organization, and hopefully will lead them somewhere a little more meaningful come 2019.

Odds to win: 2%

Would we regret not giving him this award? No. It’s hard to remember that the Nets are an NBA team.

Coach of the Year

Instagram Photo

It’s awkward, but not unexpected. The recently fired Dwane Casey will most likely be earning Coach of the Year accolades this year after leading the Toronto Raptors through an incredible regular season. He completely overhauled the team’s system in the offseason, successfully changing the Raptors’ very culture and accruing the best record in the Eastern Conference. Thus reveals the dramatic irony of these end-of-season awards: the Cavaliers’ 4-0 domination of the Raptors in the Conference Semifinals this year led directly to Casey losing his job, in spite of a brilliant and revolutionary regular season. Whether or not you agree that Casey deserved the sack, acknowledge that he absolutely deserves this award.

Odds to win: 75%

Would we regret not giving him this award? The real question is, “will we regret his firing?” and the answer is an emphatic yes.

Losing talents like Gordon Hayward and George Hill is a tough pill to swallow for any coach approaching a season filled with question marks, but aforementioned nominees Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert made Quin Snyder’s job a lot easier. You know by now that the Utah Jazz achieved the unbelievable, notching the No. 5 seed in the West after a miserable start to 2017-18. Nine games below .500 in late January, Utah finished with an outstanding winning record. Snyder engineered an equal opportunity offense and a league-leading defense, ballasted by Mitchell and Gobert, respectively. The Jazz, once counted out of contention, have emerged as a revamped threat to the NBA hierarchy.

Odds to win: 15%

Would we regret not giving him this award? If the Jazz could have managed to upset the Rockets, yes.

Brad Stevens was bordering on an afterthought going into Coach of the Year voting, largely because the Celtics hadn’t yet pulled off the insane postseason run we’re bearing witness to at this very moment. Stevens has emerged as a Popovich-like savant, instilling a winning, plug-n-play system that has allowed the Celtics–who’ve been playing an injury-induced game of musical chairs all season–to emerge as true title contenders. His development and utilization of young talent in Terry Rozier, Jaylen Brown, and Jayson Tatum has adequately supplemented the absences of All-Star offseason free agent acquisitions in Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving.

Odds to win: 10%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Obviously.

Former President Of Temple University Fraternity Charged With Rape

Ari Goldstein, the 21-year-old ex-president of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity at Temple University, was arraigned on Wednesday, May 16, on charges of sexual assault.

According to reports, the investigation into Goldstein and Alpha Epsilon Pi, commonly referred to as AEPi, began in early May after two teenage Temple University students said they were sexually assaulted at the fraternity house in February and March. The house is located on Broad and Norris Street in Philadelphia.

Temple University halted the fraternity’s activities in April after “multiple credible reports” of underage drinking, drug use, and at least two sexual assault incidents.

via New York Daily News:

Philadelphia police previously said three women, including two 19-year-old Temple students, reported being sexually assaulted at Alpha Epsilon Pi events. At least one of the assaults happened in February, cops said, and a second the following month.

One of the teens reportedly told cops the frat brothers gave her several drinks, after which she blacked out — believing she was sexually assaulted.

Alpha Epsilon Pi’s national chapter tried to distance itself from Goldstein on Wednesday, noting the actual arrest happened after the Temple student was removed as chapter president.

Philadelphia Police Captain Mark Burgmann said during a press conference about one of the victims: “She was given several drinks by members of the fraternity. She says she became dizzy and disoriented, and that’s the last thing she remembered until she woke up in bed with one of the members of the fraternity.”

Jonathan Pierce, a spokesperson for Alpha Epsilon Pi, said Goldstein was removed as chapter president “several weeks ago.” At the time of this writing, he was being held on $2 million bail. He is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on May 31.

You can read Pierce’s full statement for AEPi below:

“Alpha Epsilon Pi International has no additional information about the charges being brought. We have not been informed — nor would we expect to be — of any of the allegations made or the evidence found. We will continue, though, to cooperate with Temple University and all local authorities. The young man charged was not the chapter president at the time of his arrest. He had been removed as president several weeks ago and the chapter has been suspended by the International Fraternity for nearly a month. We are, obviously, deeply troubled by the charges leveled at this young man. We believe in due process but there is clearly no place for this behavior in our organization and, if proven true, I would expect the individual to be permanently expelled from our fraternity.”

Let’s Revisit Some Of The Best Moments Of NFL’s ‘Hard Knocks’

The Cleveland Browns have been selected as the subjects for the 2018 season of Hard Knocks. There are going to be a lot of intriguing storylines, like the QB battle between Tyrod Taylor and number one pick Baker Mayfield. The Browns are coming off of a 0-16 season and went through a major roster overhaul this offseason. There will be big personalities, like receivers Josh Gordon and Jarvis Landry, along with Mayfield. There will be lots of drama, comedy, and intrigue surrounding the players and coaches, so let’s take a look back at some of the best Hard Knocks moments.

Vontae Davis gets traded from the Dolphins to the Colts

Vontae Davis was one of the best cornerbacks in the league during his time with the Colts. However, he was traded to the Colts during the 2012 preseason from the Miami Dolphins. His reaction was so genuine and so heartbreaking that it couldn’t be left off this list. Reactions like this are precisely what Hard Knocks wants to capture.

William Hayes Believes What??

Aaron Donald is the best defensive lineman on the Rams, and probably the best in the league, but he didn’t win the hearts of football fans like William Hayes did during 2016’s Hard Knocks with the Los Angeles Rams. While taking a tour of a dinosaur exhibit, Hayes told us all that he doesn’t believe that dinosaurs are real, even while looking at real dinosaur bones. Yet, it’s revealed later in the show that he does believe in mermaids.

Rex Ryan Wants A Snack

Rex Ryan was one of the most exciting coaches the NFL had seen in a while. The Jets had Hard Knocks in 2010, and Ryan gave a very emotional speech to his team the night before a game. This is the inside the locker room type view that football fans want to see from the show, and Ryan didn’t disappoint, finishing his speech with one of the most memorable quotes in NFL history.

Chad Ochocinco

Need I say more? Anything coming out of this guy’s mouth is must-see TV. Hard Knocks understood that and during their first season with the Bengals. I would say more, but just listen…

BIG Vince Wilfork Shows It Off

Vince Wilfork only spent two seasons in Houston, but it was a very memorable experience, thanks to Hard Knocks. During their season with the Texans, Wilfork decided to let it all hang loose one day. He decided to come to work wearing just his overalls… nothing else. As scary as that might sound coming from a 325-pound man, it’s still a moment that will live forever.

Michael Keaton Went Full Superhero During His Kent State Commencement Speech

Its graduation season, and with graduation season, comes Commencement Speech season. Actors, politicians, CEOs, musicians, artists, even Presidents (I saw President Obama speak at my Rutgers University graduation, no big deal) make their way to various universities across the nation in an effort to impart lasting wisdom on America’s future.

Not all graduating classes are so lucky, though, as years upon years of graduates have been forced to sit through speeches that were given by obscure doctors and businessmen. Others (like myself, who saw the President speak, NBD), however, were lucky enough to see someone like Batman.

Michael Keaton — the ORIGINAL Batman, the Bruce Wayne actor who got the Bat Craze in America started — was the speaker at this year’s Kent State University & gave those lucky kids a speech to remember.

While most speakers choose to leave the graduating class with an inspirational or sentimental quote, Keaton decided to sign off with something far more self-aware.

“I’ve got two words that I want you all to remember. They’re very important, and if I leave you with anything, I’m going to leave you with these two words. And those two words are: I’m Batman,” Keaton said before signing off.

And just like that, the 2018 Kent State graduating class was given a memory they’ll never forget. Well played, Batman.
