Early Years

Morgan Freeman was born on June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee. Freeman grew up with his paternal grandmother in Charleston, Mississippi, before bouncing around the country during his childhood and eventually finding himself in Chicago, Illinois. The future star began acting at age 9 and won a state drama competition at age 12. After high school, Freeman turned down a scholarship offer from Jackson State University to pursue a career as an automatic tracking radar repairman in the United States Air Force. Freeman eventually rose to the rank of Airman 1st Class.

Acting Career

After serving in the military, Freeman began taking acting lessons at Pasadena Playhouse and dance lessons in San Francisco. He worked as a dancer at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City, while also being a member of the Opera Ring musical theater group in San Francisco. He began serving in small roles and appeared in off-broadway productions, before debuting on Broadway in an all-black version of Hello, Dolly! in 1968. He continued to work in theater before making a name for himself on the silver screen.

Freeman began seeing bigger roles in films like Driving Miss Daisy, Glory, and The Shawshank Redemption in the mid-1980s. He went on to act in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Unforgiven, Seven, and Deep Impact. Freeman was nominated for leading actor for Driving Miss Daisy and The Shawshank Redemption, before winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Million Dollar Baby. Freeman also narrated the Academy Award-winning documentary March of the Penguins.

In more recent years, Freeman has found roles in films like Bruce Almighty, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, The Bucket List, The Maiden Heis, Long Walk to Freedom, Invictus, Red, Lucy, and more.

Sexual Assault Allegations

On Thursday, May 24, 2018, Freeman was accused of inappropriate behavior and harassment by a total of 18 women. CNN reported the news, detailing accounts that allegedly occurred while promoting his movies and at his production company Revelations Entertainment.

From the report:

Of those 16, seven people described an environment at Revelations Entertainment that included allegations of harassment or inappropriate behavior by Freeman there, with one incident allegedly witnessed by Lori McCreary, Freeman’s co-founder in the enterprise, and another in which she was the target of demeaning comments by Freeman in a public setting. One of those seven people alleged that McCreary made a discriminatory remark regarding a female candidate for a job at the Producers Guild of America, where McCreary is co-president. Four people who worked in production capacities on movie sets with Freeman over the last ten years described him as repeatedly behaving in ways that made women feel uncomfortable at work. Two, including the production assistant on “Going in Style” whose skirt he allegedly attempted to lift, said Freeman subjected them to unwanted touching. Three said he made public comments about women’s clothing or bodies. But each of them said they didn’t report Freeman’s behavior, with most saying it was because they feared for their jobs. Instead, some of the women — both on movie sets and at Revelations — said, they came up with ways to combat the alleged harassment on their own, such as by changing the way they dressed when they knew he would be around.

CNN reached out to dozens more people who worked for or with Freeman. Some praised Freeman, saying they never witnessed any questionable behavior or that he was a consummate professional on set and in the office.

At long last, the NBA Western Conference Finals are finally upon us. This series is between the Houston Rockets and the Golden State Warriors. The Rockets entered the season with hopes of dethroning the Warriors as Western Conference champions. So far, the Rockets have held their own against the defending champions and are two home victories away from a berth in the NBA Finals. With the series tied at two games apiece, both teams are in must-win territory and will look to take commanding 3-2 series lead.

Houston’s success is due to its elite duo which consists of James Harden and Chris Paul. This season, Harden has looked like a lock to win the MVP award. Harden averaged 30.4 points and 8.8 assists per game as he carried the Rockets to the best record in the NBA this season. However, unlike previous years, Harden finally has a fellow superstar on his team who might be able to lighten the load for Harden throughout the rest of this series. Assisting Harden is future Hall of Fame point guard Chris Paul. In his first season with the Rockets, Paul was phenomenal and averaged 18.6 points along 7.9 assists and 5.4 rebounds per game.

In game four, Harden and Paul basically carried the Rockets to a 95-92 victory in Golden State. Harden was somewhat inefficient as he shot 11-26 from the floor but still scored 30 points. However, Paul took over the game. In 42 minutes, Paul scored 27 points on 10-20 shooting and even hit five three pointers. However, none of the other five Rockets players who played scored more than 14 points. Although Harden and Paul are a great duo, others will need to pick up some of the slack in game five.

Golden State’s success has been due to its star point guard Stephen Curry and its star forward Kevin Durant. Both players are former MVP award winners and have proven that they are still elite in today’s NBA. This season, Curry averaged 26.4 points per game along with 6.1 assists per game. Curry’s statistics are even more impressive once one factor in his efficiency from the floor. Curry was shooting an absurd 49.5% from the field and 42.3% from the three-point line. However, Curry has struggled a bit in this series with his consistency and is only shooting 34.2% from three point range against Houston. Look for Curry to be more attack the rim more tonight if his three point shooting continues to struggle.

Leading the Warriors now is fellow superstar Kevin Durant. This season, Durant averaged 26.4 points per game along with 6.8 rebounds per game. Similarly to Curry, Durant was also extremely efficient from the floor. He was shooting 51.6% from the field and 41.9% from behind the arc. Unlike Curry, Durant has been unguardable this series and will likely look to keep it going in game five. In this series, Durant has averaged 31.8 points per game while shooting 48.9% from the floor. Expect Durant to put up points in bunches tonight in a must-win game for the Warriors.

As for my prediction, I have to side with the Warriors. The Warriors are clearly the better team and should be able to overpower the Rockets regardless of who the home team is. The Warriors have already beaten the Rockets in Houston this series and will now have Andre Iguodala back in the starting lineup after he missed game four. Expect this game to be competitive throughout but I think Golden State does just enough to squeeze out a victory.

Anastasia Yankova is one of the rising stars in Bellator MMA’s flyweight division. The 27-year-old, who was born in Moscow, Russia, knows what it takes to become a world champion, but she is still young in her mixed martial arts career. After training in Kyokushin Karate from ages 6 to 14, thanks to her love of “Xena: Warrior Princess,” Yankova eventually turned to Muay Thai. She was invited to Muay Thai class by a coach at her fitness gym and it didn’t take long to begin competing.

The Russian returns to action Friday, May 25 at Bellator 200 against Kate Jackson. The bout is set to open the main card which airs on the Paramount Network. The event was initially set to be headlined by a heavyweight scrap between Roy Nelson and Mirko Cro Cop, but an injury forced Cro Cop out of the fight and Nelson was pulled after Bellator failed to secure a last-minute opponent.

The new main event for Bellator MMA is now a middleweight championship fight between Rafael Carvalho and Gegard Mousasi. In the co-main event, the always exciting Michael Page takes on David Rickels.

Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach, Florida on lockdown after report of an armed person on campus. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office is telling reporter and parents on campus that no shots have been fired. The suspect is now reportedly in custody. The lockdown in Pompano Beach comes just six days after the deadly shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas that left 10 people dead and 13 people injured.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the school just before 1:30 p.m., Thursday. SWAT team was also spotted on the campus. No other information was made immediately available.

The lockdown at Blanche Ely High School is just the latest in a string of lockdowns, bomb threats, and shootings that have plagued the United States. Lockdowns have become all too common as a means of protection when students and faculty are in danger and today is no different.

This incident follows similar incidents at Dodd Middle School in Connecticut, Windham Public Schools also in Connecticut, Pacoima Middle School in Los Angeles, Millennium Middle School in Florida, and US Grant High School in Oklahoma, which are just some of the places where events such as this have occurred.

Lauren Mayberry is a Scottish singer, songwriter, writer, journalist, and social activist. She is best known as the frontwoman of the Scottish synth-pop group CHVRCHES. She also plays drums and keyboard.

Mayberry was born on October 7th, 1987, in Glasgow, Scotland. She’s been involved with music from a very young age, having played the piano since she was a child and learning the drums when she was a teenager. She went on to complete a four-year degree in journalism at the University of Strathclyde. After graduating, she began working as a freelance journalist and production runner.

Before joining CHVRCHES, Mayberry was in two different local bands, Boyfriend/Girlfriend, and Blue Sky Archives. While with Blue Sky Archives, Mayberry covered Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing In The Name” which was released as a single.

Mayberry collaborated on a few tracks with future CHVRCHES bandmate Iain Cook while a part of Blue Sky Archives. Cook told her about a project he was working on with friend Martin Doherty and asked Mayberry to sing on some of the songs. This project would turn into CHVRCHES and the rest is history.

CHVRCHES has released three albums since their formation, The Bones Of What Your Believe, Every Open Eye, and Love Is Dead. Mayberry eventually moved from Scotland to the United States and currently resides in Brooklyn. As of 2016, she had begun dating actor Justin Long.

In addition to being an accomplished musician, Mayberry is also a social advocate and ardent feminist. She formed TCI, a feminist collective in Glasgow and is still very vocal in her defensive of feminist beliefs.

This week we feature Penn State’s favorite watering hole, Primanti Brothers, an establishment at the State College-based school since 1933. Open early on game days and late on every other night of the week, Primanti Brothers (or simply “PMan’s” to Penn State students) is the university’s premier bar. The drink specials are the best deals on campus, bar none (see what I did there?): Happy Hour is every night of the week from 10 to 12 p.m., serving $2 mind erasers and $4 double drinks.

But while “PMan’s” may be State College’s favorite bar, that’s not what the establishment is mainly known for, as Primanti Brothers is actually is a Pennsylvania-wide chain that is known for slinging sandwichs more than anything else.

Today the NBA released it’s three All-NBA teams for the 2018 season. The selections were highlighted by two unanimous choices in Lebron James and James Harden on the first team. Joining James and Harden on that first team are Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard, and Kevin Durant. It is a record 12th first-team selection for Lebron who has made an all-NBA team 14 times. It is also Hardens 4th, Davis’s 3rd, Durant’s 6th and Lillard’s 1st appearance on the first-team.

The two unanimous choices could very well be 1 and 2 in MVP voting. Harden is widely expected to win that award, after leading the Rockets to a franchise record 65 wins and averaging 30.4 points, 8.8 assists and 5.4 rebounds all while co-running the offense with Chris Paul. LeBron also had a typically impressive season, averaging 27.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 9.1 assists on a 51 win Cleveland Cavalier team.

The second team consists of Giannis Antetokoumpo, Russell Westbrook, Joel Embiid, LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan, all players who made the playoffs but have since been eliminated. Some may be surprised that Giannis missed out on the first team after averaging 27 points, 10 rebounds, and 4.8 assists. Lack of wins probably held him back.

The third team boasts Stephen Curry, Victor Oladipo, Karl-Anthony Towns, Jimmy Butler and Paul George. Both Towns and George have been featured in varying off-season rumors, and it is possible that the two third-teamers will be playing for new teams come Fall 2018.

The list of those who received votes but didn’t receive enough to qualify for one of the teams speaks to the immense quality of the league right now. Players like Chris Paul, Rudy Gobert, Kyrie Irving, Ben Simmons, Al Horford, Donovan Mitchell and Nikola Jokic all received votes. In many past seasons, those guys would all have had seasons good enough to make at least the third team, possibly even the second team.

Gina Mazany is a 29-year-old competitor in the women’s bantamweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship with hopes of climbing up the promotion’s 135-pound division. Through two UFC bouts, Mazany has split her record at 1-1. Her first bout was unsuccessful go at former title contender Sara McMann, before bouncing back late in 2017 to score a win over Yanan We.

For Mazany, the opportunity to join the UFC has allowed her to take her training full-time for one of the most successful training camps of her career.

“ I have been working since I was 16 and this is the first time I have ever been able to train full-time.  I worked at a gym, sold snow machines in Alaska, when I was in Seattle I bartended on my way through college, and got a badass job at a gaming company, designing for them.  A year and a half ago I decided cagefighting was a smarter idea (I’m being sarcastic) and I packed up my Ford Focus with my dog and cat and moved to Vegas,” she said in her official UFC profile.

“Before I got this call, I was bartending at a local pub in Vegas.”

Now that she is able to work a full-time training camp, Mazany is excited to see what’s next.

“”[I] get up in the morning, go for a few mile run, head to the gym, drill whatever we are working on, go live for a bit and then drill again,” she noted. “When I’m not in season, I love to add lifting to my day.”

Mazany, whose brother fights for EFC in South Africa, is a seven-year blue belt. She began training at 18 years old and also has experience as an amateur boxer.

Next up for Mazany is a bout against Lina Lansberg at UFC Fight Night 130 bright and early Saturday, May 26. The event will be headlined by a welterweight fight between Stephen Thompson and Darren Till.

Larissa Pereira Firmino is the stunning wife of Liverpool FC and Brazil National Team forward Roberto Firmino. Larissa Pereira, a 25-year-old Brazilian Instagram model and influencer, has almost 200,000 followers on Instagram. Larissa and Roberto have been dating since 2014 and have two daughters together, Valentina and Bella. The couple got married in June 2017.

Roberto, the 26-year-old Brazilian national, began his career with Figueirense in 2009 before spending four-and-a-half seasons at Hoffenheim in Germany. In July 2015, he signed for Premier League club Liverpool, where he has since blossomed into one of the best forwards in the world. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp considers Firmino to be “Liverpool’s most important player”.

As for his international football career,  Firmino made his international debut for Brazil in November 2014 and represented the nation at the 2015 Copa América. He will play for the Brazilian National Team at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The Houston Rockets went all out to honor the victims and survivors from the horrific Santa Fe High School shooting earlier this month. Ahead of Thursday night’s Game 5 clash with the Golden State Warriors at the Toyota Center, the team held an on-court ceremony to honor those in attendance. The franchise also wore patches on their jerseys that read “Santa Fe HS,” while the senior class and administrators were invited to the game as guests of owner Tilman Fertitta. The Rockets also honored first responders, while having the Santa Fe High School choir perform the national anthem.

Following a video tribute and moment of silence, the Rockets were also joined on court by rapper Travis Scott, a Houston native.

“Just to break the monotony of what they are going through, to have them at the game, the seniors,” Fertitta said, via ABC 13’s Foti Kallergis. “You hate for their last moment in that high school to be what it was. So, just a little something we can do, which is basically nothing, but anything we can do, we want to do.”

The Rockets are also holding a charity raffle on Thursday night with all proceeds going to the Santa Fe Strong Memorial Fund. Santa Fe High School, which had eight students and two teachers gunned down last week, is located 30 miles from downtown Houston.

Pusha-T is set to drop a highly-anticipated album produced by Kanye West titled “DAYTONA” (via G.O.O.D. Music and Def Jam). The album drops May 25, 2018. The cover art was revealed on Thursday featuring a photo secretly taken of Whitney Houston’s bathroom in 2006, providing just a small yet powerful glimpse into the pop star’s addiction to drugs. The photo was originally featured in a 2006 edition of National Enquirer, detailing Houston’s “drug den.” During an interview with Angie Martinez on Power 105.1, Pusha-T revealed the album cover was Kanye West’s idea and that Kanye paid $85,000 out of his own pocket to license the photo.

The album is set to feature Rick Ross on the track “Hard Piano,” while Kanye will appear on the track titled “What Would Meek Do?”

On the closing song of the album, “Infrared,” lyrics have surfaced that appear to be a shot at Drake and rumors of his “ghostwriter” Quentin Miller.

“DAYTONA” is set to have 7 tracks. Pusha-T will be looking to kickoff Kanye’s new string of music with some hype.

Pusha-T spoke with Entertainment Weekly on Thursday, informing them that the album’s cover art “definitely does match the energy of my album.”

“I feel like the cover represents an organized chaos,” said Pusha-T. “The energy of the album is a bit chaotic, but it’s all in place. Looks at that cover, I’m sure whoever frequents that bathroom or area knew whatever they wanted to find and knew where it was.”

He might be the star of some of the most famous and successful film franchises of the last twenty years, but only recently has he done so without wearing a motion capture suit. Ever since his industry-changing turn as the corrupted Gollum in the acclaimed Lord of the Rings series, Andy Serkis has become known as the progenitor of a new cinematic medium. While other artists would have rejected being so cornered, Serkis has instead embraced this role and chose to instead legitimize mo-cap acting, opening up a whole new world of possibilities for future artists and actors. Seeing as he more or less changed modern blockbuster filmmaking, Serkis more than deserves a sizable net worth.

Andy Serkis’s Net Worth As Of 2018: $28 Million

While he’s been in numerous films, TV shows and voice-over projects since first debuting onscreen in 1989, the majority of Serkis’s wealth comes from the unique niche he’s carved out for himself as the godfather of motion capture performances. Ironically, this, in turn, has given him the opportunity to do more non-mo-cap work which cyclically helps lend more legitimacy to his innovative work in CGI animation. Outside of acting in skin-tight nylon, he’s also made money as a director, producer and film consultant. Most sources, including The Richest, Celebrity Net Worth, Know Net Worth and Richest Post, agree that his current net worth in 2018 is to the tune of $28 million.

Early Life

Serkis was born in Middlesex, England on April 20, 1964 to a teacher mother and a gynecologist father. Though he was raised primarily in Great Britain, his family took frequent excursions to his father’s homeland of Iraq. He originally attended Lancaster University to study visual art but took theater as a supplementary course because he wanted to design sets and posters. Even before he was an actor, he liked to perform as a student radio host for a local station. He was eventually asked to be an extra in a few performances which quickly snowballed into him having spoken, minor and soon major roles in the student plays. Having fallen in love with the craft, Serkis switched his studies entirely to acting.

1989-2003

For years following his graduation, Serkis became a regular face on the British theater circuit, joining a number of touring companies. He was best well known at this time for his Shakespearean work, specifically his roles in The Winter’s Tale and King Leer. Finally, in 1989, he took his first tentative steps into television acting. After a smattering of smaller roles, he took a recurring part on the series Streetwise, which he stuck with all the way through the show’s ending in 1992. Two years later, Serkis broke into the film scene with a small role in Royal Deceit, a star-studded reimagining of Hamlet. 

His career began to pick up steam towards the end of the decade. While he mostly took small movie roles in this period, he was working with elite British actors and steadily making a name for himself in the industry. He got what could be considered his ‘big break’ in 1999 when he shocked audiences with his haunting portrayal of Bill Sikes in the TV movie of Oliver Twist. It wasn’t long after that when he was tapped to play the role that would recontextualize his career and redefine the limits of cinema.

2003-2012

Serkis’s iconic portrayal of Gollum turned Hollywood on its head and made him a household name overnight. He was so sympathetic in the role that it was considered legitimately controversial that he wasn’t nominated for an academy award. After Lord of the Rings ended, director Peter Jackson called Serkis back to play the title role in his 2005 remake of King Kong. Serkis also got to play a live-action character, letting mainstream audiences see non-CGI face for the first time. The Serkis-Jackson partnership didn’t end there as the two teamed up with Steven Speilberg for 2011’s The Adventures of Tintin.

That same year, Serkis became a co-founder of Imaginarium Studios, a production company that specializes in motion-capture filming and consulting. Serkis then returned to the role that made him famous for Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, something he was reportedly happy to do, and doubled as a unit director, which sparked in him an interest in directing. Throughout this period, he had many smaller projects that allowed him to do live-action work, such as the Ian Dury biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, the failed franchise-starter Inkheart, and his lauded comedy with Simon Pegg Burke and Hare.

2012-Present

In 2011, Serkis landed a role that would once again reinvent his career. As the charismatic ape Ceasar in the Rise of the Planet of the Apes series, Serkis once again proved that performance capture was not merely a CGI gimmick and was a real, collaborative method of bringing a character to life. At this point, he was also known as a franchise player whose technical and artistic input could elevate a good movie to a great one. So much so that J.J. Abrams felt comfortable giving Serkis the part of Supreme Leader Snoke, the enigmatic and animated dark overlord of the new Star Wars trilogy he had been tasked with jump starting.

Around the same time, Serkis played the classic comic villain Ulysses Klaue in Avengers: Age of Ultron, a role he followed up on in the cultural phenomenon Black Panther. It was the first time he’d been given the opportunity to act without performance capture in a major franchise. Most recently, Serkis directed and stared in Mowgli, the non-Disney live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book, due for release in October 2018. He also is reportedly signed on to do two more of the well-received Spielberg-Jackson Tintin films.

Bellator MMA returns to television this weekend with Bellator 200: Carvalho vs. Mousasi as the promotion makes its way back overseas to London. In the main event, middleweight champion Rafael Carvalho vs. UFC veteran Gegard Mousasi. The main event was initially set to be a heavyweight bout between Mirko Cro Cop and Roy “Big Country” Nelson which would have crowned the alternate for the Heavyweight Grand Prix. Unfortunately, Cro Cop suffered an injury and was forced to withdraw from the event. Because Cro Cop’s withdraw was on such short notice, Nelson was pulled after Bellator was unable to find a replacement.

In the co-main event, the always exciting Michael Page faces off against David Rickels. UFC veteran Phil Davis also appears on the main card against Linton Vassell, while a women’s flyweight bout between Kate Jackson and undefeated prospect Anastasia Yankova opens up the night on Paramount Network.

Craven County Sheriff’s Office

The Chick-fil-A in New Bern, North Carolina has a table set up in honor of fallen North Carolina State Trooper Samuel Newton Bullard.

According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Dakota Kape Whitt, 22, was arrested without incident around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, in connection with the fatal crash of the North Carolina state trooper.

Reports indicate that Bullard and another trooper were conducting a driver license checkpoint just before 11 p.m. when a black BMW failed to stop and fled from the checkpoint. Troopers pursued the vehicle until reaching I-77 south into Yadkin County.

When one trooper lost sight of Bullard’s vehicle, he attempted to reach him by in-car communications, however, Bullard’s patrol vehicle was later found crashed at mile marker 80. Bullard, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our SHP family is devastated by the loss of Trooper Bullard. We are struggling to find words that describe the hurting we feel right now,” said Col. Glenn M. McNeill Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol. “Trooper Bullard died as he was fulfilling his promise to the people of North Carolina, protecting and serving his community.”

Craven County Sheriff’s Office

Whitt, who was wanted for murder, felony fleeing to elude arrest in a motor vehicle and driving with a revoked license, is being held without bond.

Bullard was a three year veteran of the force. A funeral will be held for Trooper Bullard on Friday, May 25, at 1:00 p.m. at the John A. Walker Center on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro.
