With the likes of Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift out there, being a beautiful pop star just doesn’t cut it anymore — you have to be beautiful AND actually supremely talented if you want to make your mark.

Well people, its now time to officially include the gorgeous Camila Cabello, the Cuban former Fifth Harmony member, in that list of the world’s hottest pop stars.

Instagram Photo

Cabello, born March 3, 1997, is a Cuban-American singer and songwriter who was part of the girl group Fifth Harmony.

Cabello departed from the group in December 2016. Since becoming a lead artist, Cabello has released two singles which entered the top 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100: “I Know What You Did Last Summer” with Shawn Mendes and “Bad Things” with Machine Gun Kelly, with the latter reaching No. 4.

Her single “Havana”, featuring Young Thug, from her upcoming debut studio album, has reached the top 10 across the world. At only 20-years-old, Cabello is going to be a force in the music industry for some time to come.

Now, am I going to start listening to her music anytime soon? Definitely, 100% not. But am I going to immediately start following her on Instagram? You bet your ass.

Absolute Legend Steals $1 Million Worth Of Mexican Food From The Government

Look, the true, true heroes–the troops, police, firefighters, and all the first–responders of the world (and Batman) — this much we know.

But as a wise man (Meek Mill, I believe) once said, there are levels to this shit, and the same is true with heroism. At the tippy top tier are the aforementioned groups — the troops, cops, etc — but right under them, right under the heroes we need, are the heroes we deserve.

This dude, who stole over a million dollars worth of Mexican food from the government, is a hero we deserve.

Gilberto Escamilla, an employee with the Juvenile Justice Department, has been charged with a first-degree theft after he was discovered to have stolen over $1 million worth of fajitas. Escamilla, who is the subject of an ongoing investigation, is accused of stealing the fajitas over the course of nine years.

According to prosecutors, on August 7, Escamilla took a day off for a medical appointment. While Escamilla was away, a driver from the Juvenile Justice Department’s meat vendor called to confirm an order of 800 pounds of fajitas.

When the JJD employee told the meat vendor, Labatt Food Service, that the order was a mistake because the facility does not serve fajitas, the Labatt Food Service employee said that his company has been filling the fajita order to the facility for close to 10 years. The investigation indicates that Escamilla would sell the fajitas to customers he had previously lined up on the day Labatt would deliver them.

via Brownsville Herald:

On Aug. 7, Gilberto Escamilla took a day off to go to a medical appointment. A driver from Labatt Food Service in Harlingen — the Juvenile Justice Department’s meat vendor — called the kitchen to inform it of an 800-pound delivery of fajitas. The woman who answered the phone said the driver was mistaken, and that the kitchen did not serve fajitas. That was when the driver told her he had been delivering fajitas to the Juvenile Justice Department for the past nine years, Saenz said.

“The receiver of the call rushes off to the supervisor and conveys to her the discussion that had been had, and that breaks the case,” Saenz said. “When Mr. Escamilla reports to work the next day, he is confronted with the discussion and he admits he had been stealing fajitas for nine years.”
He was fired Aug. 8 and arrested Aug. 9 after the DA’s Office Special Investigations Unit obtained a search warrant. When officers searched Escaramilla’s house, they found packets of fajitas in his refrigerator.

At the time, the value of the order had been between $2,500 and $30,000, a state jail felony. Escamilla was booked into jail and made bond. But the DA’s Office kept digging. After gathering documents from Labatt Food Service and the County Auditor’s Office, which included invoices, vouchers and purchase orders, the investigations unit concluded that Escaramilla had stolen $1,251,578 worth of fajitas.

“He would literally, on the day he ordered them, deliver them to customers he had already lined up,” Saenz said. “We’ve been able to uncover two of his purchasers, and they are cooperating with the investigation.”

Chief Juvenile Probation Officer Rose Gomez of the Cameron County Juvenile Justice Department released a statement saying that Escamilla’s alleged actions have led to a review of department policy:

“The Juvenile Justice Department is working closely with the Auditor’s Office to institute procedures, controls and safeguards to avoid a recurrence of this type of situation. The Department expects that wrongdoers will be punished and assures that procedures and protocols have been established,” Gomez said. “The Department will continue to strive to provide necessary and appropriate care, custody and protection of those juveniles in its custody as well as protection of public moneys.”

Escamilla was immediately fired from his position and placed under arrest, being charged with first-degree felony theft.

After looking through through Labatt’s inventory records and conducting an audit, investigators found that Escamilla had stolen $1,251,578 worth of food.

Allie is a bubbly blonde, who is innocent and high-pitched on the mic, but can kick some serious ass in the ring. She’s a former TNA Knocksouts Champion, and will be competing for the Impact Knockouts Championship this Sunday at GFW Bound for Glory. The 30-year-old performer will battle Hall of Fame athlete Gail Kim and Impact Knockouts Champion Sienna in a triple threat match. Can Allie pull off the win? You’ll have to wait until Sunday to find out.

She was born Laura Dennis on September 3, 1987, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Ms. Dennis made her professional wrestling debut in May 2005 under the name “Cherry Bomb.” She went on to win several championships in the independent wrestling scene, such as the PMX Women’s Championship, CCW Women’s Championship, Shimmer Tag Team Championship, and much more.

After appearing with TNA briefly for one-off appearance in 2013 and 2015, Ms. Dennis finally made her iMPACT! Wrestling debut on March 23, 2016. She played the role of “Allie,” the personal apprentice of Maria Kanellis.

On the special “Turning Point” edition of iMPACT Wrestling on August 25, 2016, Allie captured her first and only championship with the company. She won the TNA Knockouts Championship after defeating Sienna, Madison Rayne, Marti Bella, and Jade, in a five-way match.

Allie would forfeit her championship a week later to Maria, as she laid down in the ring and let her boss cover her for the win. Poor, Allie. She eventually left Maria in 2017, and has since went onto form an on-screen relationship with wrestler Braxton Sutter.

This Sunday, Allie will once again be gunning for championship gold. You can catch all of that on pay-per-view. But before the big triple threat match this Sunday, you can find Allie on a new episode of GFW iMPACT! Wrestling tonight at 8:00 P.M. (EST).

‘Time’ Most Influential Teens 2017: Our Top Choices From The List

Source: Shutterstock.com

Time has announced their list of today’s 30 most influential teens, including actors, celebrities, Olympic athletes, musicians and even political activists. Somewhat literal in their line-up, the list went from ages 13 to 19. We’ve compiled our list of our top choices among these teens. And they say that millennials these days don’t do much!

Take a look at some of our top picks!

Millie Bobby Brown

At the age of 13, Brown is one of the younger people on the list, but the point of the list is to honor those who’ve made their mark on the world in their short amount of time on this earth. Dedicated to her craft, it’s probably safe to say that most girls her age would not be happy getting buzzcut, even if it meant an acting role (especially for an acting role, since that’s what people will mark you as for the rest of your life.) Regardless, Stranger Things just wouldn’t be the same without Eleven.

Mikalia Ulmer

Normally, most people would be happy to live in a world without bees. Of course, they should just be happy for people and bees to live separately, since without pollination, our ecosystem is in trouble. When 13-year-old Ulmer learned about this, she decided to take action even after being stung twice by the little buggers! Using a family recipe, she started selling lemonade, specifically flavored with honey, to raise funds for honeybee advocate groups. By 2014, she already developed her own business: Me & the Bees Lemonade. She’s even finishing up her first children’s book, meant to inspire children how to start up their own businesses.

Shibby de Guzman

When I said political activists, I meant political activists. de Guzman, among other Catholic schoolchildren, had joined protests against Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte. de Guzman has also called for other children in the Philippines to speak out against the government, notably after a photo of her was captured at a protest. Even after critics likened the use of her image to child abuse and exploitation, she spoke out, saying, “We completely know and understand the injustice we are protesting against.”

Auli’i Cravalho

Cravalho, at a young age, joined the ranks of Disney’s classic line of heroines, playing the titular heroine of Moana. Of mixed Puerto Rican and Polynesian ancestry, she is hoping to help promote awareness of her cultures throughout American media. “Accurate representation matters,” as she explained in a statement, “I’m proud to be involved in projects that reflect the modern melting pot that is America.” She is also set to appear in the upcoming NBC drama, Rise.

Han Hyun Min

Growing up half-Nigerian and half-Korean in South Korea, this model-to-be face a lot of discrimination growing up. As he once described, as a child, his classmates’ mothers would often forbid them from playing with him out of fears that their skin would become as dark as his. However, after he was discovered by a photo posted on Instagram, he soon became one of the country’s top sought-after models. While he reportedly still faces discrimination, being denied roles over the color of his skin, he hopes his role as a model can teach South Koreans to become more inclusive in their beauty standards.

Ethan and Grayson Dolan

After all, they say that two heads are better than one, so why not have a pair of twins on the list. These two twins started out taking on dares and tongue challenges on camera, with their stunts helping them become viral stars. A YouTube clip of Ethan getting a tongue piercing in their home state of New Jersey garnered two million views and counting. They’ve even had a nationwide variety show that sold out in several cities.

Chloe Kim

The list didn’t forget to mention athletes, especially record-breaking ones! When Kim first tried snowboarding as a little girl, she wasn’t much interested, but she eventually grew up to become the first woman to ever land three full revolutions in the air during  competition! Right now, she is a favorite to win gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

Shawn Mendes

This Canadian popstar has broke out with hit after hit, known for his albums, Handwritten and Illuminate. Similar to a certain other famous Canadian, he first rose to fame on social media, notably through the now-defunct Vine. Still, he had proven his worth, with around 26 million followers on Instagram alone!

Yara Shahidi

The daughter of an Iranian father and an African-American mother, Shahidi stars in the ABC sitcom, Black-ish as the family’s eldest daughter. Proving popular, she is also set to star in a spin-off show centering around her character going off to college.

Sydney McLaughlin

New Jersey girls certainly show that they mean business! McLaughlin is the first repeat winner of the Gatorade National High School Athlete of the Year Award through her powerful running. She will even race for the University of Kentucky as an upcoming freshman!

Isaac Hempstead Wright

Game of Thrones, whether you prefer the show or the original books, has proven its staying power. That said, bringing Bran Stark to life for eight years, currently remaining one of the show’s few remaining players, Wright can make headlines with just a few words about what might happen on the show!

Elle Fanning

Whether she’s an incarnation of Mary Shelley or Sleeping Beauty, this Fanning sister has also become a figure in today’s fashion world, recently getting to be on the cover of Vouge and leading a second Miu Miu campaign.

Muzoon Almellehan

After learning firsthand the life of a child in a refugee camp after fleeing Syria to Jordan in 2013, Almellehan used her experience to become UNICEF’s youngest ever goodwill ambassador, traveling throughout the world to teach the importance of education to children throughout the world.

Steve Lacy

At the young age of 19, Lacy has already proven himself to be a musical powerhouse. Turning his iPhone into a portable studio, he even co-produced his own band, eventually winning a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album with the 2015 release, Ego Death. Now he’s producing tracks for artists like Big Sean and Kendrick Lamar!

Christian Pulisic

We didn’t forget athletes on the list and with soccer taking over the world in the past few decades, we have one star on the list! Pulisic plays for both the U.S. national team and in Germany’s top pro league, having broken multiple records. Despite being a prodigy, he spoke out on the importance of kids playing the sport just being kids. As he said in a statement, “I think that makes it worse because they don’t realize their kid isn’t enjoying it at all. Let kids be kids.”

Bretman Rock

This Hawaii-based Filipino beauty vlogger used his makeup brushes like a magic wand to rise up to Internet stardom, with nearly 9 million Instagram followers. With a national tour under his belt, he even got to host the Miss Universe red-carpet preshow this year! As he said, “I think the universe is taking quite good care of [me].”

Salvador Gómez Colón

With his San Juan neighborhood harmed by Hurricane Maria, Colón started a campaign to help those in need of solar lamps, hand-operated washing machines and other supplies for his neighbors in need: the Light and Hope for Puerto Rico. As he said in a statement, “One day should not go by that we don’t remind ourselves of how we can make other people’s lives better.”

Jaden & Willow Smith

Will Smith’s two children have appeared in music, television and all kinds of media together and individually. They were listed on the list individually, but who would want to split up a brother and sister? It helps to be the son and daughter of the Fresh Prince himself!

The former CEO and chairman of Ameritrade, Joe Ricketts, announced on Thursday that he will shut down two of his media companies: DNAinfo and Gothamist. Ricketts said that he launched that company in New York City in 2009, “at a time when few people were investing in media companies.”

He had just acquired the news and culture blog Gothamist in March, but shut down operations on Thursday after writers in his New York branch voted to unionize. The New York branch of DNAinfo had also voted to unionize.

Ricketts and a few partners created what would become TD Ameritrade in 1975. Back then, it was called First Omaha Securities. It has since grown into the one of the biggest online discount brokerages in the world. In 2011, he left that business behind, and decided to focus more on his philanthropic pursuits and entrepreneurism.

Let’s see just how much moolah Joe Ricketts has raked in over the years…

Joe Ricketts Net Worth as of 2017: $2.1 Billion

John Joseph “Joe” Ricketts has a total net worth of $2.1 billion dollars. That’s a whole lot of coin. He’s undoubtedly made a lot of cash during his over 76 years on this Earth. He’s the former CEO and chairman of the giantic brokerage firm Ameritrade, and the current majority owner of the Chicago Cubs (maintains a 95% controlling interest of the team and Wrigley Field). He also owns 20% of Comcast Sportsnet Chicago. In 2008, he launched his very own film company known as The American Film Company, which features true stories from America’s past.

Ricketts is also a known supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump. He donated at least one million dollars towards Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

The Top 5 Comics To Read Before You See ‘Black Panther’

Marvel

Are you excited about the upcoming Black Panther movie? Don’t forget that the character started as a comic book and that there are a lot more stories left to tell when the movie ends!

Black Panther is arguably the first African American superhero to appear in mainstream American comics. The character lives a double life as T’Challa, the king of a mysterious, African nation of Wakanda. Inspired by his people’s mythology, he also inherits the alter-ego of the “Black Panther,” donning a full-body suit, as other previous members of the royal family have done for hundreds of years. Combining rituals and proficient science, as well as his own training to become a skilled fighter, he, like many similar heroes, took on the mantle after the tragic assassination of his father, King T’Chaka.

He has also had different incarnations over the years and encountered other Marvel heroes. In fact, his debut came from a “diplomatic” meeting with a certain, other Marvel team, but more on that later…

We’ve compiled a list of some of the best Black Panther comic stories!

Top 5 Black Panther Comics

Black Panther’s First Appearance

A lot of comic book characters make their debut in other characters’ stories and this includes the Black Panther. He first appeared in a Fantastic Four two-parter: #52-#53. The character greets the titular four as they go on a diplomatic mission to Wakanda; the Black Panther follows them home to the United States and, after testing their ability, asks them for help with a grave mission.

If anything else, the irony that Michael B. Jordan is both in the Black Panther film and a certain Fantastic Four film has just gone full circle!

Black Panther’s First Starring Series

In the late 1970’s, Black Panther had his first spin-off series, after appearing as a recurring guest character in other Marvel comics. While it only lasted 15 issues, with some of the unpublished stories being printed in other anthology comics, it would prove to be the first of many, with a follow-up series coming out just around ten years later!

Black Panther: The Man Without Fear

Posing as an immigrant named Mr. Okonkwo, T’Challa became the protector of Hell’s kitchen and blended in with everyday people. This incarnation of the character also deals with serious issues like child abuse and vigilantism.

A Nation Under Our Feet

Written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, this arc takes a different spin on the character. Given that Black Panther’s alternate identity, T’Challa, is meant to be the actual king of Wakanda, he must contend against a superhuman terrorist group dubbed “The People.” The story also places focus on members of Dora Milaje, Wakanda’s all-female special forces.

Rise of the Black Panther

A Nation Under Our Feet was later given a prequel series that dealt with T’Challa’s family, notably his grandfather, who even gets to meet Captain America. At times, you can forget how old he is supposed to be! In addition, the series takes a look at some of T’Challa’s early years as king of Wakanda.

What happened?

On Wednesday, February 14, Cruz opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, reportedly injuring and killing 17 people, mostly students, although one shooting victim is currently believed to be a teacher.

At this time, Cruz is believed to be detained in police custody. Reportedly, he was arrested on 47th NW Drive.

Who Is Nikolas Cruz?

He is described as being 5″8″, with ginger, red hair and freckles. According to different reports, his surname is given as both “Cruise” or “Cruz.” Similarly, different accounts have given different spellings of Cruz’s first name: “Nicholas,” “Nikolas” and “Nicolas.” He is also believed to be 19 years of age.

At this time, it is believed that he is a former student of the school; some reports identified him as an “alternative” and “problematic” student. According to initial reports, he was seen covered by a gas mask, also wearing a black hat, pants and a dark brown shirt.

According to some reports, Cruz could be seen and heard “yelling, kicking and talking to himself” while in police custody. This had lead to speculation on social media that he had some form of mental illness.

This Trailer For A “Batman Ninja” Cartoon Just Made My Brain Explode

Warner Bros.

Japanese Anime is simply wild. That is one of the facts of life: death, taxes, Instagram models selling protein, and Japanese anime being flat-out bonkers. So when you apply that style of animation to a character as iconic as Batman, I can only imagine what the result will be. And if this trailer is any indication, that result is going to be the Dark Knight unlike we’ve ever seen him.

Japanese anime is known for being quite graphic so it will be interesting to see what rating this ends up receiving. Despite being a cartoon, that doesn’t mean the content isn’t mature: last year Warner Bros. released an animated version of the Batman graphic novel classic The Killing Jokes that received an R-rating.

As fans of the character know, the direct-to-DVD animation miss are the most consistent Batman motion picture interpretation going these days (looking at you, DCEU), so hopefully this eccentric, yet definitely interesting project will continue that consistent quality we’ve come to expect.

via Collider:

Veep and Arrested Development star Tony Hale voices The Joker in this feature alongside Roger Craig Smith (Batman: Arkham Origins) as Batman, Grey Griffin (Scooby-Doo) as Catwoman, Tara Strong (Batman: The Killing Joke) as Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, and Fred Tatasciore (Family Guy) as Gorilla Grodd and Deathstroke, rounding out the English dubbing of this Warner Bros. Japan original.

Directed by Jumpei Mizusaki (opening animation of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure) and written by Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann), the story finds Gorilla Grodd’s time displacement machine transporting Batman, a few of his allies, and many of his worst enemies to feudal Japan. The comics costumes get a Japanese makeover as the villains take over the forms of feudal lords ruling the divided land, led by The Joker himself. Batman, meanwhile, loses his high-tech weaponry in the time jump and is forced to rely on his intellect and pure brawn to bring these baddies down.

The feature-length animated film arrives on Digital starting April 24, 2018, and Blu-ray and DVD on May 8, 2018.

As for Gard, he said he believes the school administration earlier sent out an e-mail warning teachers that the student had made threats against others in the past and that he should not be allowed on the campus with a backpack.

On Wednesday, February 14, 17-year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, killing 17 people and injuring dozens more. Cruz legally purchased the AR-15 rifle he used in the shooting about a year ago.

Cruz was adopted by his mother, Lynda Cruz. More than three months ago, on November 1, Lynda Cruz died after battling the flu and pneumonia. According to CNN, Cruz’s father died over a decade ago due to a heart attack. Cruz’s cousin, Kathie Blaine, said she had last seen Lynda Cruz about 20 years ago and had never met Nikolas Cruz.

via CNN:

When asked who Cruz lived with since both of his adoptive parents had died, she said: “Nikolas was on his own. He is 19. He was an adult on his own. It’s really at this point, I don’t understand it any more than anyone else does. I can’t believe it. I can’t believe any of these school shootings. I never met him.”

Cruz had been living with a friend’s family since his mother died last year, Jim Lewis, a Ft. Lauderdale attorney who represents the family, told CNN affiliate WPEC.

Furthermore, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said Cruz’s digital profile contained what he called “very, very disturbing” content. He had a variety of gun and violence-related postings on social media sites.

Reportedly, Cruz could later be seen on a gurney while being transported to a local hospital, according to CBS News.

According to The Miami Herald, a teacher identified as Jim Gard, who said Cruz had been in his class last year, have the following statement:

“We were told last year that he wasn’t allowed on campus with a backpack on him…There were problems with him last year threatening students, and I guess he was asked to leave campus.”

Superintendent Robert Runcie also gave the following statement according to the same publication:

“We received no warnings…Potentially there could have been signs out there. But we didn’t have any warning or phone calls or threats that were made.”

Marjory Stoneman Football Program

Aaron Feis, a reportedly beloved assistant football coach and security guard at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, was among the 17 people killed Wednesday at the Parkland high school by 17-year-old gunman Nikolas Cruz.

According to reports, Feis threw himself in front of students as Cruz shot up the school on Wednesday. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was Feis’ alma mater.

Feis reportedly responded to the original call on the school’s security radio walkie-talkies when a staff member asked if the loud sounds heard were “firecrackers.” Feis then responded, “No, that is not firecrackers.”

Spokeswoman Denise Lehtio said of Feis: “He died the same way he lived — he put himself second,” Lehtio said. “He was a very kind soul, a very nice man. He died a hero.”

via The Sun-Sentinel:

According to Douglas football coach Willis May, Feis’ family was notified around midnight Wednesday or very early Thursday morning. In a news conference late Wednesday night, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel referenced a football coach dying, but did not give a name.

Social media accounts throughout the day called Feis a hero, saying he was shot while helping a student. May said he heard directly from a student that Feis jumped between her and the shooter, to push her out through a door and out of the line of fire.

May was in his football office at the time of the shooting and went into a lockdown mode with four football players and two coaches from Nichols College, who were recruiting at the school when Mays heard “Code Red” over the intercom. He added they later saw the shooter outside the office window, trying to blend in with students evacuating.

Cruz, described as a “troubled teen” (who was still able to legally purchase a gun), reportedly threatened and harassed peers, talked about killing animals, posed with guns in disturbing photos on social media, and bragged about target practice in his backyard with a pellet gun.

Marjory Stoneman football coach Willis May said Feis was a “Big ol’ teddy bear.”

“Hardcore – he coached hard. Real good line. He did a great job with the [offensive] line. He took pride with working with those guys. Loyalty – I trusted him. He had my back. He worked hard. Just a good man. Loved his family. Loved his brother – just an excellent family man,” Mays said.

May Coach Aaron Feis rest in peace.

Black History Month films

Black History Month has come again and one way to honor the time is take notice of black empowerment in the media. Over the years, various black icons have come to light, many in front of the camera, some behind the camera and others whose stories are what is being told. We’ve collected 10 different movies that have a message of black empowerment in some faculty that you can watch, all from different genres and time periods. You can enjoy with the whole family, with your friends or just by yourself.

Top 10 Black Empowerment Films

Within Our Gates

Oscar Micheaux was an African American writer and film producer who developed over 40 films. His second silent film was Within Our Gates, produced in 1920. Telling the story of a mixed-race school teacher who tries to raise money for a rural school in the Deep South. Although it is not Micheaux’s first film, it is believed to be the oldest known surviving film made by an African-American director.

Body and Soul

Okay, okay, black-and-white movies might not be your cup of tea, but this film was the debut of Paul Robeson, legendary performer and civil rights activist. The film tells the story of an escaped prisoner who disguises himself as a preacher and his more heroic twin brother who both fall in love with the same woman. A good chunk of the film turns out to have been a dream, but it at least allows for a happy ending.

To Sir With Love

Sidney Poitier starred in a variety of films that reflected racial conflicts and empowerment, all the while helping to prove that a black man could be the leading star. In To Sir With Love, he showed that issues could happen all around the world. More importantly, it shows what can be overcome. Based off of E. R. Braithwaite’s autobiographical novel, Poitier plays Mark Thackeray, a teacher dealing with social and racial issues in an inner-city school in London.

Lady Sings The Blues

Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown and one of the first black producers in Hollywood, told the real-life story of singer, Billie Holiday, as portrayed in the film by Diana Ross, one of Gordy’s biggest stars.

The Wiz

In the 1970’s, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz took on Manhattan with an all-black cast. No really, New York City turned into Oz for this film and it is breathtaking to watch. Based on a popular stage show, it is actually much more faithful to the original Baum book than a certain MGM musical. In other words, silver shoes are just classier than ruby slippers! Finally, this is a film for the whole family. Although I will admit to one thing, Stephanie Mills was robbed!

Soul Food

George Tillman Jr. based the story of Soul Food partially off of his own family and helped to craft a more positive image of an African American family in Hollywood. Teaching the importance of family, the Joseph family of Chicago comes together every Sunday night for a family dinner hosted by Josephine “Big Mama” Joseph, who grows to have an angelic presence over her family even after her passing.

The Josephine Baker Story

When Josephine Baker realized she wouldn’t be able to make it as a respected performer in the States due to the color of her skin, she did the only sensible thing a person in her position could do…she moved to Paris and became the star she deserved to be. Becoming an icon of the 1920’s, she later aided the French Resistance during the Second World War and fought for the Civil Rights Movement in her former country, even adopting children of various backgrounds into her family. Lynn Whitfield portrayed the icon in The Josephine Baker Story, which showed that even in France, Baker’s life was more complicated than a mere Cinderella story.

12 Years a Slave

Based off of the 1853 slave narrative memoir Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup, the film tells the story of an African American man who was born free, but had been kidnapped and sold into slavery. Northup was brought to life by British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Queen of Katwe

Telling the story of a Ugandan girl who changes her life by learning to play chess and taking on competitions, this Disney film was based on the real-life story of Phiona Mutesi. Emphasizing the importance of education, this is a film the whole family can enjoy.

Serena

Don’t forget that documentaries combine all the fun of a movie with a real-life story. Serena Williams has shown the world that she could be a triple threat: working hard as an athlete, designer and businesswoman. In fact, Williams herself also narrated this documentary of her life.
